I think that in order to artificially drive up the prices for these lenses they would have to cause a shortage of them to make them rare (hard to find) by hoarding many more lenses than only the 5-8 lenses that they are using in their tests.
Also unless somone can definitively dispute the data and technical results of these tests, then they would be way out of line to insinuate that the results were merely concoted to artificially drive up prices.
If I have a pile of whatever, and it occurs to me that it could be marketable as being better than the pile of other stuff being sold out there, and I can make a profit, then I'm going to make some money! That's free trade plain and simple.
However, trying to capitalize and derive excess profit based on a temporary shorgage of any particular item is plain old price gouging.

I found a Zuiko 21 3.5 in new condition. The person said he paid $419 for it--he is the original owner. I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning. I really want a great wide lense and from the test this looks to be the one. What would be a fair "outside of FM" price to pay?

Outside the hothouse environment of the FM Buy 'n Sell page it's reasonable to offer around 2/3 of new retail price for used lenses and be willing to negotiate up to maybe 75-80% of new depending on condition.

let's hope for bill's sake, the seller is not monitoring the fm boards!!!!
Thought you all might like to see a "relative size" shot of the Oly lenses. Other than the 16-35, these are the lenses I carry in my f64 backpack when in the field. The 21/3.5 Oly is outlined in red. That is a 58mm 500D in a case and an EF25 tube behind it, and a 16-35 to the right of it for comparison:

Thanks to the advise from Guy, I went looking and I found a mint Oly 21/2 in the pawnshop here in Sydney
For $750 AUD $567 US.
It made my day!
Also looking at the MTF curves the difference between the F2 and the F3.5 stopped down at F8 is almost zero.
I like the idea of F2 to focus with!
WR.
Again thank you Mike Jack and Guy for the advise and tips!
Guy,
regarding the CS 21 I've given up on that one.
I've searched the planet!
The good news is that the one Jeff Latia is selling has dropped 1K !
O yes, those Oly lenses are coming to get you!

Dave it has not been tested, the one Mike was tring to get to test was outbid by a large margin. According to some research between the 2 they actually leaned towards the 3.5 . Not surpirsing much easier to build a slower lens than a faster one
Well... I was actually one of the first mad people who gave the Zeiss 21 a try after have been so disappointed with all Canon wides.
Indeed the first "full frame" try was by Jan Brittenson with my lens, see this old post.
I bought my copy two years ago here in Italy for about 1,600 $ (used) and now this baby is selling for what 3,500 - 4,000 $ ?!?!? Are you serious
Not that I want to sell mine but it's the first time I made an investment with my gear
The Zuiko lens is impressive though and its reported low distortion makes it even more tempting. I don't like the "gullwing" distortion of the Zeiss 21. You always need PanoTools, PSCS2 doesn't seem to to correct it.
