p.1 #1 · What is your Canon Family Tree / Genealogy? Here is mine:

Here is a fun project—-log your Canon cameras through the years, from start to end.

I’ll start, going back to the film days, circa 1989. All will be in succession as much as possible, from memory.

Canon film bodies:

1. AE1 Program (bought used, ca 1989. $125 for body and FD 50mm f1.8 lens.
2. AT-1. (used, circa 1990). Phenomenal matching needle meter. Top two of my Canon film bodies. (Added May 3, 2026. forgot at time of original post!)
3. F1n with Power Winder F (used, on consignment). $275 all in, about 20 years old. Power Winder F worth $200 at the time, so it was a stellar consignment deal.
4. FT QL (used). 25-30 years old at time. $160 range, with FL 50mm f1.4 breech-lock lens—-nice combo.
5. Elan (new) first EOS AF body. $475 range, circa 1992.
6. Elan IIe. (new). 5 AF points. Circa 1995-96. Bought soon after release. $550ish. My mother also bought one, which she gave me a few years ago, and I still have.
7. A2e (new—-I went backwards in technology from Elan IIe to A2e. Slower AF, 3 AF points. Better build, though.
8. 1N RS (used) 10 fps, pellicle mirror. Incredible camera. $1100 range, used, circa 2002 1-series film bodies had same build quality as the 1d series. My favorite-ever film camera.

The first Elan, above, was my move to an AF SLR system, i remember studying for weeks to see what system to buy into, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, etc. At that time, I subscribed to Popular Photography and American Photo—--the magazines had great equipment reviews and invaluable-to-me info, plus many pages of company ads. Canon and Nikon were the frontrunners for me, and I decided to stay with Canon. I remember how neat it was to have to decide on a system—-it wasn’t easy.

Canon Digital bodies:

I started with Canon digital in 2007. It was an easy choice this time to stay with Canon, as I had a couple of Canon lenses, plus ergonomics and buttons where familiar between the EOS film and Digital formats.

9. 30d (new). Approx $600)
10. 1d IIn (used) Approx $800. I was amazed at the creaminess of the 1.3 crop over the 1.6 crop of the 30d.
11. 10d (used). Approx $180, with metal-mount 50mm f1.8. Novelty buy. Gave to brother—-he still has the setup.
12. 1d III (used), have owned 2, still have one.
13. 1ds (used). Bought to try full frame, even though it was 10-12 years old. Just sold.
14. 1dx II (used). Have owned 2—sold one after replacing with a lower shutter count.
15. 1d IV (used). Nostalgia buy, last of 1d and 1.3x crop. Great camera.
16. 1ds III.used). Nostalgia buy, last of 1Ds series. Stellar meter.

After all is said and done, i still own:
Elan IIe EOS film.
1d III
1d IV
1dx II
1ds III

It has been a great ride through the years with the Canon systems, with tons of shooting and collecting fun, with buying and selling of bodies, lenses, flashes, off-camera cords, etc. always sold to upgrade, not to profit or deal.

Note: I am a hobbyist only, and don”t take professional-level photos, but…….i absolutely love the image quality produced with good cameras and lenses. I’ve always sided with pro-level gear because I love low light/no flash pictures, and wide apertures. Thus, I had to spend more for better gear to allow me achieve these attributes in a photo. There is a difference, for sure! Just recently I’ve been getting into off-camera flash, and Im really enjoying it!

The vast majority of my equipment has been bought used, tons of it through FM Forums. I often waited until a body was a couple models old before purchasing—-it allowed for me to get great gear at drastically reduced prices. In the early days, my main purchase sites were B&H, Focus, Adorama, and a couple more. That was by dialing the phone and verbally placing orders, giving product numbers I’d get from the magazine ads. Saturdays were long days, as the stores were all closed, so orders couldn't be placed. Only once did I have a bait and switch, when I was talked into a Sigma 35-80 over a Canon 35-80 or 28-80. A couple days after receiving the kit, I called and challenged it, and they replaced the Sigma with the Canon. That was the only kit I ever bought, if I remember correctly. I think it was Smile Photo, and the original Elan.

There might be something I’ve left out——i forgot totally about both the FT QL and 10d until right before going to press!

And yes, some day I’ll add Canon mirrorless to the mix—-not upgrade to, but add to the current setup.

It was fun recalling everything! Hopefully others will enjoy it, too.

Starting in 1983.

AE-1 Program with 50/1.8 (added Motor Drive MA), New F-1 w/AE Finder FN (1984 Olympics edition) (added AE Motor Drive FN), T90, EOS-1, EOS A2E, EOS-1N, EOS-3, 1D, 1DII, 1DIIN (x2), 1DIII (x2), 1DIV, 1DX, 1DXII, R6II, R6 (a demo camera on clearance), R5II.

Still have but don't use: EOS-1, 1N, 3, 1D, one 1DIIN, both 1DIII and all the mirrorless (my current system). I wish I had kept the New F-1 and T90, but I was young and wanted AF, so used the cash to move to EOS.

The sentimental favourite would be the New F-1 and T90 though I think my overall favourite Canon film camera to use was the EOS-1V. I never bought one, but had access to one for a while and thought it was great, really refined. I was on the edge of getting one but instead held out for the 1D, which was a massive game changer. It was the biggest system transition for me having first been through manual focus to AF. Going digital didn't just mean buying the camera, it also meant buying the computer system(s) (desktop and laptop) to support it. DSLR to mirrorless was not a major transition and for me it ranks third, with first being film to digital and second being manual focus to AF. In the DSLR era, the 1DX was a major performance improvement over previous 1D cameras. The 1DIV was good and the 1DIII was a major headache with multiple service issues and recalls with both bodies. Mirrorless runs circles around everything that came beforehand. It's kind of insane that with a mid-tier body like the R6II I can shoot sports at 40fps and come back with a much higher percentage of technically useable (in focus) images than I ever got with the 1D series. Like the EOS-1V closing out the film era, the 1DXIII was very tempting back in January 2020 when I was able to try one... but it was so obvious that mirrorless was the future. So glad I did not bite on the 1DXIII (not to mention that most of my work shut down for ~2 years due to Covid-19). The R5II improves on the R6II even more. And the R1 somewhat more, but I haven't been able to justify that body because the R5II is so close to it for what I need most of the time.

Film
AE-1 P --> New F1- 84 Olympics --> EOS 1V

My coworkers kept trying to convince me to go Digital. I kept telling them not until there was an affordable full frame. I was shooting both the F1 and 1V with two sets of lenses FD and EF. The day the 5D appeared in Calgary I rushed to the store to test it with some FD glass. I had the Canon Lens Converter FD-EOS (1.26X) but the store manager was reluctant at first til the staff who knew me as a regular customer piped up. Outside I went with the FD 800 and FD 400/4.5 tests were what I expected and I left the store with 5D in hand. Over the next few years I sold off some of my FD lenses and started to grow the EF lenses.

Digital
5D --> 5D MKII --> 5D MKII(converted IR) --> 5D MKII(converted Full Spectrum)--> 5DsR--> 1DX-->5Ds(Converted Full Spectrum)

The Mirrorless EOS R was not in the plans for me as the 5DsR had a higher resolution and I didn't want to go backwards though when the Ra was announced I jumped.

Mirrorless
Ra --> R5 --> R5(converted Full Spectrum)--> R5 MKII

As much as I liked my 5DsR after I got the R5 I found it was only used for sentimental shooting days so I eventually sold it. Once the R5 came out I slowly started to added RF glass and downsized my EF glass.

Still have New F1-84 Olympics, Ra, R5, R5(converted Full Spectrum),R5 MKII though I haven't used the F1 in years.

Ironically my sentimentalism for FD glass grew and I since added more FD glass and FL glass. With the new SHOTEN LM-CR ME lens adapter (Leica M to RF) combined with my Novoflex (FD to Leica M) this allows me to use focus assist and focus confirmation thus I will be enjoying shooting FD glass more often.

A1 (1982?) - T90 (1986?) - 1N (1994)
Completely abandoned film in November 2000 when all my EF gear was stolen. Back then, that was just the 1N and three lenses. The stolen Gitzo tripod was the best thing that happened that day. The stolen car that all of the above was in was less good.

D30 (2001) - D60 (2002) - 1DS (2003) + Rebel - 1Ds2 + 40D - 1Ds3 + 5D2
1DX + 5D3 - 1DX2 + 5D4 + 5DsR
R - R5 + R3 - R5m2 + R1

Pretty simple really

Still have the T90 with the 20-35L and the dead 1DS.

I switched from film to Canon digital through the early 2000's. At that time, I was shooting mostly Pentax 35mm, some Contax 35mm, lots of Fujifilm MF, and a little 4x5. I still shoot film, with a Canon 7 rangefinder, a pair of EOS 7 (Port & Starboard), and the first EOS camera; the Canon 650. These film cameras were all purchased within the last ten years, and so they both pre-date and post-date the conversion to digital.

Here's my list. * indicates the Canon cameras I still have.

I started with the AE-1 and 50 1.8, back in 82 (I still have that camera) then switched to the Digital Rebel 300 in 2004, From there it gets fuzzy lol. Not in any particular order but after that, I had the 5D, 5D2, XT-i, 1D, 40D, 7D, 1DMK3, SL-1, 6D, RP. Currently, I have the R6 & R100. Not related, but I still have and use periodically, the Sony F-717, from 2002.

t3i -> long detour into Nikon/Fuji-land -> R6 -> R5 II

I have my beef with Canon as a corporate entity, but the combination of "made domestically in Japan" + "simply works every time you turn it on" can't be beat.

Pretty simple:

XT (to test the waters before converting to digital from film)
5D
5DII
5DsR

The 5DsR is still going strong and is still the highest resolution Canon camera. (I’m planning on replacing it this year, almost certainly with a non-Canon alternative, unfortunately. At this point the rumored Sony A7rVI is the leading candidate. But it has been a good two-decade run with Canon.)

(Before that I used a long string of film gear, but not from Canon… and I had used some other dearly digital gear since perhaps around 1995 or 1996.)

In the fillum days I did not shoot with Canon, that was all with some vintage Exakta bodies. I also had a Nikon P&S (995) from 2001 to 20003. Canon made (by far) the best case for migrating to a DSLR (I could actually still use some of my old Exakta glass!), so:
2003-2005: 10D
2005-2012: 5D*
2012-2016: 6D*
2016-2022: 5D Mk IV*
2022-present: R5*
Also following the "*" means I still have it. The 10D I donated to a friend who needed a camera, the 5D and 6D my son has, and the 5D Mk IV is looking at me forlornly from the shelf, waiting for me to repair the intermittent top wheel.
