I mean, the X100VI is a fantastic camera too, but if Fujifilm was charging $3,000 for it I’d say that was ridiculous too. It’s hard to swallow a $5,300 RX1R III with this corner cutting when a medium format GFX100RF can be had for $500 less.
It’s not that this camera is bad…I just think it’s a terrible value.

Now gdan, are you going to pollute this thread with over 50 posts why people should not buy this camera like you did with the GFX100rf thread?

I’ll bet Chez stays in the lead here.
For the record, I think it is probably a good camera (Sony makes good stuff) with a limited but enthusiastic potential market… and that it seems overpriced and, well, you know…

Thank you for reupping this. The 35 2.0 Zeiss bolted to the Sony handheld is legendary for rendering. I suspect that the RIII lens will perform similarly. But I was particularly drawn to these comments from that thread about RX1R usability.

The RX1 is comparatively brutal to use nowadays (not because it's small), whereas the 35i is so just about perfect.

I mean, it’s a discussion forum. I don’t think there are very many people that think this will be a poor camera, but it is hard to swallow a $5,000+ price tag when it’s using a 5 year old sensor, a 10 year old lens and an EVF that is standard spec for budget cameras, while charging $500 for a lens hood and thumb grip.
The camera itself will likely be pretty excellent, and the images it creates will be fantastic, no doubt. But the ultra premium price while at the same time cutting cost corners in multiple areas doesn’t really sit well with me. I don’t mind them reusing the excellent 61MP sensor and the excellent Zeiss lens…but there’s no R&D cost for those items either. ...Show more →
I get that and wouldn't disagree with that point of view. When it comes to price, at least here in the US, I think we're in a strange stretch here. Whipsawing on tariffs, understanding how much to pass along to the consumer....how much it will impact sales volume? Do we raise prices globally to try to make up for it? What is the price that will help you maintain margins, etc. Do you price a little higher and accept lower sales volume, etc. Not knowing whether the tariff is going to be 10%, tomorrow 30%...back to 10%. Many of the manufacturers have raised their prices recently, so I'm wondering if for newly announced products they are pricing on the high side due to uncertainty. Bringing a price down is hailed....raising it you get a black eye.
I get that there are features missing that disappoint people, but it is what it is. If the product doesn't fit the need, try to find one that does. There will always be some things any given individual will like, or not like, etc. Definitely not saying anyone should change their preferences of what they feel they need and don't need.
To some extent I think this line of cameras has always been somewhat niche. When it comes to niche, sometimes conventional expectations don't map 100% to reality.

Big difference Gggdan. I’m actually interested in a high mpix fixed lens compact camera for my travels. I’ve looked at the Gfx100rf and now this. You on the other hand have zero interest in these cameras and yet here you are chest beating how the lack of ibis makes these cameras archaic. You did the exact same thing on the Fuji thread to the point multiple people called you out. Maybe all you want is to be heard…well we’ve heard you, now just crawl away.

For sure. To me, differentiator for the Q series is, yes, size and FL and lens rendering which are more immediately obvious and discussed, but also the usability is fantastic--from physical button layout, to menus, EVF, etc. Just a wonderfully smooth camera to use. I have owned a couple Q2's. While I couldn't justify keeping the camera given the price and what I perceived to be great but not fantastic images at the camera size, I did just love the usability.
Brad (freaklikeme) was spot on with his assessment--I agree. RX1's are not fun to actually use.

Well if the camera is excellent and the images it produces are excellent…isn’t that the name of the game. Yes it’s expensive, but so many things in life are expensive. Hell a photography trip just about anywhere starts at double the price of the rx1r3 and goes up from there. That’s for a couple of weeks. This camera can be for life.
Would you be willing to share your reasons why you aren't considering buying this camera?

I guess I’m the outlier here - I actually think my RX1Rii is fun to use.
the rx1rii is definitely more fun than the og rx1, but the AF is still too slow/inaccurate for me to use and the manual focus is terrible focus by wire. it seems like they only fixed one of these problems.
i actually really like the handling outside the focus issues. the shutter button was definitely a huge step above contemporary sony cameras in terms of shutter lag.

Once you have to resort to using any sort of separate carry pouch/ bag/ sling, the size of the camera becomes less important in my experience.
The difference between a small and a large bag can matter. I use a tiny shoulder bag in which the RX1 and an ND filter in its case is a very snug fit. I’m almost never asked to cloak this in places like art galleries and concert halls, whereas with a bigger bag I would be. In winter, it doesn’t matter because you have to cloak your umbrella and coat anyway. In summer, having to queue up twice to cloak and uncloak could easily waste half an hour or as much as an hour if it’s busy. Do that two or three times a day on a grand tour of Europe or a minibreak to another city and it begins to really add up and matter, especially if you’re with nonphotographers who would otherwise not be wasting this time.

I get your point..and I'm guessing your not referring to being a Klingon with all that "cloaking".

FWIW, I think the camera is a ton of fun to use and in no way is at all comparable to shooting on a smartphone. It's such a better experience, to me. I've used my RX1s, as stated now, for about 11 years. The shutter button and response is amazing, and the dials are tactile and nice to use. It's a nicely built and designed camera, and I hope the new one feels similar.

Exactly. It is a personal preference. For me, RX1 is not "pocketable". I don't wear fleece in summer, but that's also a personal preference.

Since I mentioned pocketable. This is a setup I used for a few years that with RX1 in my fleece or hoody or jacket pocket with M camera with 50mm on my neck during hiking or city traveling. Some time, either it or Leica M are in one of divider for my 4-6L bag with two additional lenses. and I have lots of memory just take this one out with me for photo walk or family out. I don't want to over stress "Pocketable" as this became personal choice, Just want to highlight the size difference between this and Q or GFXRF.
And Size is one perspective and only part of total package. I bought GRs and sold them within month each time as it is not for me. RX1 is totally different experience and in another league. ...Show more →

This is a really odd move, but I bet it'll sell just fine for Sony, further reinforcing the capitalist ideals.
It's probably going to be a much better camera to own and use than either a Leica Q or Fuji GFX100RF.
Too bad about the low spec EVF and lack of IBIS. Too bad about the price.

Why this camera has to be used in summer?
Even here in north California summer, it is common upper 40, low 50 around beach.
