But why shouldn’t a fully manual M lens work on every M body?
Apart from the convertibles, where the shutter curtain can be touched on some Ms if the rear section is inserted slightly misaligned.
It’s still just another 35mm lens in M mount, isn’t it?
I think what they meant is that Leica cannot apply a 6-bit code to this lens, and that automatic lens profile correction may not be available on the M8, while it is supported starting with the M9. There is nothing that prevents this lens from being physically compatible with all M bodies.
That would make sense since some wide angles had the corner issues mentioned with the M8 even with 6 bit profile. It'd look bad if one of their flagship performance models didn't translate well for digital so it was better to tell customers not to use it at all until a physical fix like the M9 sensor existed.
I vaguely remember on the M11 P the AA looked good throughout but can't remember the bokeh clarity. Hopefully by early next year we'll have the original AA owners upload some direct comparisons.
Looks like the LLL 35/1.4 AA will arrive today! As for extra fees, DHL only charged me $32.53. Hopefully it's similar for everyone else who ordered one.

Fred- great news! Happy you are getting your copy and very much look forward to your formal review as I wait for my Ti copy to arrive.
I hope anyone who receives this lens and also owns the Leica 35mm Summilux FLE 1 or 2 will shoot some comparison photos between the 2 lenses, especially at 1.4 and 2, at portrait distances. and with backlight or OOF point sources in the BG even better. Just putting it out there, thanks.
I'll start the review in a couple of days since I'm heading on a short trip to South Carolina to visit my in-laws. I will bring the LLL 35mm f/1.4 AA with me and do some testing there.
One bit of good news: this copy is perfectly aligned with the rangefinder!
For now, here it is side by side with the Leica 35mm f/1.4 FLE, and also mounted on the M10-P with its titanium UV filter:

Dang! You show us that beautiful lens...and then you make us wait? How cruel!
Would it be too much to ask for a couple quick images that might give us an idea about rendering?
Alright, you win. I went outside and grabbed a few shots with the Light Lens Lab Releases 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical "11873". It's really hazy and foggy tonight, but I shot with my M10-R and the lens is perfectly aligned.
Straight out of the camera using Adobe Standard profile:
No in-camera profile applied

Small point of interest - the fonts aren't exactly the same on some characters ("feet," for example and the infinity symbol).
Presuming that Leica uses a custom font derived from Microgramma...I wonder if it's something they have trademarked and thusly cannot be copied without risk of legal engagement. Or, could be something else all together...

That is some serious fog!
Thanks for posting these.
Interesting and good to see that the shape of out-of-focus highlights seems to be accurate to the 11873 (at least from the few online examples). For comparison, check out page 79, post 13 on the LLL Images thread. This is cool - as the shape of out-of-focus highlights from the 11874 (and onward) is different from this.
Also, notably less bokeh outlining than I expected (the Leica 11873 shows a lot of bokeh outlining), but that's maybe a function of the fog diffusing the light a bit.

Almost looks like you are shooting with the Steel Rim with so much fog.

Indeed, but that's a natural effect. The fog definitely diffused the light, so it's not wise to draw any conclusions about the rendering from those shots. When I start the review, I will post plenty of samples taken under more optimal lighting conditions.
What I've learned from these samples is that my lens focus calibration is spot on, the lens is a pleasure to use with no focus play, and it is capable of capturing fine detail even off axis.

Glad to hear you have a Leica 35 Summilux FLE. I very much hope you will shoot some comparison photos with the 2 lenses, particurlarly at 1.4 and 2. And hopefully with some OOF point sources.
The question is: if you owned the Leica FLE would you purchase the LLL AA? Look forward to hearing and seeing. Thanks.

There are some good comparisons 35mm FLE v.1 with the original 35mm AA. The LLL is also interesting (it's not an exact copy).
Thanks for sharing this review.I do follow Jimmy Cheng.. so have seen this and it's one of the more useful comparisons so far. I look forward to upcoming reports from Fred, Keith Wee, Kevin Fickling, Matt Osborne, etc.
