No hunting or stuttering. It does however keep the aperture at F2 during the entire tracking process, and not only to initially acquire AF. I would probably prefer it to stop down right after the initial focus, so the lens is already stopped down again when i take the shot.
In AF-S it doesn't open up to F2, it keeps the aperture as you set it, up to F5.6. So if you shoot in AF-S at F8, it will open up to F5.6, acquire focus and stop down to F8.
This is an interesting topic, as it works like this on the A7iv, for example. If you select an aperture of 5.6, for example, in AF-S mode, the aperture will open briefly to focus and then close again after focusing. In AF-C mode, however, the aperture remains closed the entire time, at 5.6 in the above example.
I haven't noticed this until now because I almost only shoot in AF-C mode.

All 3 settings don't change any behavior during focusing. I guess this is due to the fact, that I am already in focus when I press the shutter button, but it still has to stop down to my setting, which is where the delay is from.
Btw I want to emphasize that this is a minor delay, it's gonna be subjective if it will bother some people or not I guess.

About the shutter lag - what if you have this setting: Focus> AF/MF>Priority Set in both AFS/C set to Release?

Appreciate the hands-on report from someone who actually purchased the camera. The YouTube reports about AF have been all over the map. I suspect some of that is due to a lack of adequate time to properly test the camera.
I preordered the camera, but I'm probably not in the first batch, I waited 2 days before taking the plunge.

In the end I imagine the rx1riii will do as well as previous models for roughly the same reasons. For a going out to dinner travel camera I have an rx100iii which is good enough for me.

Maybe it's just in my area (Austria), but the demand unsurprisingly does not seem to be very high due to the price (Or they received that many units). The camera is available in every single camera store here. Don't need a preorder at all. So pretty sure you will get yours soon even after ordering later.
So far I am very happy with AF, obviously haven't tested enough to make a conclusion, but no misses and tracking works fine. Tested a bit in low light as well and worked great as well. Will bring it along some events to test more soon.

What is your (Focus)→[AF/MF]→[Aperture Drive in AF] setting? Assuming the setting exists on your body, setting this to "silent" should get rid of any focus changes during AF-C. On my A1II setting this to standard is enough, but maybe they changed the default behaviour.
Seems mapcamera’s RX1R III pre-tax price is $3650 in Japan. A travel to Japan almost pays itself…
I guess we should all thank Trump.
It's my understanding that Japanese Sony cameras do not have an option to switch languages (such as English). If this has changed in recent years, please let us know, as I would gladly book a flight to Japan for vacation and a shopping trip.

Unfortunately this setting does not exist on this camera:

"Sony RX1R III Pre-Orders Are Strong Despite High Asking Price
The online discourse surrounding the Sony RX1R III has been up and down. When Sony surprise announced it 10 days ago, the Internet’s immediate response was jubilant. But then, not long after, the asking price of $5,100 sank in. The whiplash was hard and fast, leading many to believe it wasn’t going to sell well. That doesn’t appear to be the case at all...
In multiple regions, the Sony RX1R III pre-order popularity appears to be high — at least above average. Starting in Japan, where manufacturers are obligated to tell consumers if there is a possible disruption to shipping schedules, Sony has said that the camera is more popular than the number of cameras it allocated for the region."

"Shipped and sold by Focus Camera LLC"
I wouldn't buy anything from Focus Camera after my last experience with them. I ordered a simple, new Sony Z battery (via Amazon). The first one they sent, while in Sony packaging, was some third party brand I'd never heard of and was very well used. Faded finish and scratches everywhere.
So I exchanged it for another one. The second battery they sent was, at least, a Sony battery, but it, too, was obviously well used. The Sony hologram logo was so dirty and scratched, it wasn't even legible. I did not give them a third chance. Returned it for a refund.
I attribute the experience to them accepting returns and shelving the return for resale without verifying the contents. However, twice in a row? What are the odds of that?

This is Sony reporting this, so I’ll take it with a grain of salt. Even if true — they’re manipulating demand by having few units produced — therefore generating a backlog from the initial wave of orders from those where “I’ve got to have it, no matter the cost” crowd — or money is no object…let’s see where demand stands a year from now or less once the initial surge subsides. I know from working the corporate world metrics reporting that numbers can be fudged by showing only certain perspectives. I’d want to see what the demand is really like by showing me the production capacity vs production volume vs orders. And then I’d want to pivot that data and compare against other market factors (like competition for the same or similar camera class)

It's still the case that Japan market Sony cameras only have Japanese UI language available. Also, this camera is not going to be available in physical stores in Japan for a while since the initial launch allocations for Japan were sold out in ~3 hours and there must be a lot of backorders in the queue, so anything that comes in for the next couple of months will be used to fulfill existing orders and reservations.
The camera does seem to have raised a lot of interest in Japan and the available volumes are probably fairly limited. Also, here the GFX100RF (around 750K yen) and Leica Q43 (1.065 million yen) are considerably more expensive than this one.

Wait, now you’re telling me I have to fight for one? 😅 I haven’t bought a new camera or lens in four years! I'm seriously overdue, and super excited to finally get this one. Fingers crossed it arrives before my trip!

Does it really matter? It's just a camera....whether it's popular or unpopular, or somewhere in between.
At the end of the day, Sony will know all that data. Arguably it's most useful for them anyway.
It clearly matters to Sony….why in the world wouldn’t performance metrics matter to any business (for any product produced —camera or any other widget). Anyway, I didn’t bring it up, Sony did, for a reason.
