I really tried to like 50 1.8 and other 1.8 lenses but couldn’t. On the other hand, 50 1.2 never fails to impress me so its my fav lens except for the weight. But on z9, it feels just fine for me. I adapt 58 1.4 quite often on my z6iii.

Mostly shooting a Z8 and a Z6II with a few Z lenses, loving the 50/1.8S which is super versatile, got the 14-24S which is a superbe piece of glass, the super versatile 24-120 and the kit 24-70, oh, the magnificent 85/1.2 85mm being my favorite focal length, I adapt some F glass on the Z bodies especially the 58G but I have to admit that while the Z bodies make it easier to nail exposure and focus there is a pleasure using an OVF which can’t be replicated, I still own and shoot, from time to time, a D800 and a D850, they do great with the 58G and the old 85/1.4D and just got a Sigma 24-35 I am very curious to test as I never seem to make it with 35 mm, but, yes, the handling, the battery duration and the OVF make shooting a D-SLR still a joy....Show more →
I don't know what is "clunky" about FTZ with telephotos... I've been using the 300PF on my ZF w/ FTZ1 for about a month and it's awesome. Blazing fast autofocus, aperture stops down instantly, no issues.
If you're talking about when it comes to lens changes and throwing off the center of gravity/etc, yeah that is understood- but functionally, it's anything but clunky.
I wouldn't say I'm missing my F-mount gear. It's certainly not lost.
I sold my D700 probably 4 years ago at this point. I moved to Z bodies for digital for the future as I had very few AF lenses in F-mount and was looking forward to the improved AF accuracy with lenses like the 58/1.4 and overall improved weather resistance with mid level bodies/lenses. I have not personally found the FTZ I clunky with supertelephotos, but I am grateful for the FTZ II for my shorter lenses.
I still shoot a 500/4 E FL, 58/1.4 G routinely on my Z8. I still have my FE2 and F3 and small raft of MF Nikkors. No plans to let any of that go. Like some others I do hope that some of the gaps that exist in the F lineup eventually get closed by Nikon.
I sold my last f-mount body, a D850 with over 200k actuations, a few months ago to MPB and I wish I'd kept it. For things like studio portraits and headshots, it never let me down, and I just prefer the OVF in general. I'll probably pick up another one down the road. I just wish Nikon made a sharper 24-120 f4 f-mount but I've wondered how the sigma art 24-105 f4 is.
I was sad to part with my F-mount gold ring primes last year. Their designs were a lot more inspiring. Not a huge fan of the look and proportions of the Z equivalents but they get the job done. The 35mm f/1.4G was my favorite, looks and performance, and very rarely left my D750.
One thing I wish Nikon had done differently with Z-mount is make it a bit less wide, maybe more like L-mount.
Because Z-mount is so wide even small lenses like the Voigtländer APOs are quite wide in diameter and handling them is not as nice. And they also take up more space in the bag. F-mount primes - esp. manual focus and AF-D - are just so nice and compact in comparison..
I'm still using Nikon (D)SLRs in addition to Z-mount and will continue to do so because of that reason. And because I like using OVFs. And film
While I loved the D750 and still really enjoy the images I took with it years ago, I don't miss it. The Z cameras are a step forward and I love the output.
The D500 on the other hand was a camera I really enjoyed.....aside from coming home to so many images to cull.
As for the glass, well I don't miss f-mount glass because I still have all of my favourites and I won't be selling them anytime soon! The FTZ isn't ideal, but it's not a big deal either.
My first dslr's were all Nikon; D1X with buffer upgrades, D70s, D200, and D750. I amassed several decent Nikon lenses during that time. Ironically, I was never 100% happy with my D750 due to the color cast which was almost impossible to correct in post at the time, and the lack of being able to capture sharp details regardless of whatever lens I used.
When Nikon released the Z mount line, it released an adapter to fit my old F mount lenses. However, all my AF-D lenses were no longer supported for AF. I was disappointed with Nikon and sold all my Nikon gear (except for a few film bodies, my old D200 bodies and a few of my favorite lenses). Since then I've been shooting with Canon, Sony and OM System (micro four thirds).
Do I miss dslr's in general? Somewhat. Mostly for their ergonomics/feel, but definitely not for their output/performance.
i got back into Nikon some months ago mainly to shoot the f mount gems 28/1.4, 35/1.4, 58/1.4, 105/1.4 and 200/2. Went with a Z8. Best of both (Z and F) worlds. i have z zooms but those f mount primes have such a special look and character i dont see with the z primes.
I was out shooting today with a newly acquired 300VRII and all three tcs on a Z9...wow! If I wanted a Z 300 2.8, I would need Nikon to release one or an adapted Sony or Canon and a bank loan. This combo is insane! TC20elll is a 600 5.6 and you can't even tell it's on there.
I had a Z50 and a Z5 for a while and I really enjoyed the output I found the shooting experience lacking something. Today I'm shooting a D500, D750, and a D850. I can pickup top drawer glass for pennies on the dollar and have no plans to move back to mirrorless.
