Perfect! This should answer a lot of questions for many of us, regarding the "subtle" differences of these lenses.

According to Light Lens Lab, the first 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical "11873" from pre-orders will be the Titanium version, and I've been told I'll receive a copy for review. I’ll start the review as soon as it arrives, comparing it with several other 35mm f/1.4 lenses, including Leica models. Since you also ordered the Titanium, we should receive ours around the same time. Feel free to share your own comparisons on my review thread to give them plenty of visibility.

Just preordered the titanium with Fred's discount code. Pretty excited. The titanium looks pretty sick on a black body. I wonder if LLL is actually incorporating a true double AA element or are they designing the optical formula to render the original AA look.

"original double-aspherical optical concept while bringing modern advancements in rendering precision, distortion control, and chromatic aberration reduction"

Some of the images shown on LLL site look full frame although it is not clear which if any are wide open, so it is difficult to discern light fall off that is quite high in some of the other F1.4 35 mm you will likely review. I guess I will find out when my lens arrives in December and with a lot more detail when you do you review, to look forward to.

For those curious, here are the specs of the original Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux AA:

• Production era: 1991–1994, fewer than 4,000 lenses made
• Also known as: Double Aspherical or AA version (with 2 aspherical elements)
• Lens mount: Leica M-bayonet
• Optical construction: 9 elements in 5 groups
• Aperture range: f/1.4 to f/16
• Closest focusing distance: 0.7 m / 2.3 ft
• Diaphragm: 10-blade
• Angle of view (diagonal): 64 degrees
• Filter size: E46
• Accessories: Hood 12587 or 12588
• Weight: 300 g / 10.58 oz
• Inscription: LEICA SUMMILUX-M 1:1.4/35 ASPHERICAL E46 3XXXXXX
• Designer: Walter Watz, 15 February 1991

By the way, the Light Lens Lab 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical "11873" in Titanium matches the original Leica’s weight at 300g, while the aluminum versions are slightly lighter at 278 grams.

The Titanium Special Edition also comes with two hoods: the Aluminum Black Paint 12587 Lens Hood and the Titanium E46 Lens Hood.

Just for the future readers, when the E-Bay listing is no longer available, the asking price is...

$795,000 USD.

*NOT A REGULAR ALUMINIUM BODY THAT WAS FINISHED IN SILVER PAINT
PROPER, UNIQUE, BRASS BODY DESIGN

REMARKABLE AND OUTSTANDING! PROBABLY THE GREATEST FIND AND MOST DESIRABLE LENS EVER IN THE LEICA SYSTEM.
THE 35MM AA IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE COLLECTABLE LENS ALONG WITH THE 50MM 1.2 NOCTILUX, BUT TO HAVE A UNIQUE SILVER CHROME FINISH LENS IS A HIGHLIGHT AND WILL BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF ANY LEICA COLLECT. EVEN THE LEICA MUSEUM!
THIS IS YOUR ONE AND ONLY CHANCE TO OWN THIS LENS. NO ONE WILL EVER HAVE THIS LENS, THERE ARE NO OTHER EXAMPLES, NO OTHER PROTOTYPE, UNIQUE AND TRULY THE ONE AND ONLY BRASS BODY SILVER CHROME 35MM F1.4 AA ASPHERICAL LENS.
AN INCREDIBLE AND REMARKABLE ITEM.

Mechanics 9.5+/10
-Focusing is smooth
-Aperture clicks are crisp

Optics 9.5+/10

I CAN NOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS LENS TRULY IS. THE 35MM 1.4 AA IS ALREADY A LEGENDARY LENS IN ITSELF. THIS LENS ORIGINALLY BELONGING TO A LEICA EXECUTIVE AND WAS NEVER TO BE PRODUCED OR SOLD. THIS IS A "ONE OF A KIND" LENS.

VALUE:
WITH THE PRICES CONTINUING TO RISE OF REGULAR PRODUCTION 35MM 1.4 AA, FROM 20 YEARS AGO AT $5000 NOW UP TO $30,000 FOR A CLEAN, COMPLETE EXAMPLE, AND STILL RISING.
SPECIAL EXAMPLES FETCH APPOX. X10 MARKET VALUE
IE: A SILVER 50MM 1.2 ( MORE THAN X20 EXAMPLES KNOWN ) YEARS AGO WHEN MARKET PRICE WAS $20,000-$25,000 FETCHED $200,000 FOR A "SPECIAL SILVER" AT AUCTION IN VIENNA. PRICES WOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER NOW.
NOW PRICES OF REGULAR EXAMPLE LENSES FOR A NOCTILUX IS $35,000-$40,000 AND BOXED EXAMPLES UP TO $50,000+. SUBSEQUENTLY, OWNER THAT I KNOW FOR "SILVER" NOCTILUX 50MM 1.2 ARE ASKING $400,000-$500,000 FOR THERE RARE SILVER CHROME EXAMPLES....BUT THERE ARE UP TO 20 EXAMPLES PRODUCED,..SOME SOURCES SAY EVEN MORE!
SO REGULAR EXAMPLE OF A 35MM 1.4 AA BEING $25,000, SUBSEQUENT MULTIPLE OF THAT FOR A "SPECIAL" EXAMPLE IS $250,000. BUT THERE ARE NOT X5 OR X10 OR X20 EXAMPLES OF THIS "SILVER CHROME" EXAMPLE.
THERE IS ONLY ONE. X1

THERE ARE OTHER EXAMPLES OF SPECIAL LENSES IN MULTIPLE PRODUCTION SUCH AS THE ELCAN 90MM F1 WHICH EASILY FETCH OVER $100,000 AND THERE ARE X8 EXAMPLES.

AS WELL AS RECENTLY A TRI ELMAR 28-35-50-75MM THAT SOLD AT AUCTION FOR 240,000 EURO = CLOSE TO $300,000 USD$
* A REGULAR TRI ELMAR 28-35-50MM IS $3500 MARKET PRICE AND TO ADD THE 75MM = ADDING THE RARE 1.5X M CONVERTER ( WHICH I HAVE SOLD AND MANY HAVE SOLD IN THE MARKET *20+ EXAMPLES ) FOR $25,000 WITH PROPER CAPS
TOTAL $28,500.
AGAIN X10 OF THE MULTIPE $285,000+ BUT THERE ARE X3 EXAMPLE! X3...NOT X1
WHAT WOULD THEP PRICE BE OF THE TRI ELMAR IF THERE WAS ONLY X1
AS WELL THE TRI ELMAR BEING FAR LESS DESIRABLE OVER A 35MM 1.4 AA

THERE ARE NO OTHERS, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER AND THIS IS TRULY UNIQUE, SPECIAL, ONE AND ONLY, BEST OF THE BEST, EXAMPLE.

FOR VALUE, THIS IS ACTUALLY FAIR. SOME WOULD SAY IT IS FAR ABOVE AND BEYOND BUT COMPARED TO OTHER RESULTS, LESSER LENSES, AND MANY MORE MULTIPLES, THIS IS ACTUALLY A FAIR PRICE.

IF EACH WERE ONLY X1, WHAT WOULD THE PRICE BE...

x20+ CHROME NOCTILUX AT $400,000+
x10 ELCAN 90MM F1 COMPLETE AT $100,000
x200 ELCAN 66MM AT $100,000
x3 TRI ELMAR 28/35/50/75 AT $300,000

UNIQUE X1 ONLY...
x1 CHROME SUMMILUX-M 35MM 1.4 AA BRASS BODY $...,...

IMPORTANCE:

I CAN NOT STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS LENS. THIS IS NOT A REGULAR LENS IN OF ITSELF. THE 35MM 1.4 AA WAS REVOLUTIONARY AT THE TIME. IT IS CONSIDERED FOR MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS AS "THE PERFECT" FOCAL LENGTH AND MUCH MORE "TRUE" TO THE LEICA SYSTEM OVER ALL OTHER LENSES. THE 35MM 1.4 IS STILL DESIRED ABOVE ALL FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC NEEDS.

TO HAVE A UNIQUE PIECE FOR SUCH A SPECTACULAR LENS IS THAT MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. MUCH MORE DESIRABLE AND IT IS NOT THE VALUE OF MONEY BUT MORE OF A MARK IN HISTORY THAT DESERVED TO ONLY HAVE BEEN DONE ONCE AND PRONOUNCED AS THE GREATEST LENS IN LEICA HISTORY

Thanks for all the sample shots!
That’s looking pretty good — a lot less glow than I was expecting. I’m really curious to see how much microcontrast (and thus perceived sharpness) will make the subjects pop on a digital sensor.

Would you describe the focus ring as buttery smooth, or more on the firm side? The one on the Leica pre-FLE was incredibly smooth without feeling loose.

I was doing some more research on the original AA. It was suppose to be the most technically advanced 35mm at that time. It’s selling points were great edge to edge sharpness and flare control while maintaining a light weight. 35 FLE and APO are both technically better now. The character wasn’t even part of the selling point.

I think lenses from the past weren't designed with "character" in mind the way we talk about it today. Back then, designers aimed for the best IQ they could achieve within the limits of their technology, lens size, and budget. Even the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux pre-asph from the 60s was built for top performance wide open, yet by today's standards its imperfections now register as character.

When Leica introduced the 35mm f/1.4 AA, they went all in with two aspherical elements, a major innovation at the time, and achieved the best optical performance in a 35mm M lens of that era. The irony is that when you look at its rendering today, there's still plenty of character (outlining, a bit of swirl, and a hint of glow) that you won't find in Leica's modern designs, ultra-corrected 35s.

That is exactly what draws many to this lens.. It can reproduce images that feel close to the OG from that time. We all appreciate perfection, but sometimes the imperfect look is far more interesting than chasing technical excellence.

A Leica manager once told me that up until a few years ago, Leica’s lens design philosophy focused almost entirely on wide-open performance in the plane of focus — meaning where the image is actually sharp.
The rendering of out-of-focus areas — the quality of the blur, the shape of the highlights, all the bokeh characteristics — simply wasn’t a priority at all. (Hence the ugly ninja-star bokeh highlights.)

This has changed noticeably in recent years, which you can also see in the increased number of aperture blades.

___

I’m really curious about the upcoming LLL APO. But I do expect the price to land somewhere above 2k.
