Cool idea for a thread! Love reading through everyone's journeys.

Owned in chronological order:
PowerShot S3 IS (my uncle gifted this to me when I was 13 and it catapulted my love of photography)
40D
1D III^
A2E
1D IV
6D
1DX^
1Ds III^ (IR-converted; the files from this body were pure magic and I still miss it)
5D III (my least favorite 5-series; the files always felt too "digital" to me, even though there wasn't a big objective difference between this camera and others)
5DsR*^
R* (full-spectrum-converted)

Used extensively for paid gigs or through family members but not owned:
PowerShot G3
5D Classic
20D
30D
50D
7D

"Catch and release" bodies I bought or traded for cheap and immediately resold to make money to buy lenses:
5D II
5D III
XTi/400D
RP

No set timeframe but planning to buy when good deals come along (which could be years from now, depending on the body):
R5
R5 II
R1

* = Still own
^ = All-time favorite

Bought a 60D in 2013 as my first camera, then upgraded to a R5 in 2023, then bought a second used R5 this year to loan to my sister for her safari trip.

Canon Rebel S II (thanks, Dad!)
Canon A2E (worked the whole summer to afford it)
Canon EOS 1N (still have it)
Canon PowerShot G3 (meh, but hey, digital!)
Canon 40D (premature shutter failure)
Canon 60D (hated that thing, sold it immediately)
Canon PowerShot G11 (ditto)
Canon 5D Mark II (loved this camera in spite of its single usable focus point)
Canon 5D Mark III (stolen, along with 50L)
Canon 5D Mark III (never really gelled with it)
Canon EOS M (so small, so slow yet so much fun)
Canon 5D Mark IV (shot the snot out of it, still have it)
Canon EOS M6 II (probably my most used camera once we had kids)
Canon EOS M50 II (white, because it was cheaper)
Canon R5 II (speed demon? yes. 100% likeable? I haven't decided. Might be a 5D III feeling...)

1. Roughly 1998/1999 - Very early digital Canon Powershot. 2MP model, AA batteries, came with some relatively useful software including a stitching function which I thought was amazing.

2. 2006 - 30D - loved it and took it everywhere. In hindsight, I should have sold it sooner when it still had some value but by the time I got around to it, there was no point and I gave it away.

3. 2010/2011 - 5D mark II. The sensor was a revelation; the AF was absolutely not. Got some fantastic shots out of it over the years, but the AF ended up dictating composition far too much. The matte focusing screen helped for relatively stationary subjects.

4. 2013/2014 - 5D mark III. This was a reluctant purchase as I couldn't see any real benefit at the sensor level but having usable off-centre AF and tracking capability was attractive. Managed to sell the 5D2 for a decent price and never regretted it due to the AF capability which expanded the shooting envelope.

5. 2015ish - G7X (retrospectively the mark I?) - seemed like a better value RX100 with Canon colours and UI/UX. Never really gelled with it sadly, I did get some decent shots but it was so unloved that when it was lost in a move, nobody in the house noticed for months.

6. End of 2018-2020 - the 5D mark III took what neither of us knew would be its last big photo trip, because B&H/Fuji organised a massive sale on the 50R and GF lenses which became my landscape and travel kit. The 5D mark III became a dedicated sports and action camera.

7. 2021 - Bought into the RF mount with an R6 and 28-70 f/2. Sold the 5D mark III to someone who brought a macbook to the sale, connected some app I'd never heard of which read out a totally different shutter count from what I had (although only slightly higher in the end). He didn't seem too fussed thought and bought it anyway!

8. 2024 to present - Preordered the R5 mark II on release as the 20MP on the R6 was a bit limiting and the zero blackout viewfinder sounded like a great idea. It has turned out to be superb for me and I can't go back to anything else for action.

I use a 1Dx, a 1DXII and R3 regularly. Shot an event with the 1Dx yesterday.
I also still have a 1DsII, 1DII and the DCS-560 that work, but I don't use. Also a broken 1Dx, error 70 if you try to take a photo. Not worth repairing

What I really want is a high megapixel R1/R3. Hopefully that will be next on the list, though I'm not holding my breath.

Over the years and many used concurrently of course,

AE-1 (not P)
A1
EOS 50
EOS 50e
D60
10D
20D
1Ds
5D x2
1Ds III
5D III

My use of Canon ended at the close of 2013 when my wedding business ended due to health issues. Went into the studio using MF digital, Nikon and then Sony. I still have the original AE-1 on my shelf as a display piece.

Been awhile since I shot Canon, but have considered jumping back in with an R5.

I'm so old my memory is too faded to remember but I will say that my favorite camera is listed multiple times on this thread. The wonderful, versatile Canon tank that can double as a weapon. The magnificent Canon 1DMkIIn. Every time I see one listed I want to buy it but force myself not to.

My most memorable photographs were taken with this camera. Diving pelicans, my daughter's ballet leaps and those irreplaceable birthday and holiday scenes. Sensor size you say Did not have an iota of negative effect on the quality of the photos rendered with this camera.

Great genealogies, all. Edd, that is an impressive list, and more impressive is how many you still have. Pretty awesome!

John Power, great comment on the 1d IIn, calling it magnificent. That is a very accurate one word description. I loved mine—to this day, it is an all-time favorite dSLR.

I started this thread and have thoroughly enjoyed all the posts.

FUNNY THING: My original post, I left out one of my top 2 film cameras, the AT-1. It wasn't hugely popular, but that matching needle meter was stellar.

Nice thing, we can edit or add a new post any time as an update.

Thanks for contributing, all.
