p.1 #1 · Fujifilm Price Increase Details

Link: https://www.getdpi.com/forum/index.php?threads/fujifilm-price-increase-august-1.77655/

Fujifilm has been unusually silent since the beginning of the US tariff "wars." Their only action (until recently) was suspending orders for bodies like the GFX100RF, the x100vi, and T-M5 [sic].

However, we recently received a price list from Fujifilm showing increases of up to 11% effective August 1st. After this date, Fujifilm will not honor open orders at the previous pricing.

Some examples of what's to come are the GFX100RF increasing by 10%, the GFX100 II by 11%, and most GF Lenses by 7-9%.

For CI, new GFX bodies have been on order for months, and GFX100RFs are elusive. Most GF lenses have been available when we've ordered, and we've stocked up on what we could before they go up.

Unfortunately, once the increase takes effect, all dealers are obligated to adjust their prices accordingly, regardless of whether stock was ordered at the old pricing or not.

So, all American buyers will be paying an additional 11% import tax on Fujifilm gear... on top of any sales tax that they already pay.

Just swell...

I didn't vote for that, but here we all are. I can't blame the manufacturers or dealers. 10% to 11% seems about right when we'll probably end up with 25% Japanese goods tariffs. Edit... looks like TACO announced 15% today... who knows what tomorrow will be.

I (and probably many of us here) am comfortable enough financially to grudgingly absorb this tax, but not well-off enough to benefit from the new income tax cuts (in fact, they also will hurt me). I feel for the people paying extra for basic items like clothing, appliances, and strollers.

Silly you... Americans don't pay the tariffs, the exporter does. (/s, as if it needs to be declared as such)

Transfer of wealth from me to the exporter to the U.S. government

I'd be willing to pay a lot more if they took away income taxes!

... and from there to the corporations and people wealthy enough to have specific tax law written in their favor.

I remember a time when people, well those who had the cash, would get on a flight from London to NY, spend a few days there, buy a Macbook, designer clothes and whatever else, come back and would have saved enough to pay for the trip itself and add some. That was a combination of exchange rates, VAT and pricing differences.

Maybe the time has come to do this the other way around. Come to Europe, buy some Japanese, German or Swedish cameras, get a holiday out of it too!

Been thinking about a used GFX 100 II for the past few weeks. Don’t tell the used market this news! 😅

Obviously this sucks…as do the culprits behind this situation (it must always be said).

While used will remain less costly than new, keep in mind that as the price of new goes up due to tariffs the market for used cameras will also see price increases.

Every manufacturer is free to set whatever they wish price tags onto their good and services, but they are going to get no more than the consumer is willing to pay for such good and services

They are “free to set whatever they wish price tags onto their good and services,” but they must now add to their calculations the amount that US importers must pay the US government to bring the products into the country, and then they must pass on some or all of that import tax to the consumers.

If their list price for a product was $1000 and they don’t change it, they eat the import tax themselves… which they clearly cannot do the size of the tax diminishes their profit to to zero or less. So they change the list price to something higher to cover the addition import tax costs.

They are trying all kinds of interesting strategies to deal with this and the unknowns of what the tariffs will actually be. (That keeps changing.) Some are simply setting prices high enough that they can cover what they regard as the likely tariffs. Others are setting the prices a little lower than that but much higher than they were and expecting to lose some profits for a while. (I had a discussion recently with someone from Apple about this, and he said that they have calculated a limited time frame over which this can work, but it can’t go on indefinitely.)

We’re also seeing a new and sometimes-confusing pricing game. The company raises the prices as described above. Then if tariffs don’t materialize right away the y announce a “dollars off” sale. but the sale price is now higher than the previous list price.

Don’t forget that this doesn’t just affect camera gear. It affects virtually every product category we purchase. And it doesn’t just affect the purchase itself. As buyers pull back due to higher prices, the American vendors and stores suffer. Shippers lose money as fewer products are shipped. State governments and all that they support (police, fire, education, etc.) will lose tax income and have to cut back, putting more people out of work. Your costs to insure your photography gear will go up. Prices for used products will rise.

Swell, huh?

The number of people who believe that the exporting countries will pay for tariffs is the same as the number that voted for the current guy in WH. Price increases will be blamed on the previous administration. It seems you can fool a lot of people all of the time.

I checked last night and B&H still lists the X-T5 at the same price as before. It will be interesting to see what happens come 8/1.

The current administration knows what they are doing -- they're making America great again by encouraging us to buy camera gear from the multitude of American camera gear manufacturers, thereby increasing American jobs.

Oh, wait. Nevermind.
