This is the interesting and in part quite vehement but also articulate criticism of Leica’s menu system

If you disagree, please be specific - I’d be very interested to hear.. Otherwise, it might just be a caution to those on the fence, like I was.

In general, you should be put off by your first hand experiences, not the disappointing subjective experiences of others.

Do you know enough about the cameras to know if he's correct, or is he a misguided user like so many others? He didn't bother to show the menus in his half hour long rant.

You're in Germany and should be able to find a Leica Store relatively nearby to try the system firsthand. IMO it would be worthwhile considering the cost of building an SL system to at least try before buying. To repeat what Scott already stated, base your decision on that rather than someone else's opinions (but take note of those opinions and decide if they're a factor, when you actually try the camera).

I might be in the minority but I really couldn't give a crap about the menu system in a camera. The way I shoot I usually set it up once with a couple of custom settings and after that I don't do anything in the menus again. Just get it to where you like it for whatever purpose; for me it's generally autofocus setup to track moving subjects well enough, manual mode, auto ISO with exposure compensation somewhere handy and a quick way to swap into manual ISO. Then I'm done.

I didn't watch the video to see what else he might complain about but really, most any semi-modern camera is so much better than I am that few concerns are really valid IMO.

I too found the User Profile process to be mildly confusing/annoying on the Q3 and M11 during my recent loans. Once you figure out how it works, it's fine, but I didn't shoot video, and I get wanting to have separate Video & Photo sets of profiles (that you can rename).

He articulates the main reasons well enough, and it is telling that the Leica agent had to call the office after three hours dealing with a customer. He should look into two systems from Sony: one of the FX cameras and whatever he wants for stills.

The comments are also of value. I wonder what was the underlying problem with the EV-1 he used, that gave him out-of-focus images?

The focus peaking is inadequate. It only has a low and high sensitivity setting, and high basically shows that everything is in focus. It’s a known deficiency of that camera, one that even YouTubers commented on during the initial marketing blitz.

One of my least favourite YouTubers and he’s mostly wrong due to inexperience with the camera.

He’s confusing a video profile with a user profile (yes, I agree it’s not clear). Once you set up a video profile or your camera in stills you then allocate them to a user profile, which can be named to anything you want. The camera will default to the setting (photo/video) you were in when you created the profile.

So essentially you have 6 user profiles available than can each store a photo and a video profile within them.

And I don’t have any battery drain issues.

They don’t give him cars because this is what he does. He rants and when he’s wrong, which is often, he doesn’t seem to back down or apologise.
