Interesting. The normal thread pitch is .75mm, which is also considered to be "fine". Coarse thread filters are 1mm pitch. The lens I rented came with a Hoya EVO Antistatic Protector, and to my knowledge they only come in standard (fine) pitch, not coarse. I also used a step down ring from 95mm to 82mm, and as far as I know, it was not coarse either.

Not a lot of options for coarse thread filters at B&H.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=95mm%20coarse&filters=fct_category%3Auv-lens-filter_112

Obviously I'm missing something.

I don't get the coarse vs fine thread thing...

I'm pretty sure that most of us have "normal filters" on our lenses.

Do the filters that you guys have on the 50-150 specifically say coarse thread?? I'm using a Breakthrough 95mm UV... and it fits fine. Nowhere on the package or website , does it say coarse thread.

Its my understanding that the coarse thread is the "standard" spec for lenses 95mm and above. I've only seen the 95C call out on PolarPro and some Tiffen filters.

Well, since Polar Pro doesn't offer this particular VND filter in the coarse thread pitch, I ordered one of these to try and solve one problem. Will just have to abstain from the hood when using it.

All I can say is I've use 4 different filters...none of them are published as being other than a "normal" 95mm filter. Whatever pitch "normal" is for 95mm.

Let us know what you find.

First shot with the lens at 150 f2 1/160 1000 ISO, and first posted photo. Just shot the closest thing to me. I've never shot at 150 2.0, the DOF is shallow! Sharpness seems fine on an A7III (next upgrade).

So my assessment of this lens after taking about 10k photos over the course of a few days is pretty positive. As you can expect, this lens just performs.

Auto focus is perfect, image quality superb, and the zoom ring is very easy to throw. As you can see above, I basically used the entire zoom range.

With fencing, the most accessible angle is usually 45 degrees from the strip. This means you have to constantly adjust the zoom to move with the fencers going back and forth. I never found I needed more reach or go wider. I typically was only on the 50mm end when I was facing the fencers perpendicular to the strip.

I thought that the size/weight would be a problem for me, but it wasn't so bad. This thing is a beast, but I think it's mostly problematic when transporting, not actually shooting. I have a QD strap attached to my Leofoto foot, so it's easy to carry around a venue when not shooting.

I don't think this lens is practical for everyday shooting. It's just too cumbersome to have to take out of a bag and shoot things on a whim. For example, I was walking around Milwaukee and would have loved to take some street photos, but it just didn't happen because I had the camera/lens packed away in my backpack. I used my iPhone instead.

So really, for me, this lens is a purpose-built for events. You take it to the event and shoot at the event, period. Nothing in between.

The sharpness and bokeh falloff are exceptional on this lens. Does it replace primes for me? It replaced the 135 GM, which I have no regrets about. I also have 85 GM II. I don't think it will replace that lens, but not because of image quality differences, but simply due to the size/weight and accessibility. I'll use the 85 for portraits still. I also have the 35 GM, but it obviously doesn't conflict with the 50-150, so I'll be keeping that as well (nevermind that I have acquired a bunch of Voigtlander lenses recently).

I don't travel to cities much, but while on vacation in Michigan, I had my a7R V and 50-150 on a Pgytech camera clip on my backpack strap, and my GFX100s and 35-70 (most of the time) just on a regular strap.

Not suggesting that makes sense for anyone else at all. But it was pretty nice to have the 28-55 range covered with the Fuji and 50-150 covered with my Sony. They were both very accessible. Again, not suggesting that is workable for anyone, or it makes sense in a city.

I'm going to try a Cotton Carrier setup, see how that works.

I use this as a walk around lens when I feel like doing photography. It is no harder to take out of a bag then any other camera/lens combination. I don't do events. The lens is much, much more useful than I expected, and downright fun.

That’s awesome! I should have prefaced my post by saying I’m typically towing two young kids with lots of bags. Photography must be able to adapt to the chaos that is attached to my life. I mean that in the most endearing way. I do hope to be able to use this lens for other things (it’s certainly more than capable). Besides the size and weight, the sharpness of the lens is next level so you could and should use the lens stopped down for situations that don’t call for F/2.0.

2 children is definitely a handful and I can see how that can sap energy. I just did the one and he is out of the house now.

I was not sure how I'd work the f2 in, but I have been learning when it is best at f2 vs an f8. It also doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome, which I initially expected.

Love this lens - I actually favour it over my 50/1.2 and 85/1.4 which is something I never did with any zoom before
