p.3 #1 · Is the A7RIII still considered a good camera today or is it been obsolted by newer sensors and tech?
I am the OP. Question for anyone who can answer: Is the A7R3A still on Firmware 1.00? It appears to me it is. I bought the camera sold as a A7RIII and it came with Firmware 1.0. It was advertised as new and unused (without box or manual) so I am thinking need to update firmware. Tried to update and no luck. After closer examination of the plate on the bottom of the camera, it is a ILCE-7RM3A, which came out in 2021 and incorporated all previous updates I assume. I cannot find any firmware update for this camera but there are several ways to pull up firmware for the A7RIII. Camera is just fine with me, and like it so much I am ditching my Nikon setup. The product support page has no downloads for firmware updates for this model but just wondering. I guess they figured it had been perfected by 2021. Makes my deal look even better. Like the fact that this camera had zero clicks on it as my first Sony.

I find it odd, but it is still at 1.0.
I have two of these and keep checking.

Ive had every model of the "r" (except the newest one), and the A7r4 felt the best in hand, and the AF seemed a lot more reliable paired with the 200-600G, 100-400 and 70-200 2.8II. Comparing this to the A7r3 - which I enjoyed a lot.

my advice is just go and shoot some portraits with the a7r3. i had the a7r2 and the auto focus was unreliable compared to the faultless a7iv, i own a portrait studio and shoot in a totally dark studio and project split projections that rap around the model. in 4 years the a7iv has not missed a shot in probably 5000 portraits. Just have fun with it and see how it goes, dont shoot to tight and too shallow DOF to start with and then you will find the sweet spot. i started with f8 with my m43 cameras down to f6.3 on the a7r2 and now i can shoot at f3.2 with 100% accurate focus on the a7iv....Show more →
I believe that the IV is better as you say, but I am using fast lenses and pretty happy so far with the IIIA. I will probably upgrade at some point but letting the dust settle after my switchover from Nikon is now complete.
Just a few observations, the customization is coming along but I will have to get some more muscle memory on controls. Color control is a little tweaky but just need to set up some profiles in PP. One question was definitively been answered, the III (IIIA) was better AF than the Z7II from Nikon even though that camera was released over 2 years after the Sony. Kind of wish I had switched earlier than now given where I find myself. Better late than never I suppose.

After enjoying the A7rii for several years, I upgraded to the A7riii. The sensor is outstanding and it's low light performance is impressive. It's the best camera I ever owned and I have no urge to upgrade at all. I highly recommend it.
