Did anyone notice that the dimensions are a bit deeper? It went from 72mm to 87.5mm. Some of that may be the viewfinder sticking out the back, but it also appears the lens sticks out a bit further from the body than in the RX1R II.
That is probably with the evf sticking out. The weight is similar too despite the mkiii using a bigger battery, so is the focus distance in both macro and normal mode. I think it is the same lens.

The Rx1 problem is the body size, too small. Unlike GFX100RF hard to handheld below 1/100 because the lightness, small grip area, and front heavy lens.
Also I've never convienced o this lens need more than 24-33MP.
And finlally the deal breaker is the fixed screen. It's a painfull step back fron Sony.
The only update feature is the AI Sony AF, that I'd like in my GFX100R.

Some significant limitations considering the price...
- No IBIS (although understandable given the price).
- No CFExpress support (SD cards are painfully slow given the file size at 61MP).
- No focus point selector/joy stick.
- Low resolution EVF.
- Fixed LCD.
- Max of 5 FPS burst rate.
Seems like a cool camera, but I would not be able to justify accepting those downsides for over $5K. Still, really nice to see Sony update this product and bring some competition for the X100VI.
p.4 #6 · Official: Sony RX1R III Digital Camera announced!
One more thing on the IBIS front: I find the "crude" IBIS on the GRIII really useful and can shoot static subjects at 1 second exposures. Of course, if Sony put in a 3-axis four-stop-ish IBIS into a $5000+ update after ten years, people would be up in arms but expectations are different for the griii due to size and price.
Thinking about the price of the rx1rii, inflation, tariffs etc, maybe the price doesn't seem as out of line after the initial knee jerk reaction. But it does seem like Sony did the minimum possible to get their homework in vs trying to really innovate or dominate this sector of the market. Still, gripes and all, people are going to make amazing images with this (though people are still making amazing images with the i and ii).

Width and height are only 11mm and 4mm difference between the new camera and an A7CR. Technology has moved on and there are far better cameras available for considerably less money that are only marginally larger.

Judging by the negative reaction to the EVF, lack of IBIS and price, who.. exactly.. what demographic is Sony marketing to? Should we now expect the A7Rvi to be wildly more expensive and less capable? Is R&D dead at Sony, or has it moved on to a different product line? Perhaps this is over-reacting, but such a disappointing successor to the ii. Perhaps this is a marketing push to sell more A7Cr cameras, but to be fair, it is smaller than the A7Cr with the smallest lens.
Sony is just chasing the tiktok X100 retro trend. Fuji proved there are people willing to pay ludicrous sums for anything that looks "retro" regardless of functionality.
p.4 #9 · Official: Sony RX1R III Digital Camera announced!
Ooo, quite a compact camera imo. But unfortunately, it doesn't have IBIS, has a low 5 fps burst rate and fixed LCD. On the plus side, it has a 61mp sensor and a leaf shutter! It will be so quiet!
I guess we have to go back to the argument that we are essentially paying the compactness premium, that it cost more to squeeze impressive tech into a smaller body, except that it is harder to justify it here because the lens is still the same and the body still doesn't have IBIS.
If compared against the A7CR, this is simply too expensive. You can pair an A7CR with a 35mm 1.4 and they'll come out cheaper than the RX1Riii. If compared against the leica Q3, it is not that much cheaper, so people who want the leica won't really be switching for a small percentage saving.

I think this is all very fair. Most of the components in this camera are 2015-2019-2023 tech. Nothing that really says 2025 to me.
If the lens, sensor, EVF and most other internals are the same what are people going to pay $5000 for?
Now if they had but that funky FX2 EVF on here that would be a different story!

Huge RX1 fan. Excited to see a minor refresh with the performance of the current models but disappointed at missing what might have been.
Wish they’d made it a halo project to see what their engineers could do as an exemplar project with Sony’s engineering and miniaturization prowess. And take some risks - like maybe no EVF for smaller form factor or to cram IBIS in there and maybe rethink ergonomics and add some more manual controls (e.g. resurrect third dial from NEX 7). Come out with a product with conviction like the original RX1.
But a minor refresh keeping the lens but with significant cost reductions from the original (using all those shared components with A7C series) and drastically higher price is a smart, conservative biz decision. I’m sure sales of the most innovative RX1v3 would be a fraction of other product lines, so why invest much.

Bet they’d have made more money if they’d redesigned and released the 35/2 sonnar as an interchangeable lens at premium price (“GM Artisan” line or whatever). Assuming that were technically possible, given the lens/sensor design of the RX1 looks nothing like FE mount.

An argument can be made that the RX1R II was in synch with contemporary technology at the time of its launch.
I wonder if we can say the same about this follow-on model. It seems the years, if not the price, may have passed its specs by.

As someone who owned and loved the RX1 and RX1r2, here are some thoughts.
1. Am I the only person that misses the EVF add on for the RX1/r? That thing was amaing tech. Fit into the hotshoe, allowed for a built-in (and HIGHLY functional flash) that would sync up to 1/4000, without HSS? Amazing setup. And the EVF would swivel to 90 degrees to shoot looking straight down.
2. IBIS would have been very, very nice.
3. Price is appropriate for both inflation and tariffs. Have a problem? Call your congressman. Talk about how many cameras are made in the US and why the US isn't the world leader in camera and lens tech.
4. This was never a camera for ergonomics. Compact cameras aren't. And calling this a compact.... it brings up odd conotations. Its a fixed lens camera in the vein of the Contax G2, the Leica Minilux, or even the classic TLR's (without the hip-shooting).
5. The comparison to the Fuji GFX100rf is not siumple as they are very different cameras. Both extremely interesting, but very different. MF with a fixed aperture at 100mp, or FF with a to die for lens and small package.
6. DID SONY LEARN NOTHING ABOUT DUST ON THE SENSOR? THERE SHOULD BE WEATHER SEALING! AND IT SHOULD BE HIGHLY TOUTED!
I am interested to see if this will drive down the prices for a used RX1r with the EVF. What a legendary halo product.

Painful pricing, that'll be a lot in EUR sadly. Not the direction they should have taken here.
People don't want Leica Q3 pricing, they just want a small and simple camera.
Also, if this is the A7RIV sensor then people are paying a LOT for a 6 year old sensor
And a 13 years old lens.
I mean, I'm a Zeiss fan and the Sonnar 2,0/35mm is still a good lens, but not necessarily 61 megapixel good, much has happened in 13 years of optical development. The Distagon 2,0/35mm of the highly maligned Zeiss ZX1 is a far superior lens in every objective respect, on par with the Leica Apo-Summicron M 2,0/35mm.

you should have seen all the whining about the og rx1 and just what demographic sony was targeting then.
sony has obviously moved on to a different product line, this is the first refresh in 10 years. mostly just a refresh to modern AF and sensor to give the small number of folks who loved the old rx1 something new to buy imo.
as one of those people, i'm mostly happy. if they had updated the lens or increased it's size, i wouldn't be interested. i am sad they lost the tilt lcd and the price is certainly high.
I think you summed it up perfectly. The version III is really for those who fell in love with the RX1 series from the beginning. People stick with it mainly for the size and the unique IQ and rendering that the lens produces. Ergonomics and features were never its strong suit. Many of us dealt with the severely limited battery life, with some needing 4 or 5 batteries, and other compromises that still exist today.
I agree that the move to a fixed LCD does reduce flexibility and feels like a step back. But losing the pop-up EVF in favor of a fixed one, along with a much larger battery, while still maintaining the same IQ and lens rendering with modern AF, is what makes it appealing. Of course, this is really only for those who already appreciate what the RX1 series is about. IBIS would be nice but I don't think it's really possible for this camera size and being full frame.
The release of the A7C series definitely took some of the spotlight away, and that may be why it took Sony so long to bring out a new RX1 version. Now we have two camps who care about compact full-frame setups, those who prefer the RX1 and those who go with the A7C series. Each has its pros and cons, but both aim to offer great portability.. The A7CR body is cheaper, but keep in mind you would need to add a high-performing 35mm f/2 lens with unique rendering that matches the RX1's Sonnar. In other words, you would need a lens that doesn’t really exist, at any price.

sadly, that is pretty much impossible. the only way that lens works is with a giant (bigger than e-mount throat) rear element basically sitting on top of the sensor.

I'm long time Rx1r/ii fan boy. But the more I really think about the specs the more it frustrates me that Sony doesn't even know their customer base they built this for. Just comes across like a money grab. I really don't care about the price. They had the opportunity to make this a camera stand out which anyone even from other brands would want. Instead they used recycled parts and cheeped out on things they did put in. Super disappointing.
