I will wait and see what materializes. Not sure I can get excited if Nikon is about to milk the Z6 sensor one more time, though.

Will I be strong enough to wait for a refurb sale?

I don't mind them milking the sensor, as it still stands as one of the most well rounded 24mp "entry" level sensors around. It also makes sense for Nikon to slide this camera into the Expeed 7 generation so they can have an Expeed 8 version to sell us. This camera should have come out 2 years ago, frankly.

So this will be a full frame z5ii with smaller body?

Damn. I'm interested, but only if it has an EVF!

I'm often wrong about this, but I just feel like the market has moved past 24mp sensors. I know I don't really want to go back to one. A7Cr, Q3, and RX1Riii are leading the pack on FF compacts and are all 60mp, but I guess Nikon is aiming for the lower end of the market here. My dream Nikon compact would be a metal, no screen, and a super high quality EVF you can focus manual lenses off without aides. That's a total pipe dream though.

There are two ways I can see it going at the moment (speculation): If it's going to have a big screen and no EVF, it really needs to have the z6iii sensor and probably dump the shutter. I definitely don't see Nikon going with a fixed lens for this option. Nikon's bodies are priced to sell lenses. Their entire strategy is about selling lenses.

Second likely path is a warmed over Z5ii in a new housing. Maybe fixed lens here. Smaller EVF on the top left of the body. Has to have a shutter with that sensor. If it's a fixed lens, I would guess something similar to the 28mm 2.8. I still think probably not fixed though.

I'm just expecting something toward the budget end that probably feels a little bit plasticky. Meh. I'd love to be proven wrong, but the Z5iiC label doesn't suggest otherwise.

You and I aren't "the market". I'd love an X100 sized fixed lens Nikon rangefinder design with the Z7ii sensor, but no one on TikTok wants that camera.

Regarding the two options, I worry that the earlier rumors of the "mini-ZR" is what this is...no EVF and a large/bright LCD. Now, I'm willing to give that a chance IF the body is well designed and ergonomic, not needing any other bits installed to make it usable like the Zf. The nice part of that would be that we'd likely get the Z6iii sensor instead of the Z5ii sensor.

The fact that this new rumor is a "mini Z5ii" makes me think that this is basically a full frame Z30 with the Z5ii sensor...which...and hear me out...may not be as bad as we imagine.

The huge and beautiful LCD of the X2D line has changed my mind a little bit about using the LCD as a primary tool...make it great and it becomes really fun to use. This might be why we haven't seen a Z30ii yet, if they knew this would supplant it. A full frame Z30ii would have more mass market appeal to the youth than most of what Nikon offers right now.

I’d like to see them build on the 26/28/40 series of lenses and maybe offer them in a higher tier. Specific for smaller cams. More focal lengths too.

I’m over here wanting a small system with smaller body lenses for daily for fun shooting as well as vacation etc.

I think this is basically aiming at the Sony A7C II (not the A7Cr) and the Panasonic S9.

May also be meant as a counter to Canon releasing a new entry-level with the R8 Mk II. Nikon is reusing older sensor and processor, but it's arguably more important to have a "new" camera in the market. And smaller bodies are interesting in the entry-level market.

I hope ergonomics are good and maybe we get some fun color options like a champagne finish, even if it is a bit plasticky. Kinda love my champagne F65

I hope it will have EVF.
If this is alternative for Sony a7cII, then needs to have IBIS and EVF. Would be good if had 45MP and small grip, like ac7ii. If they make without EVF, then its silly move as there is ZR. If they make it 24MP with EVF, then it would be too close to Zf.
Anyway... we'll see.
I hope for more compact pancake and muffin lens for it, so Zf users could also appreciate.

I am the market for this, and I will likely buy this camera while also upgrading my Z6 to either a Z6iii or a Z8.

I shoot landscapes and portraits mostly and have been fine with 24 megapixels ( or should I say, wary of the larger files of the higher megapixel sensors). But I’ve always thought a smaller body would be great to have as an always have it with me camera, which I would also use for street attempts and casual shooting at gatherings, etc. I envision this body being great with my 24-50 and my 28 and 40mm compacts.

I do believe this will have a side EVF, like the A7C.

Meanwhile I just want a real Z30ii so I can bolt the Viltrox 26/2.8 pancake on it for a tiny 40mm ghetto-fixed-lens camera with flexible color support =(

With exceptions, to me 20-24mp is the sweet spot that delivers all the resolution you need at a price that can be reasonable.

Sure, sometimes you want or need more and I have cameras that give me 45mp and 100mp, but my most used cameras hover between 20-24mp. And I just sold my 60mp Leica. It’s so much more about what gear “fits” you than about IQ.

The asininity of cobbling a mediocre third party FX lens onto a DX body just to get a small "normal" focal length point and shoot when Nikon won't just GIVE us one should be obvious.

I would appreciate an optional external EVF (similar to Leica Visoflex 2, with 90° upward tilt mechanism).

Well I’m disappointed, I hoped it would go into the Z6/Z7/ZF category but more photo centric than ever as they mentioned at first with the first rumors, but still the video capabilities are mentioned first like with every camera release theses days, it will be the same 24mp sensor with a low pass filter because you can film and have decent 4k with it.
The viewfinder on the side is not to emulate something new and exciting regarding photography but to go into the vloger camera type category.

The Zf was kinda a bold move even if half baked but I feel they grew less bold.

Dusting off my Fm3a and looking at a Nikon S on eBay.

The camera market is not ripe for photography. Damn you Leica, you’re so expensive.

Thank you, that’s all.

While I am generally a fan of EVFs, I might make a compromise if the price was right and the image quality high.

Back when I had the Sigma Merrill bug, I made it work by using a Hoodman type LCD loupe. Had a magnetic mount ring that attached to the LCD with double sided tape, which allowed the loupe to be mounted and dismounted at will. Still not the resolution of a good EVF.
