Isn't that interesting. I feel like I've gone through a similar change in taste as well. I even repurchased the RX1R II recently because I used to love the look of the lens, but now I'm not as impressed as I once was. It's still a great lens, but the rendering feels very bland. The focus transition almost has a Gaussian-like blur, and aside from the noticeable axial CA, the overall look is quite clean and corrected. For instance, I now prefer the rendering of the LLL 35/2 "8-Element" over the Sonnar 35/2.
I think that the SG-image 35mm f/2.2 AF actually seems much than the Sonnar....Show more →
I had the OG RX1 in 2013. And at that time, that draw was exotic because there was really nothing like it. But in the last 10 years, pretty much all the lenses emulate that ultra smooth bokeh look. The RX1 I think does it as well as any lens and at a smaller size with the gorgeous Zeiss color/contrast but the novelty of the draw has become so ubiquitous it’s a bit bland.
I started to move off the RX1 after shooting the Pentax 31/1.8 for a year pretty consistently in 2017. I then re-purchased an RX1 and I remember looking at the files and being the surprised at the lack of personality comparatively. Since then, I just keep leaning more in the personality direction 🤷 Despite owning a 35i from Sigma and GM 35/1.4, those lenses also bore me.
And like you, I actually purchased a RX1r2 about two months ago on account of its tiny size, great macro performance and one lens simplicity, but I just need a lot less perfection than that at this point. Sold it to a buddy.

Have you thought about the nokton 35/1.4 classic and maybe just avoiding under f2 except when going for something wild?
I'm just fishing for thoughts on it really because I'm close to picking it up and the price just seems a bit much for what it is but I do appreciate CV build quality.
I can't find used copies locally, there's a few in Japan but then it's an additional 20% and I'm not having great luck on ebay recently.

I do have a 35 lux pre-asph, which draws very similarly to the CV but a bit more nicely IMO. Plus, hoping for AF option. I will probably just end up using the TT artisans 40/2 as my main small auto focus option.

The real issues is I am just too picky.
The TTArtisan 40/2 is indeed great. It's the lens I chose after comparing the Sony-branded versions. If you are ok with 40mm, the new Voigtlander 40/2 Septon is also worth considering. I may actually get one myself as I like the way it renders. It reminds me a lot of the CV 35/2 Ultron in terms of both performance and drawing.

I will likely give this 35/2.2 AF lens at try...
I saw your review (thank you for that as always) of that lens and noted some classic qualities that I generally like in modern lenses. 40mm is not my favorite, but I can make do. Beggars can’t be choosers! After I see how the new Kasana 35/2 renders, I’ll know where I stand.
I had always hoped CV would port their 35/2 Ultron.
I see the optical flat on the front of the lens, but I don't see one at the rear of the lens (it was originally claimed it would have a flat on each side of the lens elements). See at 1:34

Man this lens on an S9 looks almost exactly like my old GF1+20mm combo. Love it. I think for that I could forgive some of the shortcomings (of both the lens and camera, hah).

And another...
He's claiming that it's weather-sealed. Well it does have a rubber gasket on the lens mount and the optical flat in front...I guess the focus-by-wire ring has enough grease in there to keep out rain...

It seems to not include the square metal "cowl" lens shade or the metal lens cap that goes over the shade. I don't see it for sale by itself either.

Are you sure? That would be odd!
I will wait until it shows up on Amazon.
I emailed SG-image asking whether the special lens hood and cap were included with purchase. There's nowhere in the product listing that mentions or evens shows the square lens hood.
