Oh Sony...you are so mean...why didn't you price this the way I think you should have. Woe is me, what's happened to Sony. Why did you remove <insert feature here>, why didn't you add <insert feature here>. Sony....you could have been the north star in a dark night, the whipped cream on my sundae.

Sorry...some of the posts here tend to get somewhat melodramatic. It's a camera.....if it makes sense, buy it...if not, don't buy it. If some other camera makes sense, buy it.

And I think there is some innovation in the Sony 28-70 f/2 GM compared to the Canon 28-70 f/2 L. They were both innovative, but for different reasons. The Canon was innovative since it was the first of its kind. The Sony was innovative due to size and weight. (There was an offer to hear the bad news about innovation that someone idly threatened to share....please share! Don't just dangle the threat of sharing the bad news. It leaves me hanging.)

Tbh, be it Sony, canon, Nikon, Fuji, Leica or Hasselblad, they are all the same to me. Either they design something at a price and features set I want to pay or not. The decision is too personal to make a big deal of it to others.

I applaud Fuji, Leica and Sony introduce 100RF, Q3 and rx1r3 so that fellower photographers can find one suit them better.

They can throw all they know in this little RX1 for another X grams, Y liter and Z $, I am sure it will piss off certain people just like now.
You either buy it or not. It is a free market. For price, if there is another similar product from Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Leica or even Sony themselves offer better package than RX1 at lower cost, or better performance, great. Everybody win. So far, none after original RX1 introduced 10 years ago.
If Sony can push entire industry to a direction against customer, well, they will be the first one to fail. So be it. Who determine it is right or wrong though?

RX1r3 could have been such a failure but all I care is I am willing to pay at ask price for a product I’d like to use now. Simple as that.

Laziness like this camera isn't the right step that they need to be taking right now. Curious why think the 28-70 F2 isn’t innovative?

The spec at this price point I will get the Q2 or Q3.
Yea, it is smaller than Q2 and Q3 but they are not fit to the pocket, the size doesn't make difference here.

The wait list queue seems quite long in the flagship east asia stores, so going to wait until I see a ready to ship or buy.

There's no real competitor if the primary focus is on minimal volume pairing for this form factor.

I don't shoot low angles that much so really appreciate the more reliable and simplified aesthetics of the screen articulation removal. Really adored the Panasonic GM1 for a similar reason.

Pretty excited about this camera cause nowadays I tend to focus more on the whole experience vs. trying to find fault in (to me) minor details.

I never found the original RX1 to be "pocketable" and always used a small sling/ bag for carry. Clearly some folks have bigger pockets! At 4.5 x 2.7 x 3.4" for this RX1, it's not like one can easily slip it into a pocket...say like a relatively thin Ricoh GRIII. The thickness due to the wonderful lens on the RX1 prevents it from being truly "pocketable" imo. Once you have to resort to using any sort of separate carry pouch/ bag/ sling, the size of the camera becomes less important in my experience.

This exactly. If the weather is warm I’m not wearing a jacket and therefore will have no pocket to put this camera in. I don’t like carrying heavy objects in my jacket pocket anyway. I almost always carry a small sling bag that easily fits an a7r5 and two other small lenses. I don’t think I’d notice the difference between this new compact camera in my bag versus the a7r5 with a small lens.

And for $5,100, I can buy the following e-mount Voigtlanders at used prices: 10/5.6,15/4.5, 21/1.4, 28/1.5, 35/1.2, 50/1.2, 50/1.0, and 75/1.5. It’s easy for me to say no to the Rx1r3.

Bokeh is subjective. It depends so much on the particular photo. I looked back at your test from 2021 and all of those lenses look good to me. For Scene 4 ("Bokeh and transition at f2 at 10-12 feet"), several people ranked the FE 35/1.8 in their top three.

Comparing the following handheld landscape shots:

Ricoh GRIIIx at ISO 3200 and 1/2s (4 stops Ibis) and
Sony RX1RIII at ISO 50000 and 1/30s (no IBIS)

I‘m not sure the RX1 will come out better. This comparison shows how much serious value can be gained from Ibis!

For my serious landscape photography I typically set my iso to base and use a tripod.

Yeah, for me Sony has always been identified by technical achievement. Their cameras have not inspired photography through their looks, heritage or user experience. They excelled at technical performance. When they leave out technology and start raising prices they really lose what made them unique.

RoamingScott wrote:
The problem is, the specs fall short of a true halo product. If it checked every box and was $5500, people would actually go buy it in numbers, because the demand for a truly small camera of that capability is quite high. Terrible analogy, and silly to assume that people are "trying to find flaws" with a badly placed item in a very competitive market. Sony is just being lazy, just as they have been for the last 3-4 years.

It's interesting to read all the comments. It will be interesting to see reviews coming out soon, compared to other fixed-lens cameras. I think this camera has a place for people who can afford and are looking for the most compact form factor travel camera (EDC) that has a very FAST, fool-proof auto-focus with the best image quality possible. I wish it used the NPFZ100 battery so I could use my existing Sony batteries. I think if they accommodated that battery, they probably could have gotten a flip-screen as well due to the thickness bump.

When I travel light with a bare rucksack, I usually do not have the luxury of free space and a weight allowance that would allow carrying a tripod.

This is is what this camera is all about: reducing weight (and size). Topping this camera up with a tripod appears counterintuitive to me.

The point I wanted to make was: part of the shooting envelope of the RX1Riii is lost due to lack of ibis. Without ibis hand held low light shots most likely will not exceed the quality of a Ricoh GR.

Regards this new RX1R III I would be seriously considering it if it had either IBIS or inbuilt flash.

I don't know about anyone else, but the thing that I most miss from this is lack of inbuilt flash. I find it sad that Ricoh, Fuji and Sony all seem to have moved/be moving away from inbuilt flash on small bodies, particularly when paired with leaf shutter fixed lens body (yes I know X100VI, but Fuji have ditched flash from their XM and XE lines).

The thing about flash (+leaf shutter), however, is that no amount of IBIS, high iso performance (or computational photography for that matter), can sufficiently replicate/replace the function and look of flash in two very specific but common scenarios: fill in very bright light, and motion capture in very low light. Furthermore, the flash "look" is IMO really quite a nice look when done right. Personally I keep a small segment of peach coloured filter diffuser taped over the flash of my Fuji X70 to warm the flash light up a touch and that really helps with giving bonnie looking skin tone.

Until manufacturers of fixed lens digital cameras start including flash again I will be sticking with my X70. For taking something along to capture memories with friends and family nothing beats it: Truly pocketable. 28mm perfect for up close, group shots and context. Selfie screen. Phase detect AF (doesn't always hit but plenty good and fast enough). Use Fuji sims to create my perfect recipes for instantly sharing (who has time to edit these sort of pictures?! I keep the raws for when I retire).

It If I want absolute max IQ then my concern is landscape and for that I don't see much difference in terms of carry weight between RX1Riii or Q cameras vs A7CR - as one or two others have already pointed out. IBIS along with the option of a couple of focal lengths or a short range (24-50) for me is paramount if the primary activity is say hiking but I want something I can take along for the ride in case of potential amazing scenes. If I'm going out to make landscape pictures then I'll lug my GFX AND Pentax medium format film camera because that is the prime activity.

This RX1R iii doesn't seem the perfect camera for any use case I can think of.

If someone has ever hiked in a dark tropical forest, he will understand that light (or the lack of light) can be really troublesome. You want a really light camera (no way you would be carrying a tripod) and maximal light gathering ability of your camera. Ibis (Ricoh GRIII+/-x) is one way, bigger sensor (RX1) another approach. But 4 stop ibis will cut it more than one f-stop more light through a larger sensor.

i love IBIS, but I find it not terribly helpful in forests where the wind moves the branches too much for slower exposures. cityscapes and people are where it really pays off for me.

Most landscapes that have any vegetation require a faster shutter to stop movement more times than not. It’s a very rare day where there is zero wind and it does not take much breeze at all to move leaves.

Maybe landscapes in the deserts or rock mountains could take advantage of ibis, but I just don’t see the usefulness of ibis in dense tropical forests. I’ve shot many times in the Hawaiian forests as well as up here in BC in the coastal rain forests and I always have to keep an eye on the shutter speed to remove blur caused by wind.

I always carry a tripod if I’m out shooting landscapes. There is no better way to achieve ultimate sharpness. And yes I’ve hiked many of miles through tropical rainforest ( Hawaii, Mexico and Vietnam ) as well as large elevation gains in the Rocky Mountains.

I mean, it’s a discussion forum. I don’t think there are very many people that think this will be a poor camera, but it is hard to swallow a $5,000+ price tag when it’s using a 5 year old sensor, a 10 year old lens and an EVF that is standard spec for budget cameras, while charging $500 for a lens hood and thumb grip.

The camera itself will likely be pretty excellent, and the images it creates will be fantastic, no doubt. But the ultra premium price while at the same time cutting cost corners in multiple areas doesn’t really sit well with me. I don’t mind them reusing the excellent 61MP sensor and the excellent Zeiss lens…but there’s no R&D cost for those items either.

Well if the camera is excellent and the images it produces are excellent…isn’t that the name of the game. Yes it’s expensive, but so many things in life are expensive. Hell a photography trip just about anywhere starts at double the price of the rx1r3 and goes up from there. That’s for a couple of weeks. This camera can be for life.
