I have tested the Leica APO Telyt R 280mm F2.8. It is an oustanding lens extremely sharp. The Canon 200mm F1.8L with the 1.4 X extender is not even close to the Leitz 280mm F2.8.

Son, I actually like the softness of the wide-open 85mm 1.4 Planar on occasion, and stop down when I want sharp. Let's face it (pun intended), sometimes you don't want every zit, nose hair and pore reproduced in scorchingly icky detail. But maybe I'm just compensating psychologically ...
From the portrait distance with f/1.4, very limited surface area of the face is in focus anyway. The softness, if any, is hardly noticable.

Thanks Son and everybody.
Can you or any folks suggest me how much would be the reasonable price on used but Like New Leica APO 280/2.8 one, how do you compare it with 280/4 APO latest model? Does this lens take converter and can it be used with Canon DSLRs?
Both of the Leica 280mm F2.8 and the Leica 280mm F4 are tremendous lens. They both are very sharp lens and they both show micro-resolving power that pop out the 3D tests that I have done compared with the Canon 200mm F1.8L with a 1.4 extender where folks claimed to be as good/better/a tad worse than the Canon 300mm F2.8L IS. Thus, the Leica 280mm lens are really sharp. The F4 is really a small lens and the F2.8 is bigger but cheaper and older design. My suggestion if you are going to get the F2.8 you should remove the UV filter from it front element to allow high resolving power otherwise the UV will warranty to degrade the image quality. There is some little differences between the F4 and F2.8.
Price: ~ $4K for 280mm F4
Price: ~ $3K for 280mm F2.8 Older style

Many thanks in advance.
I got to try one recently on a 1ds. It was better than my 17-40mm. Sharper, mostly near f/4, CA was better controlled. It seemed to have more contrast. I hope to get it back for a longer evaluation.
One lens that doesn't get much mention, but that I really liked when I had a Lieca system is the 90mm f/2.8 elmarit. I used this lens for landscape, portraits, and with a extension tube, as a macro.
