p.1 #1 · Is anyone else missing F mount gear?

It all started when i was going through my work from the last 5 to 6 years and critiquing it, I realized how my style have changed and how many more unnecessary images i shoot since i adopted Z system. Felt the output from my dslr days feel more organic and pleasing, especially the colors.

So i have recently sold a few Z gear on FM, Z8 and 85 1.2 were among them, and picked up a bunch of F mount primes (28, 58, 85 and 105 1.4 primes) and cameras (850, 700,200 and D3). Severe GAS issues, lol!

Recently took some pictures at a friend’s kid event with D850 and primes, though it was not easy to adapt back to DSLRs and had to unlearn a few habits, i loved the experience of looking through viewfinder to take pictures and am really happy with the colors, look and the files out of them.

Curious to see if anyone is going through a similar phase and your learnings and what you had to intentionally do to adapt back.

2 and a half years ago I built a little Nikon DSLR kit with a D750. At that time I wasn't a Z shooter, but actually was shooting Canon RF. I really liked the files out of the D750, and I enjoyed Nikon...moved me to pick up a Z5....and then within 2 months I had completely switched over to Nikon (though with the Z system). This experience was my first experience with Nikon cameras.

I documented my return to DSLR experience here: https://admiringlight.com/blog/revisiting-the-dslr-is-mirrorless-really-better/

I had been shooting mirrorless exclusively since about 2010, so it was nice to get back to that for a bit, but ultimately, I prefer the more accurate and precise AF, the brighter viewfinder indoors, and most of the creature comforts of mirrorless. I eventually sold that DSLR kit, minus a couple of the AI-S lenses, though I do have a small Canon 7D kit (and a 30D that was my second DSLR, rebought for $60), that I got on the very cheap for when I still feel like pulling out a DSLR. That's rare, but I sometimes do it for nostalgia's sake (Canon because my DSLR nostalgia is Canon based - I have no nostalgia for old Nikon bodies).

I've kept all my DSLRs and F-mount lenses, so if I ever feel the urge to go back, I can. However,... I am enjoying my Z8 and Z lenses a lot more, especially the Voigtlander manual focus lenses. Manually focusing with a DSLR was a 50/50 chance that I'd miss critical focus. I have the FTZ adapter, so I can use the F-mount lenses when I want. They're a lot more accurate on the Z8 than they ever were on my DSLRs, even AF fine-tuned, but some just can't quite resolve 45 megapixels very well. Their Z-mount equivalents are better in so many ways.

Yes, I do think I took a lot of really nice photos with my DSLRs, I liked the colors, but the Z8 colors are also really nice and I remember how many good shots I missed focus on due to the centric and limited AF modules. Focus and recompose is no fun either, especially with a moving subject. There is some nostalgia with DSLRs, but I haven't felt the need to pick them up since I got the Z8. Not really looking back.

The OP now has a nice collection of really good (by reputation) F mount lenses. I kept most all of my odd collection of Nikon and Zeiss manual focus lenses, and did keep a D800E in case I want to point a camera at the sun for eclipse shots.
As to shooting with a DSLR again? May I never have to eye-focus a SLR/DSLR in dim light again.
Added: I still miss focusing the SLR through the finder in bright sunlight, even though it isn't any faster than using focus mag on the Z cameras.

I rarely use my DSLRs and I have them going back to D100 through to D850 but F mount lens- I kept all mine, the FTZ can be clunky but for some I manual focus anyways, for instance my 105 2.8 micro, great lens I only manual focused it anyways, my small 300 pf- nothing like it for Z and it FTZs well, the 105 1.4 again F only although my 135 Plena Z does supplant it, my 500 pf is a space holder in case of mishap with my 600 Z, it is clunky with a FTZ2, but manual is just fine, my 50 mm 1.4 D, yes D, is awesome for IR mod Z6, my 50 mm F1.4 G I rarely use, my 180 mm ED 2.8 remains a great lens and is great for IR (IR is manual focus), my sigma art 20 mm and 14 mm remain super night lenses, those too I manual focus, and the 8 mm Sigma fisheye again I use manual and it too remains a great lens. The F zooms, those have been supplanted I still have them, but they remain in drawer. But the prime F glass, all keepers as far as I am concerned, and I have no attention of dumping them a big discount when they are very usable. The FTZ2 is pretty good with shorter lenses, clunky for long telephoto, in manual mode all are just great still. And I do have a 35 mm F1.4 thorium radioactive lens, a great lens of the 1970s, and there is nothing else like it made ever since- a 58 mm F1.2 noct remains on my list... again a vintage lens with nothing like it now. If they are still useful why sell them they will not bring in much money and better to keep using them.-

I have a pretty good array of Z lenses, 28-120, 14-24, 100-400, 400, 600, 50 1.8, 20 1.8, 28-300 awesome all in one travel, 135 Plena, among these the plena, 20 mm 1.8, the 400, are great in my opinion, the 100-400 is the swiss army knife of lenses so so useful.

I should note I got a F to M mount adapter for my new Leica M11 EV1, and I can use a 500 mm PF on a Leica M- which is novel....!

I sure don't miss the little F mount itself, but some focal lengths and entire lens classes are missing. The lack of any PC lenses, 200 micro, 70-200/4, 180-400/4, 200/2, 300/2.8, 500/4, etc. are annoying. All the Z fast prime and video lenses are useless for me. I don't miss the old Nikon DSLRs very much. The D500 was in a league of it's own and not replaced in the MILS era.

I never got out of F. I use the Z8 for my main digital body, but I still shoot a lot with film and DSLR's so my lens kit hasn't shifted away from F-mount. Aside from the 40 f/2 and CV 40 f/1.2, my Z8's main lenses are all F-mount.

For a main modern body, the Z8 has been a nice move from the D5/D500 combo (which I kept and occasionally use) and the D850 (which I sold), and I'm very happy with the F-mount lens kit I've got for it. But for everyday stuff, the Zf just never gets picked up over film or the occasional DSLR. I haven't taken the Zf out in probably a year.

I do like the Zf and some CV primes, but I just keep going back to my smaller F-mount lenses and an SLR or DSLR is simply a better host for those. For example, my creaky old D600 weighs the same as a Zf and FTZ, and the D600 gives me autofocus with AF glass, focus confirmation with manual glass, and small lenses stay small without an adapter.

Some days I think about picking up another D850 to basically be my F-mount Z8 because I do value having the native mount for a lot of my glass, but when I had one in the past I still preferred the D5/D500 combo, so I'm hesitant to go back

Good to know about the FTZ adapter potential issues with long tele photo. I am planning to buy a 200-500 f5.6 f lens and pair it with my z9 for some sports action. Debated a lot between it and 300 f4 pf lens but chose to go with 200-500 for its versatility in range.

The 500 pf is especially clunky in my use.... frustrating to use

I don't think I could possibly disagree more...but I'll try.
Not saying you're wrong...it's your usage...obviously your the only one who can determine that.
I am still about 50-50 Z and F. Using D850 for macro and landscape where I don't care about having a gazillion AF and control options. Z9 for birds and wildlife. I absolutely LOVE the 500PF on the Z9, even with the 14elll. It's so good I don't even give the 600PF a thought. In fact, I just got a 300 2.8 VRII (again🤣,) and I'm really excited about it. Nothing comes close that's anywhere near affordable. F stuff is a killer bargain currently. I don't even notice the adapter using any of my F lenses.
Eventually I will get a second Z body but only because I do want to be able to travel with one system sometimes. Probably a gripped Z7ll, unless the Z9ll comes out and a whole bunch of people determine the version 1 is now useless. I love those people!

I don't think F-mount offers much over Z except for used prices but....I do think that while I love the Z8, it doesn't feel as rugged as the D5 and D500. Not saying that it ISN'T as rugged, just that it doesn't have that solid feel, which I like. That being said, I do think a lot of F-mount appeal is because of a specific feeling it had like that. Optical viewfinder, specific build, etc.

I also think feeling is important. If you really are attached to the F mount, go with it! Honestly, while I have the Z8, I still take the D500 out from time to time and it's just as fun to shoot with. I just don't like the shutter sound though, and I vastly prefer silent shutter.

On the other hand, I think it's also a good idea not to get too attached to feeling. It's easier to get better IQ with the Z system with long lenses (no shutter shock, better VR with synchro VR, silent shutter), so there's no way I'd personally stick with the F mount.

I still have a D5 which gets less use now with many f lenses that I won’t sell.
For sports is still adapt my f mount longer lenses. For 70-200 or longer I don’t really notice the FTZ due to their larger size. I’ve always felt that the 300 2.8 vrii and the D5 are a perfect match.
I prefer the f mount primes on DSLR even though they work well adapted. Just a personal preference.

Mostly shooting a Z8 and a Z6II with a few Z lenses, loving the 50/1.8S which is super versatile, got the 14-24S which is a superbe piece of glass, the super versatile 24-120 and the kit 24-70, oh, the magnificent 85/1.2 85mm being my favorite focal length, I adapt some F glass on the Z bodies especially the 58G but I have to admit that while the Z bodies make it easier to nail exposure and focus there is a pleasure using an OVF which can’t be replicated, I still own and shoot, from time to time, a D800 and a D850, they do great with the 58G and the old 85/1.4D and just got a Sigma 24-35 I am very curious to test as I never seem to make it with 35 mm, but, yes, the handling, the battery duration and the OVF make shooting a D-SLR still a joy.

I’m curious if you’ve used the 85 1.4D in manual mode on a z body and how you like it. I took some amazing photos with that lens when I had it but didn’t love its AF accuracy on DSLR.

I've got a Z9, Z8 and Zf for wedding and portrait work. Recently found a local F5 SLR on FB Marketplace and picked that up. Came with a 50mm f1.4D as well. Excited to shoot with it.

I never bothered to try the 85D on a Z, manual focus at low f numbers doesn’t do it for me, I did a kind of a bread and butter comparison with the 85D on the D850 and the 85/1.2S on the Z8 and they both do very very well, I won’t say the S lens being that much better but of course it takes to test in different circumstances where I am sure new coatings do better but the D lens is still a very good reason, along with the 58G, to keep a D-SLR and focus accuracy wise I have to say that it does pretty well.

No such feelings here, I am very pleased with the images I am getting out of my Z8.

I did love my D5/D850 back in the days though and they can still take amazing images.

I have migrated most of my landscape work to the GFX-100II, but will have the change to use the Z8 for 2 challenging outings in the coming weeks for which the Fuji body and lenses are just too bulky. Back to my stitching days. Lenses will be the Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 APO Lanthar and Nikon 105mm f2.8 MC.

Cheers,
Bernard

For some reason, i never really connected with z8 but love my z9. Don’t know why though they both are literally same tech for the most part
