p.1 #1Canon shooters who use Apple hardware...buy today
If you were looking to upgrade your Apple hardware anytime soon today is the day to buy considering Apple jacked up all their pricing this morning. For example, this 14" M5 Max MBP at Microcenter this morning was $3239, and now it's updated with the new pricing at $4099 for a steep $860 increase. Amazon still has the old pricing with Prime deals at $3299 but this could change any minute. B&H is updating their page with all new pricing and they won't price match Prime day sales so there's no deals to be had there with Payboo. So if you were planning on an upgrade soon I would look at buying today if you want a new machine to get you through the next few years of the AI boom shortage. I wonder if they'll raise their prices on studio displays as well.

I was anticipating this and bought a few weeks back. I have nightmares what the M5Ultra studio will cost, or when one can actually get one

Inflation and the AI-induced chip shortage finally caught up to Apple, who had been absorbing the additional costs rather than raising prices.

Act fast… or prepare to keep that old gear running a bit longer!

I bought last year, so with the recent LR 15.4 AI Denoise speed improvements, I should be good for a while... It's storage where it's becoming increasingly painful because even conventional HDDs are now ~3x more expensive than last year... I'm revisiting how I deal with retention of outtakes to reclaim significant swaths of existing storage so that I hopefully don't have to buy anything for some time to come. That and billing an archive surcharge for all client work.

Some of that was absorbing and some was having inventory and options on supply contracts that are done now. Micron just sold the next 5 years of contract prixces to the large guys at gouging rates.

Is Apple particularly compatible with Canon files for some purposes?

I'm not much for laptops, but workstations and servers which are also suffering.
My 2025 laptop with 32GB RAM and 16TB SSDs was about $2700 to put together. Costs literally a year later would be more than double, maybe even triple. It's not even a performance machine (not meant to be). I can see easily spending over $8000 for a good laptop nowadays. That's not for me. It's too easily broken or stolen or something happening in the various travels. I'll stick with workstations back home to do the heavy lifting.

A few things:

I’m confused by your question about compatibility between Apple and Canon files? I don’t see that either of the most prevalent personal computer platforms are more or less compatible with Canon files.

As to the last paragraph, the AI explosion is sending prices for just about anything digital/computer-related through the roof —memory, SSD, old-school hardware drives, camera memory cards, you name it. It is a bad time to be buying much of anything computer-related.

If there’s any good news, it is that the producers are likely to ramp up their production to begin to satisfy the voracious demand of the AI centers, and at some point the production will likely catch up with or exceed the demand… at which point prices may come crashing down once again.

I’ve sort of changed my tune on laptops in the past few years. I no longer buy laptops that are supposed to be powerful enough to run my photography apps. As always, I continue to have a plenty-powerful desktop system with multiple monitors and tons of storage for my photography work. But I’m now down to an iPad Pro with a keyboard for travel and other remote use.

Sorry, that should have directed at the OP since the title implies some correlation and I'm no expert.

But that is not what we are seeing. It seems that the reality will be somewhere in between the consumer expectation that prices will normalize in the late 20s and the manufacturers keeping prices up for the next 5-7 years.

I'm guessing you asked because I posted an Apple equipment thread here, but I'm guessing at least half the Canon users here use Apple hardware and so it's relevant due to the major price increase.

As for laptops I have several of them scattered in different offices/dens, and anything from an M1 MBP and newer laptops work great for photography and video. Even an old little M1 Air works great in LR while I'm on the road. Obviously, the new machines are faster with the AI masking and denoise, but yes the laptops work great unless you are doing hours of heavy batch processing. The M1 Pro and newer can also support multiple 6k monitors, so if one is mobile often it makes sense to have laptops over a desktop due to having a display. The Mac minis are great too but you'll need a monitor to plug into whoever you go, or an iPad with sidecar.

What I would love someday is to figure out a solid solution to have a desktop in the main equipment room, and be able to use my mouse/keyboard at all remote TV locations so I can cull in bed, sitting on the couch, kitchen, etc without having to plug in a machine locally. Hopefully Apple figures this out as a solution for people who want to be able to use multiple display/TV locations that are all tied to the same machine in the equipment closet, and only need to assign a mouse/keyboard to that location.

I recently picked up a MacBook Air to play with. It has plenty of horsepower to run LR Classic and is actually faster than my desktop PC until it throttles on a long video render. It's kinda nice to get some editing done from the couch instead of the office. I recently had my daughter make the first round of selections on the 90 minute drive home from the tournament, saving me a lot of time. My latest workflow has been to import, select, and mostly edit on the laptop, then export the final picks to an LR catalog that can be imported into my master catalog and library on the desktop. I'm still having some issues setting the exposure on the laptop because of the adaptive brightness, so I like to make final adjustments on the desktop with calibrated monitors. If I could afford enough storage on a laptop and a 5k monitor to make the Mac happy, I could easily use this laptop more.

I bought eight 32TB spinners in January at $559 a piece. I can't believe my eyes what happened in the meantime. I was getting ready for all my retirement trips this year, never mind half of them got canceled, but I guess this gives me even more years before I have to invest again.

TBH, I also wondered why the thread was in the Canon forum… and I violated my own rule about not replying to off-topic posts… if I can make myself resist… ;-)

I think that the “General Gear Talk” forum would actually be the right place for this topic. (The point about “at least half of the canon users” likely applies to half of everyone in all of the forums, right?

;-)

I would have posted it in the general gear forum back in the day when things were more active but now that it seems there's very few of us regulars left here that it doesn't seem to matter much anymore. We used to have a full page of threads active in a day and I a week or so ago I logged on to see only three threads active in the past 2 days. I guess everyone went elsewhere, wherever that may be.

I also posted it here thinking that some people weren't aware of the price hikes and wouldn't have been looking in the general gear forum anyway. I at least saved one person who PM'd me some money with it though so it wasn't a waste of time.

If you look at posts listed as being up to 9 days ago, Canon is very low, about 3.4% of the 5 dedicated forums, not including film.

Canon 8
Nikon 50
Sony 83
Fuji 25
Leic+Alt 69

So according to the number of recent posts hardly anyone uses Canon at FM.

Wow, they are now more than double five months later. You timed it right.

24TB drives were about $400 in late 2024. I got some 28TB drives for $480 in late 2025. I did not see the 32TB yet.

I got some 18s and 20s last year during various sales for around $250. It was kind of the $/TB sweet spot.

Canon is not the cool system. Hasn't been for a long time, apparently. The move to RF mount eliminated most third party lens options, which I'm sure caused some (additional) hatred but also simply meant not much to talk about stuff other than actual Canon gear, which Canon hasn't exactly been churning out on a frequent basis.

From my time on the sports sidelines though, Canon is still a popular system. I'd say it's pretty close between Canon and Sony, with Nikon somewhat farther back. I'd guess if I was on the BIF or safari sidelines, that might be a different mix of gear. It would be interesting if Fred were to do a site-wide 'census' to drill down into what genres members cover, just to have somewhat of a better understanding of the audience. Gut reaction tells me that FM is not representative of the overall/global photography market (people using dedicated cameras rather than smartphones or similar devices) because of what I wrote above; that the forum traffic doesn't mirror what I'm seeing IRL, though of course my interactions with photographers IRL is biased due to the specific genres which I cover most. FM members, at least on the gear threads, are interested in the equipment (surprise!) and many are not hesitant to switch systems if they feel it will help them in some way. I think this explains the significant exodus from Canon, and initially maybe also from Nikon, over to Sony. Because many on FM like the latest, greatest, most shiny new things they can buy. Sony had that hook being the first FF mirrorless system, then continued to rapidly develop it while Canikon seemed to have their heads stuck in the sand. By the time Canon (and maybe less so Nikon) released their mirrorless systems, significant damage to their share of the enthusiast market had already been inflicted.

Or, maybe most Canon users are busy using the gear (whether as a hobby or making money) and have other things to do than visit FM multiple times per day.

According to sales, Canon is not so unpopular as sub-10%. I was quickly checking thread count rather than post count, but it gives an idea. FM is a mostly Sony and Alt site.

It would seem that Canon discussions are not nearly as robust as in the past. I'm not nearly as active on the forum as I once was either, and I have a feeling that's true of many. But I'm still a Canonite.

Things have been pretty slow on the Canon forum for a while and seem to be getting slower.

One issue related to the move to R is that some of us who are still using the older system and EF lenses have less to say about contemporary Canon gear. But it also seems like there’s less activity around Canon in general. As someone pointed out, the action seems to be moving to the Sony forum more and more.

I still think it make sense to use the general forum for topics like this. I check it daily.
