It does really well with the 1.4TC if you have good light. f/9 is always going to be an issue in anything but sun.
I'm not sure if you are really gaining anything shooting with the 1.4TC vs just cropping a 600mm shot further. I still need to test this further. Since diffraction is already robbing IQ at f/9 there may be no real IQ benefit from using the TC and of course AF will be better without the TC.
My brief test with the 2xTC showed that cropping the 600mm shot was better IQ. So I think f/13 diffraction is certainly gaining you nothing and even losing you something versus the bare lens.

I was playing with 400+2x and finding similar results. The upsized image from 1.4x is pretty close 2x image. So unless the light is perfect and I can keep the ISO low (subject need to static) I don't think it's worth working with f/9. Even then cropping/upsizing is better.

The only lens I use the 2X on is the 300 2.8. I certainly wouldn't use it on a 600 6.3 and expect any usable results. But if it can't take the 1.4X, I don't have any reason to buy it.

Well finally had an opportunity to get out and test the new 600. As primarily a BIF shooter, specifically focussed on raptors I was hoping to test the bare lens as well as with the 1.4X and how it would compare to my go to setup, the 300GM with the 2X TC. I'm fortunate to have a location near me that has an amazing amount of Red-tails, kestrels and the odd Cooper's hawk. Unfortunately the raptors didn't show up today, go figure, but I did come across a couple of Great Blue herons that were willing subjects.
As light as the 300GM is I always tended to shoot with it using a monopod and gimbal setup, I did this primarily because many of the raptors that photograph spend a large amount of their time perched waiting for prey so using a monopod made sense to me. With this new 600 it's really not required, I can handhold the setup for long periods of time without becoming fatigued, this lens is serious lightweight.
Going out tomorrow to test the AF with the bare 600 as well with the 1.4TC when compared to the 300GM with th 2X TC, should be interesting.

Very nice captures and congrats on the new lens. The one thing I keep repeating, when shooting with the new 600 and I would imagine the new 400, you just forget the lens is there and you shoot. The lens doesn't draw attention to itself weight and size wise. Even the 300+2x becomes noticeable over time as you mentioned. The new 600 is just fun to shoot with. It looks like you had a great first outing!

Received a 3M lens wrap from AliExpress, and it's straight up low quality garbage despite appearing to be the same as the spendy AlphaGvrd kits. It looks the same when you take it out of the package, even has the exact same application kit packaging, but when you start applying you begin to see that it's super thin material that doesn't fit right. Lots of pieces are not quite wide enough for portions of the lens, and when you are trying to wrap a white colored lens with a dark skin, it's glaringly obvious when the pieces don't line up Not only that, the thickness of the film is cheap, I can't see this withstanding any sort of scratches or providing protection to the lens.
I've done probably 10 AlphaGvrd wraps, and all of them have been top-shelf quality that applied flawlessly and have withstood 3 years of use without a scratch, but thought that I'd been overpaying for the AG kits all this time, and it's apparent that this is a "you get what you pay for" situation. This kit doesn't compare, don't waste your money on it unless you're going for looks alone.
I intend on purchasing the true article from AG when they're available, will report back if it ends up being the same junk as this, or the same high quality that I'm used to seeing.

Yeah the AlphaGvrd kits are really top quality, I've had one on the 300GM since the launch of that lens and it has held up pretty well, I did see the start of some bubbling in the hood section caused over the summer, I was shooting the lens in mid to high 30s this summer. For this new lens I've decided to go back to the Rolandpro skin, and try that for a while.
