take a look at the cz 28-85. It's one of the last designs for contax and perform fairly well. Just take a look at the MTF chart of that lens.

With the 35-70, macro mode ...

Flower & Bee

Not a great picture, but you get the idea of the lens. I love this zoom!

Many thanks for your advise.

Did not find it at B&H. Is it discontinued one?

Any more comments from other folks too?

Elías Seguí, you have a very good copy of the Zeiss 50mm F1.4. As I mentioned before there are lots of bad CZ 50mm F1.4 as with Canon EF 50mm F1.4. The reason for this is that these lens are kit lens in the film day (I cannot believe I just say it as if it was the previous generation history). Thus the quality control for these lens are not as tight.

If you get a very sharp 50mm F1.4 keep it. It is very sharp at wide open.

My test is on f 5,6 and f 8 and for me is Nº 1 Zeiss 50 1,4, I reed all people the zeiss 1,7 is the best and next days make another test and put any sample in web..... To day test Zeiss 28 2,8 - Canon 28 2,8 - 24/70 L USM at 28mm and my got THE VERY BEST is Zeiss 28 2,8 - Sharp - Contrast - Color - and the corners better too, tomorow I go to by the Zeiss 35 2,8 .....

Elias, yes the Zeiss 28mm F2.8 is simply an amazing lens that folks who have used it never have anything negative to say about it. Guy and myself often recommend folks this lens as the start out kit lens. Let us know your other tests.

Son,
It is not true that we never have anything negative to say about the CZ 28/2.8. I have posted comments about it regarding the need to stop down to f/8 or so to get really sharp corners and the very cool, bluish color rendition.

That kind of hyperbole is not helpful.

Mark, when it comes to the Zeiss Distagon 28mm F2.8 I have to admit I am in love with this lens perhaps more than some folks. However, the simple design of this lens and the cost of the lens is too sweet and I love the performance of the lens which is tack sharp. I am not aware of your post talking about the bluish cast of the lens. However, every lens has some weekness but we kind of overlook them due to the fact that as an overal the lens performance there is no other lens that can compete with them. Take an example of the Zeiss 21mm F2.8 there is distortion that makes the lens difficult to do architectural works. There is slight CA. There is also vignetting. We can pick out even more flaws to every lens. Furthermore, the Zeiss 21 not only has flaws but the price is also jump all the way over $4K. The question then is the Zeiss 21mm F2.8 also hyperbole? To me the answer is no because it is not an absolute answer but relativity to other lens is the answer. Thus there is no lens that can beat the Zeiss 21 despite the flaws in its design and yet folks over look at its flaw and accept the strength of the lens in comparison to the other lens. Thus, even with a few flaws that the Zeiss 28mm F2.8, the Trailler Park, the performance of this lens is simply amazing to me. In fact, if I have only 2 choices either the Leica 19 and the Zeiss 28mm F2.8 I choose the Trailler Park 28mm F2.8. No disrespect to the Leitz 19. Thus, for me and folks that use this lens as awhole I will over look some of the flaws that it may have. Furthermore, when it comes to testing lens it is subjective since most tests that have been static tests. For example, the Zeiss 28mm F2.8 test in close up and in mid distance focusing will have soft corners and this is due to the fact that it has no floating elements. This is where the Hollywood 28 and Zeiss 21mm are great they can retain sharpness to the edge even at close focusing distance. However, at infinity focus, the Zeiss 28mm F2.8 is a stellar lens and in fact I even like it a tad more thant he Hollywood 28. It is actually sharper especially in the center. Thus the question is at what focusing distance did you observed the softness in the corner?

If Son gets effusive about CZ, and about lenses in general, I forgive him. We benefit from his energy and enthusiasm. I fully agree with his more objective description, above. I greatly enjoy the D28/2.8 because of the (historically) low cost, small size, and wonderful optical qualities. After the P50, it's my most-used C/Y lens.

I have to admit I was never a big fan of the 28mm perspective until I started using this lens. Now it's one of my most used. I could've just got the CZ 28/2.8, 50/1.7 and 85/1.4 and I would've saved over the 24-70L! As long as I'm not doing sporty stuff, of course .

I have been thinking of doing the same thing dj. I still cannot get over the focus ring of the 28/2.8, it is smooth like silk allows for great touch focusing. I was thinking of selling a couple canon consumer lens and buying the above lenses (I have read the cz 85 isnt stellar) or buy a 35-70.

Mark and Rico, you guys can call me effusive and enthusiatic and all that but I have to admit I love these Zeiss too much especially the Trailler Park 28. Got I hate calling it the Trailler Park 28 but oh well it is stuck in me now

DJ, it is funny you mentioned the perspective of the 28mm. The 28mm is a very popular focal length lens. In fact I don't pull the 21mm out that much but the 28 is such an easy lens to use.

Bob, I have to say when it comes to the 85mm F1.4 Planar I am as harsh a crique as you see but I have to admit the lens is physically beautiful and stop down it is a very sharp lens.

Son, I actually like the softness of the wide-open 85mm 1.4 Planar on occasion, and stop down when I want sharp. Let's face it (pun intended), sometimes you don't want every zit, nose hair and pore reproduced in scorchingly icky detail. But maybe I'm just compensating psychologically ...

DJ, I don't disagree with you about the 85mm F1.4. In fact the lens was famous for that very reason as well.
