These were official marketing images from Nikon on a new wireless remote controller. The first picture is a render of the Nikon drawing

I like that the controller has an extra shoe on top, but I wonder if it needs batteries rather than drawing power from the camera.
Nikon could use some new flashes by now.

If Nikon is now implementing the digital hotshoe on all new cameras, than I assume it'll draw power from the camera

I honestly think most photographers have a Godox system unless they invested in Profoto. I kind of don't see a reason for Nikon to invest in flashes, like if they have to burn R&D they should invest it in glass and software.

I don't. I shoot the Nikon flash system exclusively and it rocks. Used flashes are dirt cheap and with FP sync I can shoot in any light without metering. Godox is great but personally I'd rather shoot Nikon strobes.

Why is Nikon introducing a new controller without new flashes?
I'm not a photographer, so I don't use that 3rd party stuff.
I'm hoping Nikon makes a flash similar to the Canon EL-1 v2.

Of course it will not outperform the Z8/Z9. I just want it to replace the D7200 and D500.

To truly do that they have to sell a battery grip that goes with it.

Nikon makes flashes, not strobes. I do a lot of studio stuff and for that stuff speedlights were not cutting it. Once I ran into that enough times I invested in Godox then Profoto. If I never did the amount of headshot and flash based work that I do Nikon flashes would be fine.

I honestly don't know, I personally don't care. I have 2 Profoto flashes and about 3 strobes so I have an ecosystem already. If it floats your boat look into it when it's released.

That's fine, though I wouldn't buy a grip for stills use. Other than extended run time for videos it's not worth the bulk and weight.
I'm really hoping the Z70 has 3 control dials and an AF toggle, but the Canon R7 has 2 dials and no battery grip. But so long as it has MP and a fast enough sensor readout those are the most critical attributes.

I just want them to announce this already so I can determine if I get the XF 400 4.5 or the 400 4.5S.

NR has rumored specs up. 41MP non-stacked sensor. Hope it's a fast sensor.

The new REC button is interesting. Does it mean we can record video while in photo mode like Canon? That'd be amazing.

It will be interesting to see how that is implemented. Does that suggest a fairly high resolution sensor to provide enough data for the what I assume is the AI to munch on?

Some P&S cameras had "digital zoom". It wans't very good and made mushy photos. If true, hopefully this works better.

I wonder:

  1. Will it have a 10-pin or a MC-DC2 connection?
  2. Will it have internal GPS?
  3. How much difference there will be in size and weight compared to the Z50II or Z6III.?
  4. Will Nikon add more lenses to the Z DX lineup?

I don't shoot video, so I don't care about those features. I am also perfectly happy with Nikon's current processors, so having a new one is not important to me.

Sensor size also is not critical. Anything 24mp or higher works for me.

At this price it'll be there for sure. They can't sell Z50IIs for 2k.

My biggest concern is rolling shutter and EVF blackout. Is there any camera with non-stacked sensor that's blackout free in the market?

Obviously a blackout-free experience can be implemented but it will mean the image shown in the viewfinder will lag behind the reality significantly. The blackout ensures that the viewfinder image as shown, when it is shown, has minimal delay compared to what is happening in the real world at the same time. If a frame is continued to be displayed to avoid the blackout, then it becomes difficult to follow a moving subject as what is shown is what happened in the past and so the subject may be already out of frame partially while you are still viewing the past. So the blackout is actually a good thing IMO.

A non-stacked sensor is likely to have significant rolling shutter in electronic shutter mode, so you can use the mechanical shutter and get the blackout but you also get a reasonably real time viewfinder display (not as real time as a Z8/Z9 but something that is acceptable for most applications).

Hmm, that won't be a 'High End' camera is the VF experience is not the same. Z50II behave exactly like that. High rolling shutter in ES mode. Kind of hard to go back to D500 experience for BIF. So other than higher MP and may be IBIS, what else we will gain compared to Z50II? We will find out soon I guess

If it’s not a stacked sensor it’s not a D500 replacement - it’s a fancier R7. Which really isn’t useful for bird photography. And it certainly doesn’t justify the price tag.

The only reason to shoot mirrorless as a bird photographer is being blackout free. Unless they invent some new tech, I’m not aware of a non-stacked sensor that can eliminate rolling shutter.
