It clearly matters to Sony….why in the world wouldn’t performance metrics matter to any business (for any product produced —camera or any other widget). Anyway, I didn’t bring it up, Sony did, for a reason.

So we agree.

Just heard in this video the rear lens element is attached to the sensor. Til now I had always thought the lens was micro adjusted to be extremely close to the sensor but not actually attached. Seems like this might explain some of the tradeoff limitations as mentioned in this video.

Does it really matter? It's just a camera....whether it's popular or unpopular, or somewhere in between.

At the end of the day, Sony will know all that data. Arguably it's most useful for them anyway.

Does it really matter? I think it does. We all know what happens to a new camera that does not sell/deemed "unpopular" e.g., ZX1.

I think the Sony RX1RIII is an important arguably ten-years-in-the-making camera release for both Sony, the camera industry and of course for those consumers in this industry that prioritize size and weight.

The State and Future of the small compact full frame camera market--Is this a potential new area for growth?

Clearly manufacturers are in their own way/approach responding to the market's desire for smaller/compact light weight but also high quality, full frame camera systems. For example: Sigma FP/FL-L, Sony A7C/II/R, Panasonic S9, Sigma BF and now Sony's re-entry into this space with their new RX1RIII.

The fact that Sony reentered this market after so many years with the RX1RIII fixed lens might give us an interesting signal about this specific market segment. Of course sales success/popularity is a very important factor for what comes or doesn't come next.

i can confirm from disassembling the camera that rear element of the lens is attached to the frame at the same point as the sensor. it is really more like the camera is built around the lens and then the sensor is attached to the back of the lens.

Thank you. For me fascinating and as I wrote answers some questions about the new specs.

It's still the case that Japan market Sony cameras only have Japanese UI language available.

A nice side gig/service might be to provide translations of the Japanese menus to those who are able to purchase the camera in Japan.

This was an interesting video for me. The attachment of the lens/sensor certainly explains many of the trade offs. From the sensor marking on top of the camera it’s clear there is very little space left to the rear of the camera which explains the lack of tilting screen, the IBIS and a regular shutter.

I agree with Tony that the 50mp sensor from the a1 would have been a superior choice, the faster read-out would have negated the need for any mechanical shutter. It might also have reduced the impact of the lens limitations that were highlighted.

I’m guessing Sony went with the 60mp sensor to crank up the specs, but I think that sometimes less is more…

There's an app that allows you to override the built-in language on A7 series cameras. I don't remember now, but I think it also works with other Sony bodies...

So down the road dust on the sensor should not be an issue?

I think designing a lens requires balancing many factors, correct spherical aberration, Coma, distortion, field curvature, optimize for sharpness etc. All of these corrections will also affect how the overall image look.

When famous Nikon lens designer Sato Haruo is designing 58 f1.4 lens for Nikon, he applied 3D HiFi concept (interview can be found here https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56410963)

I think in general, image from 58 f1.4 still looks rather special even by today's standards https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-nikon-af-s-58mm-1-4g-better-than-its-reputation/

no, all previous rx1 versions also had the lens attached to sensor, but there were still plenty of reports of dust issues.

the connection is a metal ring around the outside of the rear element screwed into the metal plate which the sensor is attached to. the rear (flat) surface of the rear element projects into the space occupied by the sensor coming right up to the cover glass on the sensor (presumably without touching). in previous versions there were no gaskets on this ring where the sensor and lens attach, so dust could get in (though certainly not easily), i'm guessing there still aren't on the new ones. also, as someone else mentioned dust can come from inside the lens not just outside the camera and given the rear element design dust on the front of the rear element might be visible like sensor dust.

interestingly, this new version actually has the sensor marking location further from the back of the camera than the two earlier versions and the lens sticks out more by a corresponding amount. presumably this is because of greater heat dissipation needs of either the sensor or other chips on the back.

Probably wanted to keep up the megapixel count in crop mode and I’m sure they wanted to compete on this with the Q3.

I’m guessing Sony went

A 10mp difference is not really that much (actual resolution difference likely unmeasurable in the real world with this lens) and would not matter to the more knowledgeable user of an RX1. This spec difference would be more important to a less informed user. Unless there is a technical reason, my guess is it's more about cost as the 50mp faster read-out sensor of the A1 is more costly than the widely available 60mp sensor.

Maybe not using the 50MP sensor might have something to do with it being a stacked sensor?

Perhaps it would require more processing power and drain the battery even faster, produce more heat and use an entirely larger board, etc. Looking at images of the chip sets for the 60mp sensor and the A1, it appears that the A1 uses dual Bionx XR processors whereas the 60mp based cameras use one. Just a guess.

With each review I get more excited to receive my preorder. This is exactly the camera I hoped (but never expected) Sony to make.
