First, am VERY aware of all the trade-offs if I end up "downgrading". So the question is strictly about the A7Riii EVF, nothing else. Preferrably from anyone who concurrently own[ed] both, but also from current A7Riii owners. I know it's an extremely personal and subjective question relative to every individual and hard to quantify.
My issue is the A7Cii EVF sucks (for ME, a personal & subjective opinion) when using manual focus lenses and zooming in for critical focus. When I bought the camera I didn't intend to use it that way, but we all know how that goes, and yeah that's all on me for not taking it into account. For background I had a A7Rii and don't remember getting annoyed with the EVF, but that was 9 years ago. (took a long break) On paper the A7Riii EVF is supposed to be better than the M2; 3686k vs 2359k.
Am guessing some may ask why the A7Riii:
1. Loved RAW files from the A7Rii I had. M3 ➤ same sensor.
2. Don't need/want anything from the newer versions. M4/M5 much better EVFs, but not looking to spend that much, especially since 61MP would be huge overkill for me.
Tell me what you love or hate about the EVF, especially manual focus at max magnification at focal lengths 50mm or longer.

A7cII and A7rIII happen to be the two Sony bodies I have, but I'm not sure I can be of much help here.
I think in the end what you're describing is personal. The cII EVF is obviously smaller, but I've never had a problem with it, and I also use it primarily with manual focus lenses, mainly Voigtländer. I guess I just adapt?
Never once have I thought it sucked. I also tend to not really notice or pay attention to the larger size of the A7RIII EVF when I use that. They both do what I need and work just fine.
Sometimes I even think I get along better with the cII one, since it's easier for me to see the whole frame, wearing glasses.
The one thing that bothers me about the cII EVF is the lack of a deeper eye cup. I often have to cover the light leak from the sun with one hand. I should get some soft rubber thing like I had for the original A7.

As a former A7III, A7RIVa, A7RV, A7CR owner:
Even A7III has significant better EVF due to better magnification, the R line is no comparison, different league. Also I can assure you EVF in CII,CR is perfectly usable, even for MF assist, CII is more forgiving because of the lower resolution sensor. The portability overweights ergonomics, the eye cup is quite small, so gives a significant less shading compared normal A7 line.
Overall I didn't particularly like A7CR as a photographic camera, however the main reason was the articulating, low resolution screen, not EVF.

It depends on your habits.

I wear glasses all the time (I'm strongly nearsighted) and use A7CII mostly with manual focus lenses and it works fine for me. The only problem is when there is strong sunlight directly from the side which can make it difficult to see through the EVF without some additional light blocking by hand or such.
I also have an A9 with a similar EVF as A7RIII but on the whole I prefer the more compact A7CII except when shooting fast action with AF lenses.

I currently use a 5.7 M dot EVF in my Canon R5 II that I find quite usable and I found the 9.4 M dot viewfinder of the Sony A7r V very nice as well. Smaller than that, however, and I struggle. With 3.7 M dot viewfinders the magnification and optics matter a lot. Some are fairly useable others are harder to use. Eye point, magnification, and optics of the viewfinder all matter a lot. I haven't used a 5.7M or 9.4M dot viewfinder that causes me problems, but maybe they are out there and I know as I age viewfinders are going to be an even more challenging issue.

You have to test it for yourself; everybody has different standards, especially when talking about EVFs. Personally, I found the A7R III EVF was fine except in daylight: when half-pressing the shutter, the resolution gets much lower. That said, my A1 EVF is much better but could still be improved; even at 9.44M dots, it's not up to a good OVF.

I'm able to MF on the a7rc viewfinder just fine in most cases. EVF resolution and magnification are good enough. The only areas where its a struggle for me is when I'm shooting in full sun as the small eye-cup doesn't do a great job of creating a seal/shade. There are third party eye-cup attachments you can add and I'll probably due so next time I travel with the a7rc.

I’ve been surprised at how well I’ve adjusted to the a7C II EVF. For sure I wish it was technically better and larger, but I’ve also found that I much prefer the comfort of an offset EVF vs the centered ones on the other Sony bodies.
One thing that really helps me a lot is I use an aftermarket extended silicon eyecup for the EVF that mounts to the hotshoe.

Big thank you to **everyone** who replied! Looking back, I should have explicitly stated that "the A7Cii EVF sucks” is my personal & subjective opinion, and that EVF experiences vary on a person-to-person basis. E.g., Juha & Steve, both 100% eyeglass wearers, find ease of use fine vs. challenging. Apologies if I offended anyone; that has been corrected.
After reading through everyone’s responses a couple of times, what came to mind is my (personal) issue with the EVF may be secondarily tied to ergonomics. It’s hard to exactly remember, but I think the larger grips on my old A7Rii and OG A7s made it easier for me to minimize shake. Average size hands and never gave a second thought about those EVFs. (tend to shoot big/fast/heavy lenses at longer focal lengths a lot more than smallish wides) darbo’s comment about “offset EVF vs the centered ones” was also something I forgot about.
Although I’m leaning towards selling the A7Cii, if that happens no regrets; it was fun while it lasted.
Again, appreciate every individual who took time out of their day to reply and share their opinions and experiences. To all of you A7c[ii|R] owners, keep enjoying your cameras.

I went from a A7Rlll to A7CR back to a A7RlllA.
I thought I could make the C work but the ergo, viewfinder and non tilt screen bothered me too much.
And the A7Rlll isn't much bigger for heavier.

The Smallrig one works well for me - keeps my eye far enough away to remember how small the evf is.

There is quite a bit of negative discussion around the A7C II and A7CR EVF, and I do think some of it is fair. At the same time, we have to acknowledge that the limitations likely come from the compact design rather than Sony holding back on resolution or magnification.
With that said, the EVF on the A7CR, which I believe is the same unit used in the A7C II, does not bother me in practice. The 0.70x magnification is lower than the 0.78x found in most Sony bodies, so it feels a bit less immersive for those of us who do not wear glasses, though it may actually be more comfortable for glasses wearers.
The viewfinder is still bright, and while higher resolution would always be welcome, I can still see enough detail for precise manual focus when using magnification. Functionally, it is not really holding me back.
I do hope they can improve this further in the A7C III and A7CR II. Hoping for 3.7MP and 0.75x next time around.

I had no issue with A7CR's EVF. I use the LCD screen much more for composing anyway, EVF is when the difficult to see the screen due bright light. I considered the built in EVF as a feature in C line.
Personally if I can design a camera, I'd like a 4" high brightness 3M dot resolution OLED tilting (not flippy) screen, even without EVF (for saving space for screen), but I'm ok with the current EVF in A7CR. But the low resolution flippy screen don't work for me as a hip shooter. I'm envy for X2DII's tilting screen.

FX2 has 3.68m-dot Quad-VGA OLED EVF and I was looking into that, but it is bigger/heavier compared to A7C series, so it makes it more comparable to A7R III... The issue with FX2 is that air vent is pushing the air to nose per Phillip Bloom review... Hopefully Sony will bring the bigger evf for next generation, but they have not done that with RX1R III which pushes me to use the lcd more indoors... Sigma FP has a good size external 3.68M 0.83X evf, but Sigma didn't even consider using that with BF...

I wear glasses and A7CII EVF was the worst I have used for a long time. A7rIII, A9, A7rV, Fuji X100V, GFX100RF... Ok, RX100VA has worse EVF. Anyway, this is the reason why I sold my A7CII. Not pleasant to use.
The problems is not so much in the low resolution of EVF, it is the optics. A7RII and A9 (classic) have similar resolution EVF but they are larger and much more pleasant to use. Same with Fuji X100V. When EVF is very small with low optical magnification, it becomes very critical to set and use. One has to have the eye just in perfect place to get the best view, and even then corner can get blacked out for someone using eyeglasses.
The problem of A7CII/r EVF is emphasized by the very underwhelming LCD. I believe mediocre screen quality must be also a cost cutting measure. Sony tried to squeeze A7CII price down and the more expensive A7Cr followed the same path?
BTW We are past the point where resolution was the key speech of EVF. A7rV high resolution EVF is a good example of this. It gets blurry when focusing. Lower resolution GFX100RF EVF is much more pleasant to use, partly because it delivers full resolution all the time, partly because of more pleasant tonality, and also because of better optics.
I really hope Sony will improve EVF in the third generation of A7C cameras

The type of vision correction clearly matters. Over the years my vision has changed and like most people not for the better. When I was younger, I could use a much worse viewfinder. Now especially with my current prescription with progressive lenses with zones for focussing at different distances I find a bigger viewfinder with a longer eye point super helpful. (Oh and I am starting to develop cataracts so a brighter viewfinder is really nice too). Once upon a time I used to be happy with the A7r II's little viewfinder, now it is a real chore to use. Part of that is my standards have gone up, I think, but part of it is that my vision has gotten worse.

I'm also in the -5.5 range. I ram my eyeglass lens directly on the viewfinder "cup" and can see the whole view nicely and I think the EVF view (resolution and magnification level) is sufficient for composing and focusing. My wife and I have the exact opposite reactions, and probably the biggest difference between us is that she wears glasses while I wear contacts. We both do macro shots with our Tamron 90mm and will need to jump into manual focus for honing in on focus at times. For me, the A7C series EVF is perfectly fine and I have no issues with it. For her, she struggles quite a bit and finds the EVF on our A7RIV much easier to use. I do have an aftermarket eyepiece on the A7C to make it easier for her which seems to have helped a little bit, but she says it's a very minor difference overall.
