You can mount the hood turned 180 degrees by aligning the button on the shade with the red dot on the lens. Doing this should put the seam on the bottom.

It's pretty good quality, just an annoying tag on top of the hood seam which I just cut off and I think the seam should have been on the bottom of the hood but oh well.

Yesterday I was shooting for about 1.5hrs with the 600 and then during the rising tide the feeding oystercatchers were moving so close that my friend had removed his 2x from the 300GM and had found one of those rare times that you can shoot birds with the bare 300. So I grabbed my 300GM to not miss such an opportunity.
I couldn't believe how heavy/dense it felt. It was night and day compared to the 600.
Crazy
After about 9000 shots yesterday. Mostly with the 600. I still feel that the IQ and AF between the 600 and the 300/2x is a wash.
I think the sole reason to buy the 600 instead of (or in addition to) the 300GM/2x is for the size and weight.
I don't think it is worth it to chase some AF advantage. It is certainly not worth it to chase any IQ advantage.
I still need to cull and process shots from yesterday to see if the 840 gives any more detail over cropping the 600 further. I did do some quick back to back comparisons on oystercatchers that were just standing around and not moving or feeding so we shall see. My 1200mm test on Friday showed the cropped 600 to better than the 1200 shot....Show more →
I think (for me at least) the reason to have 600 f/6.3 despite owning 300+2X is the reach, 600mm ain't enough for raptors here, the 600 f/6.3 makes a perfect 840mm combo for flight. I did some measurements (will share in my review) the 600 f/6.3 is a bit sharper (measurable and visually looking close at raw) than 300 + 2X especially off-center but I agree that alone is not enough justification to own both.
this shot would have been borderline at 600mm (already cropped)

Hi Louie, that looks like it will work great but you lose the ability to use the original foot on a tripod without taking off the bracket. If you like to use the foot as a handle, then it still has a purpose. Otherwise, you might consider removing the foot entirely and just mounting the bracket to the 1/4”/20 hole under the original foot. That would give you all of the same functionality, except for the handle, with a lot less weight.

This looks like my solution. Thanks!

You're right and that is exactly what I have done. I rarely put the lens on a tripod so I've taken the foot off and mounted the Peak Design direct to the lens.

Sony should have put a removable lens collar on this lens. I left the OEM foot in the box, if you're not handholding you're missing out!
I kind of like that there's no removable collar on this one. I never like the aesthetics of a lens with collar removed. Something about a circular trench around the circumference of the lens and the handling with it. I've been shooting with the nub rotated to the top of the 600 6.3 lens. I like how the bare barrel feels in my supporting hand.

Same. Never been a fan of removable collars. I feel they never rotate as smoothly as a built in collar and foot
Plus, I’m one of those guys that rest the foot in my palm when holding the lens. Which allows me to go through the entire zoom range with just a flick of my thumb with lenses like the 200-600 and 400-800
But even with a super light prime like this, I would still put on an aftermarket foot and rest it in my palm when shooting

To me it makes sense to mount the hood with the button lined up with the red dot like you said but i turn it left to click in place. I can mount it like you say though if i turn the button to the right but it seems awkward for me.
It was nice out yesterday so I cut out of work early to go to a local city park where a Hammond's Flycatcher was reported the previous day.

Yeah I shoot the same way and having an aftermarket foot for that is key. I don't think you could do that too well with the OEM piece. I cut a piece of beer coozie in a U shape and wrapped cling tape around the foot to give my palm some padding.

Interesting solution! I never thought about it but as I am shooting the same way, it would make sense to the same.
Beside that it would be interesting for me if you could share your AFC settings for the A1 M1, like AFC sensitivity.
I'm usually on mode 2 for sensitivity, I have it mapped to the wheel so I can quickly change it. Sometimes I go to mode 1 if i want it more sticky on a bird.
