Dear All,
I recently switched to Canon from Nikon. I want to buy one reasonably good wide angle lens and one Micro Lens from Leica to use them with adapter in my Canon EOS Digital body (Canon 20D and may be with 1d II in future).
1.I did a bit search. The only good option I found for Micro from Leica was 100/2.8, any other/better or cheaper option?
2.I think Leica 28-90 Latest lens would be great to have it but it is too much expensive. What do you think of Leica Vario-Elmar R 1:3.5-4.5/28-70mm? Is it better (in terms of sharpness, color saturation, distortion) than Canon 24-70 L or 28-70 L?
3. Also what do you think of Leitz Leica Elmarit-R 28mm 1:2.8?
Any other option may be?
Many thanks in advance.

Dhruba,
Recently, I compared the Leica Elmarit 28mm with Carl Zeiss 28mm f/2.0, CZ f/2.8 and Canon 24-70 (at 28mm) on a FF camera. In my book, the Leica in terms of resolution, contrast and absence of vignetting, is the best of the bunch. The performance difference was noted in the corners; in the center image, the difference is less apparent. BTW, the 28 Elmarit I tried is the current model.
Not a direct answer to your question No. 2 but I love my 24-70mmL and use it a lot because of the flexibility of a zoom. I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of this zoom lens in the comparison I mentioned above. Keep in mind that not every lens that bears a Leica or CZ name is better than Canon lens of similar design. Have you looked into Canon Macro lenses lately? Again, not a direct answer to your question No. 1...
If you buy a brand new one in the store, that's the current model - just kidding . I bought mine used. Mine has ROM contacts, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. The dead give away is the hood. In the current model, the hood cannot be taken off; it is a sliding lens hood but the front side is rectangular.
In macro lenses, the Leica 100mm Apo Macro Elmarit is superb. It is the best lens I have ever owned, any brand, and I use it with excellent results on my 20D.
A less expensive alternative is the 60mm Macro Elmarit. It is also excellent, but not in the same class as the 100mm, and the 60mm focal length is less convenient.
Regarding the zooms, the 28-70mm Vario Elmar is widely regarded as a dog among the Leica community. It is actually a rebadged Sigma or Minolta, and absolutely not worth the money. Here, I would definitely go with one of the Canon L lenses you mention.
Finally, regarding the 28mm--if it is says Leitz, then it is an old model (20+ years). To get an overview of current lenses, go to www.leica-camera.com.
I don't find folks much positive regarding using Leica lens on Caon. Besides, good lens like 100/2.8 Micro (affordable though for me) and 28-90 (around $3300 at B&H ) are expensive. Canon 180/3.5 L is already an outstanding lens as per the review.
So, I think I should stop my idea using Leica lens in my Canon body unless I will be millionar
But honestly, I wanted to buy Leica wide angle lens just because I have heard that none of Canon wide angle zoom lens are very good one. What do you think about it?
Based up on the info I got from here, if it is not written Leitz, it is newer version. But I saw a lens in the net in which Leitz was not written but the seller says it is one version before the latest one
I read very good reviews about the LEICA Objektiv Summilux-R 1,4/50mm latest version but what do you think of one version before the latest one? and can that be used with adapter in Canon Digital body?

Yes, any version of the 50 1.4 can be used on EOS cameras without problem.
The Summilux 50/1.4 is a great lens, but I do not see much reason to buy it, given the high price and the good 50/1.4 Canon lens. If I were to buy a Leica lens specifically for the Canon, I would go for the 15mm, or the 100mm Apo Macro (depending on your focal length needs).

Thanks Nathan. But you did not answer how good is the Summilux 50/1.4 NOT the latest but just the version before the latest one? Don't you think that one is better than Canon 50/1.4?Thanks again.

The 50mm Zeiss 1.7 is a better lens, how much better than the canon I think it is but have not done a side by side just going from memory
I test today on my 1Ds MKII - 50 1,4 canon 50 1,4 Zeiss 50 1.7 Zeiss, and for me the best for all distance 50 1,4 Zeiss best color best contrast best sharp.
I have the same opinion as Elias, although I found that from f/4 down the CZ 1.4 and Canon 1.4 were almost indistinguishable. It has come to my attention recently that there are variations among the CZ 50/1.4s. Apparently Elias and I have good copies.

Elías Seguí, you have a very good copy of the Zeiss 50mm F1.4. As I mentioned before there are lots of bad CZ 50mm F1.4 as with Canon EF 50mm F1.4. The reason for this is that these lens are kit lens in the film day (I cannot believe I just say it as if it was the previous generation history). Thus the quality control for these lens are not as tight.
If you get a very sharp 50mm F1.4 keep it. It is very sharp at wide open.
So bottom line, depending on how lucky you feel on that day, or if your planet is in the right house, go for the f1.4, otherwise go with the sure f1.7 ...
