New to Nikon and just received my Z5ii with 1.1.0.
As with just about all other cameras I downloaded FW and put new FW onto SD card at the root level. Tried to install new FW via SD card and continually got message that my settings prohibited me from updating to new FW.
Then decided to use the Nikon Snap app and after pairing with iPhone got the new FW downloaded and installed.
Is what is strange after successfully downloading/installing new FW then the camera asked if I wanted to install new FW via the SD card. To be clear it had already been installed via the Nikon app.
What have I done wrong or what just happened? Strange set of questions to me.

Very strange. I just copied the file to the root of the SD card and it worked fine. I don't know of any settings that can prevent an update.
After updating from SnapBridge, did you verify the version number?
Yes, version OK. Perhaps it was because its a new camera and at that time I had not taken any exposures.
No card lock. Had 28-200 lens only on it.

Third party lenses being mounted can throw that error, and having the little lock on your SD card can too.
I just checked that Nikon update page. It has a clear warning about not doing this upgrade with any lens other than a Nikkor Z-mount or FTZ/FTZii. What it doesn't address is what sort of lens, if any, must be attached to the FTZ. (All my lenses but one are pre-AI, one is AIS.
So I wonder, exactly what does this upgrade do? More to the point, how essential is it? I have version 1.0. None of the other upgrades listed through 1.10 seem performance-related. This latest one might be.
