Why back away from the stacked sensor tech? This is shaping up to be a Z50 III.

At least partially stacked sensor like Z6III which is not bad for BIF. Just hope NR is wrong this time. But based on the price (if true) it's going to be a copy of X-T5. I was hoping for X-H2S

Sensor is most likely the IMX671AQR.

Rumored Specs

  2. 8k 60p video
  3. Expeed 7 processor
  4. Refresh rate of 120 fps with AF/AE
  5. Same EVF as the Nikon Z6III: 5,760k dots
  6. Very fast camera similar to the D500 DSLR
  7. New digital teleconverter mode
  8. RED tech inside
  9. ProRes RAW support
  10. New REC button on top
  11. Price similar to the Nikon Z6III (around or under $2,000)
  12. Expected announcement in the next two weeks (was initially scheduled for August- September)

Once you start putting a stacked sensor into your camera you're immediately in the over $2500 category. I wish it had one too, but the XH2 isn't a bad camera.

Yup. The XH2S is $2900 Yeah I don't think the Nikon user base wants to pay that price.

That's a PDF for an 8MP 1/1.8' sensor used in security cameras.

So, the Z70 is just what you'd expect from the name - the APS-C version of the Z7. A high MP count, jack of all trades, Expeed 7 body, and not the mythical D500 replacement. Not a bad thing, just not what I think many folks here are looking for. Makes me wonder if we may see a Z9ii launch followed by a Z90 body, a la D3/D300.

I mean, it could be. The D500 wasn't a stacked sensor either and got a whopping 10fps, which even the Z6 II bests. So, if this Z70 gets to 15-20fps with the Expeed7, it for sure it'll be a D500 replacement.

But during mechanical shutter days, stacked or not didn't make much difference. So the difference between D5 and D500 was mainly the crop factor. That's what I hope for a D500 replacement in Mirrorless era. A Z8 with cropped sensor. With ES now even Z50II can do 20FPS with horrible rolling shutter though. So I'm not sure we can call Z70 a 'fast camera like D500' unless the sensor readout is really fast with much less rolling shutter.

Edit: My dream D500 replacement would be Z50ii body with 26mp stacked sensor (Both Sony and Fuji has one of these) and IBIS.
Love the Z50II form factor. It's tiny, light but still fit in your hand very well. Perfect travel/backup camera

If it doesn't have a stacked sensor then for sure it will still have a mechanical shutter too not only electronic shutter.

The Z6iii does 14fps in mechanical or efcs mode, so a Z70 should be similar.

That's plenty fast enough for me, I think some people just want a bigger number for bragging rights more than actual practical use.

No it's not, that's just nonsense.

Subject detection AF tracking is a far more useful reason.

I don't care about being blackout free as long as the blackout isnt too long.

I guess it depends on what you shoot. But my D4s and D850 can track what I shoot. Yes mirrorless is better but it needs to be blackout free and at least 20 fps to be a reason to switch.

Maybe we all get surprised and the readout speed is blazing fast. Who knows.

The D850 sure was not blackout free. The AF was considered good at the time, but nowhere near today.
If you already have a Z9/Z8 then the purpose of the Z70 is the extra reach. But you apparently opted for the D850 over the D500 so probably a harder sell for you.

I’ve shot the z8 quite a bit and while it’s a great camera the whole z system is far too expensive for a fella like me running a side business. The Z70 could be a cheaper entry point. And I’ve shot the D500 a ton. I only recently went full frame.

I just haven’t seen a compelling case yet in the tech to move up from dslrs. I’ve shot the A1 and I can definitely say no to Sony. Nikon just has great glass.

Like anything it takes time for used gear costs to come down. It took a long time until I could afford a 500mm pf. If I was shooting full time it would be different. And I used to shoot high end sports in the old days so I don’t need super fancy af to make pictures.

I think in today’s economy it’s all about value. And I’m waiting for the moment where the scales tip more in the favor of affordability with tech that makes sense.

But to be fair, DX is just a crop factor, not really extra reach. There's nothing stopping a Z9 shoot from going into DX crop mode and getting the same impact that a theoretical Z70 DX would bring. The real DX play is cost. The D500 gave high performance for its time in a less expensive DX body.

That said, as a dedicated DX DSLR shooter, I really wish Nikon would give DX some mirrorless love with a D500 replacement in Z-mount and maybe a decent f/4 WA that goes to 10mm. The 16-50 f/2.8 seems decent though. I'll take the DX resolution vs. a Z9 or the ISO hit vs the Z6 if I can get the pro-level AF and frame rate at a lower cost than the Z6-III.

If Nikon did that I would jump to mirrorless. As it is, I will run my DSLR to death and make the jump to mirrorless then. That will be years of lost sales. I suspect I'm not the only one in that boat.

I share similar opinion, and I'm very interested what Nikon will come up with.
BTW, viltrox 9mm f2.8 could be an excellent companion to 16-50f2.8, couldn't it?
