p.1 #1 · Using older dslr cameras

Well I just received a used 60D that I scored off eBay for cheap.
I’ve been picking up these older bodies for the past 3-4yrs
Currently have the 30,40,50,70,80D and now the 60D
The 10 & 20D might be a little too primitive and the 90D is still a lot more than I’m wanting to pay

Spent all weekend playing with the 60D, came minus body cap but seller had taped over the mirror box 👍🏻
Language was Spanish and firmware was original
20mins after it had arrived I’d changed the language, updated the firmware, checked the sensor and got the shutter count (19,457)

The AF seems accurate enough
Loving the colours

Anyone else enjoying giving these old DSLR’s another run??

The last DSLRs I used in the field were in 2020, the 5DsR, 5D IV, and 90D in 2019.
I got the a7R VI on the day of release June 4. Life is too short not to use high-grade gear, and a variety of it for different purposes.
Somewhere I have the 30D, 50D, 70D, 80D, and of course 90D, but I would not have any use. Why not get the 90D if you want an EF-s body?

Not sure about the life being too short bit…
I honestly like the images out of these older cameras…. I do have a R100/R50 and several RF lenses… but I dunno what it is about mirrorless but I find the whole picture taking bit harder than I do using OVF cameras. Don’t know why this is, but it is??
I use the R stuff for family trips but for sheer photography enjoyment I always pick the dslr stuff.. either Canon or Pentax…. and I know they are obviously inferior to modern mirrorless, but I can’t help what I like. My most used is the 6D… I love the pictures out of that thing!!

Old film cameras, yes. Old DSLRs, absolutely not.

I have a 5D2 and have been using it more than my R6 & R100. The dslrs are older & heavier, but still deliver. The R system cameras are light weight & have lenses that don't exist in the EF mount. My 600 & 800 f/11's are proof of that

I used to have a 5D2, sold it when I got the 5diii. Later added the 6D and 6Dii also picked up a mintish 5dc.
Yet I’d like to try/compare the old 5dii once more. People say the colours are unique to that particular model.
Would you agree??

Since I shoot a lot of wildlife, run-n-gun stuff, and a lot of 4K videos...I do not miss my old 7D at all. Don't get me wrong, it was good for when it was released (at its price point, I couldn't afford a 5 or 1 series back then) and I still have some great photos from a wedding I shot back then with a rented EF 70-200 2.8.

But for everything I do, the R5mk2 has spoiled me. A buddy and I bought R6mk2s at the same time 3 years ago, and then I upgraded to the R5mk2 about a year ago. Recently was with this friend out in the field taking nature and wildlife photos and used his camera (he wanted to try out mine so we swapped) and I thought to myself the R5mk2 has mentally trapped me in the R5 (or higher) line for Canon.

I think they were slightly different on the original 5D due to the lack of AA filter and supposedly, different color science. I always liked the files from the 5D & 5D2.

I had a 5D3 and 7D2 when I bought the R6 in late 2020. I bought the R6 to address specific deficiencies in my existing cameras, mainly the AF. I quickly sold the 7D2 but held on to the 5D3 for a few months as I adjusted to the R6. I hardly touched it though. I'm not anti DSLR, I just have no reason to use one now that something better has come along.

No.
Nobody could tell me which picture was shot with 5DII vs 5DIII when I used both during a shooting.

…. and if you are not satisfied with the colours of a picture just use the sliders in your software to adjust 😬

Mirrorless cameras process color differently than dslrs due to updated processors, better dynamic range & better lenses/lens coatings.

What I’ve learnt - or more what I think I’ve learnt… is that older models don’t correct lenses like newer cameras. I find that vignette seems to make the image pop more so than a highly corrected image. Yes, I know we can turn off lens corrections.. but I just enjoy buying older stuff and comparing. I could have the R5 or even R1 if I really really wanted it…fact is I don’t. I get a huge buzz from creating nice pictures with “cheap” gear that’s now deemed obsolete.
Any modern mirrorless will give ultra sharp images… but I’m beginning to see why some say there’s more to a picture than sharpness.

Plus it’s fun

I’m sat outside on the patio with this 60D currently hooked up to the ef 70-200L F4isii. The old 300/4is is here along with the mighty 100-400Lii
The 60D is playing nicely with all 3.

Every Canon EF lens works well on any Canon DSLR or DSLM. There's still plenty for you to buy and to compare.

🤣👍🏻

Tbh..I’m scraping the barrel these days
Just come inside and viewed the snaps on my laptop…honestly to me the files look great. Yes if I go 200% pixel peeping then it all starts breaking apart.
Where I was sat, there was a label on one of the plants 30-40ft away. I took a random snap… I’ve just viewed that label on my laptop , zoomed in… every bar on the barcode is crisp, the number beneath is clearly readable. Now I know mirrorless would be even sharper..but Geez!!!
This crazy level of detail from a cheap used £60 dslr
It blows my mind tbh

Hence why I love comparing these old different combinations.

We are off to Scotland in a few weeks. Normally I’d take either canon M system or my R stuff. But I’m now thinking I’m going to take this old 60D with a few nice lenses and just go with the flow. I can always revisit (6hr drive away)

I picked up a 5D II a couple of weeks ago and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. Sure it's got some limitations compared to my current gear (Nikon Z5 II), but I picked up some good but somewhat affordable used glass for it, (16-35/4L, 24-105 STM and 70-300L), and it's a great kit. I may eventually add a 5D IV if I can find a clean, low mileage copy for a reasonable price (the majority of those I see for sale are VERY high shutter counts, or quite expensive). It's not going to become my primary gear, but the 5D II feels amazing in the hand, and the files look great if you expose properly.

I also got a Fringer EF-Z adapter that works quite well so I can also use the EF lenses on my mirrorless bodies.

I also have a 30D and Digital Rebel for nostalgia sake since they are so dirt cheap (paid $100 for both of them combined), with a 15-85 in addition to the EF glass. I sold my 7D and other EF-S lenses since they won't get use now that I have the 5D II for when I want to take a DSLR out for a spin. (they paid for the majority of the 70-300L in trade at MPB).

I am still rocking a 5d3, 5d4, and 7d2. I use the 5d3 for an everyday carry and the 5d4 for more serious projects. The 7d2 gives me some telephoto reach here and there, though the 5d4 cropped is mostly as good. Being of a certain age, I just can't go forward with a EVF. Optical for me thanks. I appreciate the improvements of mirrorless, and am not a complete Luddite. But the bodies I have along with a nice collection of glass is entirely adequate for me. My only complaint is the weight and size of both the bodies and glass. I did some pro work (corporate) before retiring and the leftovers from that endeavor are still serving me well. And being of a certain age, I like to take my time and deliberately compose my work as opposed to blasting a hundred shutter counts on a snapshot. Maybe if I tried a R5, I'd get some GAS, but there is just something about an optical VF, just sayin"
