p.1 #1 · Is the A7RIII still considered a good camera today or is it been obsolted by newer sensors and tech?

Just acquired a unused copy of this camera but was trying to catch up on where users on this forum think this camera sits in the overall scheme of all things Sony. I am still using Nikon mirrorless but am moving into a hybrid setup.

FYI I am a Nikon for life guy but this is the first Sony camera I have owned. I have respect for face detect detail of Sony cameras and the Sony G lenses. Mostly doing portrait work. Bought it for its combination of low light and high resolution capability at a decent price.

It's a fine camera. It's two generations/versions back. It might be easiest to go check some of the various "reviews" that were published when the A7Riv was released, then the A7Rv. They'll go into the details and often have a "What's Different?" or "What's New?" section The move to 61mp resulted in some changes to low light/low noise performance but how be a deal that was is pretty individual in impact, if any.

What do you shoot. It’s a great travel and landscape camera but if you shoot sports or birds, there are better choices. For the price of a used one, it really is a deal.

Most portraits, most interested in eye focus in low light. Looking for reliable AF in critical applications.

It’s a terrific camera. Its 42mp sensor is probably the sweet spot for general shooting. I still have mine even though I upgraded to the A7R5 when it came out. I still use it when I need two cameras. You’ll love it for portraits.

If you want reliable eye AF, the A75 or A7R5 would be a better choice. The A7r3 will struggle with low light eye focus.

So really, the question is how much better are the later bodies.
You have the A7RIII. Makes no sense not to try it.
Once you have an idea what, if anything, is lacking, time to ask about later bodies.

Well low light af is important. The Z cameras are not perfect by any means. I am hoping for a little bump here. And I do want to get the most out of the 3 E-mounts I have acquired. Will see I suppose. Not going up from here. Thx for reply...

I have 2 a7r3a'S and have NO interest in anything newer or fancier. It (they) do nearly everything I ask of them. It seems as though ALL cameras have some limitation or fault.

That said, I'm an amateur and generalist. You can see some photos I've posted here to see quality of the camera.

My wife, also an amateur, has 2 a7r5's. I have no interest in them. I love my a7r3a's!

Give your Sony a fair shot, and you may just like it.

ps: I used to be an ardent Canon guy. Now the only Canon piece I own is a lens adapter to Sony.

Good luck!

Rich

Most of my Sony shooting since 2018 has been portraits. I had the A7RIII, but sold it less than 6 months after buying. My issue was the eye detect AF point coverage does not cover vertical portrait shots where the subjects eyes are in the upper part of the frame. If I remember right the area of AF points coverage is about 62%. This style of photo, which I was using for most portraits, caused the camera to hunt back and forth in trying to get the eye detect to work (Portraits taken in the horizontal mode were usually not affected this way) I liked the camera, but this issue made it Very frustrating to use for me.

When I sold the A7RIII, I got a A7RIV and that camera has not only improved AF, but more AF points coverage at 74%, and my hunting issue went away. My 2nd body, the A7III, has the same AF system as the A7RIII and did not have this issue because its AF point coverage is about 93%.

I use my A7R III primarily for landscapes and in that regard I absolutely love it! If my interests changed, to say, sports or birds-in-flight, and eye-detect was critical I'd be looking at an A9 III.

I don't have any need for the larger files provided by the 7RV. As someone else already mentioned, the 42mp's are in the sweet spot for image size.

It's a great camera, I just changed mine due to its really huge shutter count, and because I had the opportunity to buy a a7r4 for a great price.

I have done 6 years shooting my kid on his bike, or skiing, or whatever. Sure Af is not the fastest by today's standart, but it is really good.

For me the third generation is the first really good cameras. Colours are easy to work with, evf is very good, eye af works really well even though it is a bit slow. ergonomics is really good.

I've had all the versions until my a7r4, I don't regret the a7 a7r or a7II. A7III or rIII are really good cameras for their price.

if you got it at a good price, a7r3 is definitely a great camera, 5 axis image stabilization, increased battery size, etc.
for the low light shooting, I cannot really say too much.
I own a7s and a7c2 and they are both great. I just do not expect that a7r3 would perform close to it, but you can get better images w/ the de-noise programs.

My a7R3 is my camera on a skiing holiday, for scenery with Tamron Adaptall SP zooms. Then In the evening With AF lenses.

Recently reading about the A75, i found an image showing the A75 was the second best sensor from Sony As it came about 5th, The A7R3 was third.

What were the criteria they were using to determine "best" or rankings? Kind of needs context.

As I recall when the A7Riv came along, there comments that it was "noisier." And the responses to that seemed to range from "too noisy" to use for some, to perhaps "inconsequential, measurable but of no impact in use." It's noisier but the impact seems likely certainly not enough to keep how many thousands from getting an A7Riv, A&CR or A7Rv which all use the same or pretty similar sensor.

Just use it. It'll be as good as the photographer.

It's a great camera. My only real gripe is the fact the screen doesn't tilt/flip. AF is pretty good and has been mentioned sometimes struggles a bit in lower light/low contrast situations. Some of my favorite images I've shot came on the A7Riii or R3a.

my advice is just go and shoot some portraits with the a7r3. i had the a7r2 and the auto focus was unreliable compared to the faultless a7iv, i own a portrait studio and shoot in a totally dark studio and project split projections that rap around the model. in 4 years the a7iv has not missed a shot in probably 5000 portraits. Just have fun with it and see how it goes, dont shoot to tight and too shallow DOF to start with and then you will find the sweet spot. i started with f8 with my m43 cameras down to f6.3 on the a7r2 and now i can shoot at f3.2 with 100% accurate focus on the a7iv.

The A7R III is my entry to the Sony ecosystem. I'm coming from Pentax, and all I can say is that AF on the A7R III is miles ahead of my K-1. That being said, the ergonomics on the Sony are not as good, but they are manageable once you spend (a lot of) time customizing the buttons.
I know the A7R III is now a bit old but it is still very capable

Uncompressed RAW of A7RIII (only lossless option available): about 80 MB.
Lossless compressed RAW of A7RV (the recommended format, you don't lose any IQ): about 80 MB! And you even have 60 instead of 42 MP!

The file size argument is not valid.
