Z 24-120 S
It is just to versatile and good. It is light enough to take anywhere and covers so many shooting scenarios.
I have really settled into what I ahoot and really feel like cycling/shifting lenses anymore from my kit. I do rotate my time lenses through the bag also and really like the 50/1.8S, 58/1.4G. If Nikon brings out a Z mount compact but high quality 105 (say the modern take on the 105/2.5) and a modern take on a 28 that is as good as the classic 28/2.8 AI-S or 28/2 but without pushing for excessive speed and size, those two would be joining the bag and never leaving also.
p.2 #3 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
For me its the 24-120 f/4 S. And if I don't feel like carrying a zoom, it's either the 35mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f1.8 (depending on if I'm indoors or outdoors).
p.2 #4 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
Unfortunately, I don't have one lens as my go to lens as I shoot a variety of subject matter, from birds, landscapes, cityscapes, etc. Therefore, I mix between super telephoto lenses and a set of other lenses depending on what I am shooting. If I am shooting birds and I take the Z 600 TC out with me, I may take it alone or with say the 100-400 or 70-200 f2.8 in support. If I am out shooting landscapes it is the 35 f1.2, 24-70 f2.8 II, 50 f1.2 or whatever. If I am just wandering around the city, it maybe all the f1.2 lenses and the Plena. However, if I had to just take one lens out, it would be either the 35 f1.2 or the 24-70 f28 II.

That doesn't exist for me in that form either.
My needs always depend on the photographic task, and mine are quite varied.
I do have clear favorites that I use very frequently because they simply deliver, like the Plena.
However, that's not a lens I would always have with me or that would never leave my bag.
It's simply too big, heavy, and conspicuous for that, even more so with the big hood attached.
It weighs as much as my Z6 and 35mm f/2 Apo Lanthar Z lens combined, but above all, it's just far too big to carry around all the time.
If you want to put it that way, that only really applies to my relatively small, compact manual focus lenses.
Either the Voigtlander 35/2 Apo Lanthar Z, or the Thypoch 28/1.4 Asph. Z are the closest I can come to describing my go-to lenses.
Lightweight, relatively compact, unobtrusive, yet fast and with outstanding optical qualities.
For me, go-to would always mean a compact, lightweight, yet optically extremely high-quality manual focus lens.
Since Nikon no longer produces such a lens, there is no true Nikon go-to lens for me.

Sad but true! I used to not even _have_ a bag, but rather a camera around my neck with a single lens mounted (usually a Nikkor 24/2 AiS). The modern trend to AMAZing optics that are (as someone said on another thread) "the size of a large jar of peanut butter" is not my cup of tea. Sure, my 24/2 had some issues wide-open (swirly bokeh, corner softness), but it was small (pretty much the same size as the f/2.8 lens), and delivered the goods. Looking at the latest Z-mount offerings, I'm not even remotely tempted.
p.2 #13 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
People say they'll never sell this or that, but then a newer/better version of the product is introduced, and the "never-leaving-the-bag" item is now out of the bag.
I have two lenses I love and others that I use when its more appropriate... the 24-120 f4 and the 400 f2.8TC. I can't imagine selling my 400mm f2.8TC, but if Nikon introduced a 24-120 f4 w/ non-telescoping zoom, I'd replace my current lens with that one.

Absolutely! I've have many dozens of lenses over nearly 50 years and most are only good for 5 years or so. I have 3-4 different setups depending on the country and location. It's not like there is any one bag I use, usually 3-4 main ones depending on location.
p.2 #15 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
My EDC bag has three slots. Two of them are entirely variable. Some days it's the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8, some days it's the 50/1.2 and Plena, some days it's the 24-120/4 and 105MC, some days it's the 35/1.4 and 85/1.2, etc.
But that third slot — it holds my least-used lens in terms of total frames, but the one lens which never, ever leaves the bag for a place on the shelf.
p.2 #17 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
I'm fairly new back to Nikon and still struggling a bit with the lens selection. I guess it would be the 24-120/4 in terms of a travel/walk around lens. The 50/1.8 S feels solid and produces nice output, but I don't "love" it. I honestly wish Nikon has some primes with the design style and aperture rings like the Sony 35/1.4 GM or 50/1.4&1.2 GM.
p.2 #18 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
When shooting portraits or fashion, I most often bring the Z 50mm f/1.2. When I carry a camera just in case and want to travel light, I usually take the Z 40mm f/2.
p.2 #19 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
I have too many different scenarios including paid vs personal, sports vs landscape, etc. For personal I would say the 24-120. When covering sports with longer lenses I may throw in the z 40 f2 or z 50 1.8 or maybe even the f mount 24-70 2.8 in case something unexpected happens requiring the smaller focal length. It often depends how much room I have left in whatever bag I’m hauling.
If I had to pick just one though it’s the 24-120.
p.2 #20 · What’s your ‘never-leaving-the-bag’ Nikon lens?
I have no such lens.
I have a working set of five prime lenses 24/35/58/105/180 and I take all kinds of subselections of this set with me. I may also substitute one lens of the working set with some of my other, much less used lenses. For example if I wanted to shoot action, I would definitely pick up my modern telezoom 70-200 with fast autofocus and image stabilization. Havent done that in a long while though.
