p.1 #1 · Z6III Firmware 2.00 now available

It has a whole host of changes, many of which are catch-up features to match releases for other cameras:

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/571.html

Probably easier to read the changes at the link above, but copy and paste here as well:

■ Still Photography
• Added [Birds] to [AF/MF subject detection options] in the photo shooting menu.
• The maximum shooting display zoom ratio is now 400%.
• Added [Auto capture] to the photo shooting menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will take photographs automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. Note that [Distance] is available with NIKKOR Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses. The [FX (36Χ24)] and [DX (24Χ16)] image areas are available with auto capture.
• Added a [C15] high-speed frame capture + release mode option.
• The image quality for high-speed frame capture + can now be set separately from other release modes.
• [Options] has been added under [Focus shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [Pixel shift shooting] to be used together with focus shift shooting.
• [Options] has been added under [Pixel shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [AE bracketing] to be used together with pixel shift shooting. [Starting storage folder] has also been added.
• [Pixel shift shooting] options can now be set when the self-timer mode is selected.
• The Profoto A10’s continuous LED light can now be used as an AF-assist illuminator.
Note: The firmware update is needed for Profoto A10. See Profoto’s corporate website for details.

■ Video Recording
• Added [Birds] to [AF/MF subject detection options] > [Subject detection] in the video recording menu.
• The maximum shooting display zoom ratio is now 400%.
• Added [Auto capture] to the video recording menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will record video automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. Note that [Distance] is available with NIKKOR Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses. The [FX] and [DX] image areas are available with auto capture.
• The color of the in-focus AF-area brackets shown on the shooting display when Hi-Res Zoom is enabled has been changed.
• Hi-Res Zoom operations can now be performed using the sub-selector.
• Selecting [ON] for [Hi-Res Zoom] in the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU] now displays a focus point on the detected subject in the shooting display.
• Added a function to include file names used in the camera when recording videos to an external recorder that supports file name transmission via HDMI. The following Atomos external recorders support this function (as of August 2025).
- Ninja V *
- Ninja V+ *
- Ninja (2023 models)
- Ninja Ultra
- Shogun (2023 models)
- Shogun Ultra
- Shogun Connect *
* Some recorders may require an ATOMOS OS upgrade or paid activation of the recorder. Contact ATOMOS for details.

■ Playback
• Added [Loop playback] in the playback “i” menu.
• Added [Playback speed] in the video playback “i” menu.
• Added [Record camera orientation] in the playback menu.
• Added [Auto series playback options] to [Series playback] in the playback menu.
• Made changes to the [Select for upload to computer] and [Select for upload (FTP)] items in the playback “i” menu and added [Select for priority upload to computer] and [Select for priority upload (FTP)].
• Added [Date] to [Filtered playback criteria] in playback menu and playback “i” menu.
• Added [Customize retouch options] to [Retouch] in the playback “i” menu.
• Added [Auto-rotate during playback] to the playback menu.

■ Controls
• Added support for the Nikon Authenticity Service.
* The Nikon Authenticity Service enhances content credibility by using provenance information and other data in accordance with the C2PA standards.
* You must register with Nikon Imaging Cloud and apply for use of the service.
* The Nikon Authenticity Service may not be available in some countries and regions.

Oh thank god. Honestly, while I’m so glad to have bird AF, detailed adapted lens info, and all the other improvements, the biggest quality of life upgrade is the thicker focus box. I’ve been dying for this update to finally bring it to the Z6 III.

Busy summer for Nikon's engineers!

Who will be the first to complain about the lack of Z9 firmware update?

Cheers,
Bernard

It's not in the firmware 2.0 change list but Recall Shooting Functions was added as well. See page 54-55 of the firmware 2.0 supplement manual:

Insane. This was for my uses the only thing missing from the shooting experience, and I’d accepted they were probably not going to address it, possibly ever. Hot damn.

I don’t see it on the list but “Cycle AF Mode” was apparently added to the custom button options. My Z8 does it and I miss it on the Z6III.

I have a wedding to shoot Friday so I’m probably not going to update until after that.

I do wish they would add the ability to cycle subject detection on and off via a custom button. That’s one of the few things that would improve my event shooting days.

Didn’t they just add recall? Should be able to do it now via that.

Welp I know what I'll be doing when I get home from work. Bird AF is super appreciated but some of these other additions will be nice quality of life changes as well.

You can, but since there is only one of the recall settings, you have to make a judicious choice how to use that. (or did nikon implement one recall setting for each U setting? if so that would be great and beat the Z8/Z9)

A dedicated subject detection toggle and subject type cycle should be on Nikon's next priority to implement across the lineup. They are the only one of big three to not have these features.

Just checked and they implemented unique recall settings for each U position. Fantastic!

Overall I agree with you. I personally have little interest in most of the recall settings for my day-to-day shooting, so burning a custom function just for subject detection on and off would be a win for me.

I 100% would burn a button for subject detection toggling.

Has anyone gotten the C2PA to actually show credentials in image?

I registered the camera, downloaded the certificate and credentials are on. But if upload an image taken after this is enabled to the C2PA verify tool it shows no credential on the image.

I tested it and it doesn't seem to be working. I was able to request and install a certificate and turn on the feature. When I take a photo it shows an icon during playback that the photo has credentials. But when I upload the photo to CAI's verify tool it reports no credentials found.

The Z9 users who rightfully should be the first to have the latest features on their flagship cameras. And yet...
