It's going to be interesting to see how it differentiates itself while still being worthwhile. From the sounds of it, it is basically going to be a small update making it an R6 Mark II with a smaller battery and EVF, perhaps with some AF algorithm tweaks. The R8 was already an R6 Mark II with smaller battery, worse EVF and no IBIS, but this seems to add IBIS. With the R6 II still in the lineup, it'll be interesting to see what they do here.
The original R8 is a wonderful camera, though, so I think the R8 II will be quite good. Pricing will also be interesting. You have the Nikon Z5 II still sitting in the same general pricing category as what this would be, though that has a full size battery, excellent EVF and dual card slots...so I'm hoping they somehow manage to keep the R8 II in the $1500-$1600 price range.
I can't see the R8 II having IBIS given its position as their entry level full frame body. With so many lenses already having IS, IBIS just isn't that critical to most buyers and omitting it keeps the price, size, weight, and battery drain down.

It can be hacked by using manual sensor cleaning and turning it off (after the 3rd click).
Since the new model is also EFCS-only, it might have the same workaround.
I'm mostly interested how it will work with wide angle M lenses. I have three Canon RF cameras (R5, R6II and R8) and the R8 shows much more purple color fringing with my 28mm Elmarit than the other two cameras, esp. compared with the R5. But I prefer the R8 with M lenses, because it's a small and light package.
Somehow, even though people say the R8 and R6II sensors are the same, the R6II shows less purple fringing than the R8.

Has to be the most idiotic idea ever…
I ruined my RP after dust got in. It’s completely put me off buying the R8 (or any R body tbh) I know the next step up have shutters but… I’m just not paying double the cost when all I’d appreciate is the shutter feature.
This is one of the reasons I tend to use DSLR’s more these days. I love the freedom of wandering around with no lens cap and the camera in sleep mode. If I did that with my R100/R50 the sun would probably melt the sensor.
My workhorse 5diii is battle scarred now. It’s worthless (apparently??) so it’s now constantly on standby (sleep mode) centre spot AF and silent shutter with either 40stm or 35/2 fitted minus the front cap…old now but still takes really nice pictures and the battery seems to last forever!!

I just walked into the kitchen and saw said 5diii , pressed the shutter button halfway.. sprung into life and the display says 3 full bars still… beast!!

Both my R5 and R7 have the "blast doors" and they seem to work really well. I never had a problem with my DSLRs once they introduced the dust shaker sensor. I really liked all my 5D series, but after several years with my two RFs don't think I'd go back. The focus stacking and tracking have added a lot to my wildlife and nature photography. I've thought about the R10 and R8 to save even more weight, but the exposed sensor and lack of IBIS keeps me where I am. 20+ years of digital photography

Without checking the IBIS and “ Blast Doors” adds around £1000 premium
I’m not paying that, and I accept that’s my choice. It’s not that I can’t afford to, I just can’t justify the outlay… I only take jpeg snaps. No need for a £2K+ body.

The laugh is my decades old Pentax DSLR’s have a form of IBIS plus are proven to be weatherproof plus the batteries last forever.
Canon no longer really inspires me.

But/however, getting the newest and best for myuse, the R52 and the 200-800, this level of performance, the range and the AF and the IQ that comes with that range and AF and speed has got me inspired by the world I´m happy to live in. I can finally catch a few glimpses of Life´s magic that were out of reach with older gear. That can still excite me enough to get me away from, well this forum now!
It is that my- and that use-thing combined. Not that "need" one gets when reading about some new and phenomenal gear. Like a 70-200Z in my case. A great lens for sure. But not for me. So, sitting on a pile of lenses... I´m wiser now. Perhaps. Some times.

If they eliminate the shutter mechanism entirely that is kind of a huge thing. The 1/68s readout of this sensor is decent enough for stopping most action but that comes with 12-bit RAW, which if that was the only mode would mean this would have lower DR than the R8 by a good margin. I’m hoping it’s just the same as the R8 in that department.

I think it has to be EFCS, I mean either that or they're giving it the R3 sensor just to make flash work! Also they say it has a "sensor protective curtain" and in every R that has this, it's just the shutter, not some extra dedicated thing.
Intriguing stuff. But if the date is right, then we don't have long to wait.
Isn't the existing R8 already a "mini R6 II" for way less? Other than IBIS I'm not sure what the real point of those purported specs other than for some marketing talk? If this were a mini R6 III then it would make more sense.
Sounds like a good backup camera for those of us who have an R6II. Also, it might make for a decent travel camera now that it has IBIS; it will be great to use it with the compact RF primes like the RF 16mm f2.8, RF 28mm f2.8 STM, and RF 50mm f1.8 STM.
