p.1 #1 · Using Leica together with other camera brands?

I'm curious and would like to know about people who currently shoot with Leica gear, having migrated from other gear such as Fuji, Nikon, Canon and Sony. Do you still use your non-Leica cams/lenses as well as using Leica cams/lenses, how often and for what purposes not fulfilled by your Leica gear?

For example, in the past when I was actively using my Sony cams, I recall years ago that Fred was particularly active on the Sony discussions of both cameras and lenses. But I see so many of his posts regarding testing and real world use of his Leica gear that I wonder roughly what percentage of his photography is currently from using non-Leica gear.

In my own case, until February 2024, I used my Sony cams (currently I've got a 7RV) predominantly for street photography (my thing) and less frequently for landscape (having finally determined from a Marc Adamus trip to New Zealand that my heart just isn't into landscape. But starting about 15 months ago I migrated to Leica, and now I only use the Sony once a year when as a favor to the artistic director of the professional Asheville Ballet (Terpsicorps) I shoot her studio rehearsals as well as dress rehearsal - something for which I need the amazing AF tracking that thet the Sony provides. Other than that it sits on the shelf, and I'm constantly out shooting with either M11M, Q3 or film in my MP and M6 classic. And as an aside, although I'll soon be getting a M11P to replace my CL for color digital, my heart stays with the M11M, my favorite camera ever.

Would be interested to hear about others who either routinely shoot both Leica and other brands, or who have migrated to Leica.

p.1 #2 · Using Leica together with other camera brands?

To test the waters, with digital photography, I bought a Sony DSC-H20 camera, larger than a pocket camera, but with a fixed-in-place zoom lens. This was about 2008 or 2009, or so. I later learned that some people call this a “bridge” camera. I soon realized that macro photography was important, and started shopping for DSLRs.

Fortuitously, a bag of Canon kit was found to be available, for me to use. The camera was an XTi, a.k.a. 400D. More importantly, in addition to the kit zoom, a Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro Macro lens, and the then-top-tier 580EX Speedlite, were also in the bag. I quickly realized that the tiny camera body was difficult to use, as if made for children’s tiny hands. I learned about “semi-pro” camera bodies, and quickly bought a pre-owned Canon 40D, in late 2010. This was soon followed by Canon’s best EF EOS system macro lens, the weather-sealed EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro I.S. (IS = Image Stabilization) By then, I had attended police forensic photography training, and was on a fast-track to VERY serious photography, in all weather, day and night. Canon EOS EF remains my serious macro system, with a “team” of 7D Mark II, 5Ds R, and 5D Mark IV cameras.

When my wife’s employer, the County Medical Examiner, went digital, for death scene and forensic images, a Canon 40D was her first issued camera. For some reason, the next batch of issued cameras were Nikon, and the M.E’s office settled upon Nikon DSLRs for all of their photography. She used the D200, then D300, and then D300s. (Notably, it was while handlingher employer’s D300s, that something “clicked” in my brain, about becoming a serious photographer.) My wife and I both started become serious about nature, bird, and wildlife photography. It soon became apparent that our “pro zoom trinity” and long telephoto lenses would break our budget, if we tried to build two complete sets of lenses, for two systems. So, I started adding pre-owned Nikon F-mount cameras, in 2014, and then new Nikon D5 and D850 camera in 2018. Nikon F remains my most-often-used DSLR system, other than macro. My wife has added one Nikon Z camera, but, generally, we still use Nikon F.

I added the Leica M system in April 2018, largely in order to be able to use one specific Leica lens, the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. I had seen images, posted on-line, captured with this lens. I then found a pre-owned Summilux, to test-shoot, at a full-line pro-oriented camera store, that was a Leica dealer. I fell in love with the Summilux, and with rangefinder shooting, during several visits to the camera store. I have added several other focal lengths, but normally use 50mm, 35mm, and, a distant third, 21mm.

A reason that my Canon kit seems frozen in time, with equipment dating from the 2016-2018 era, is because I retired from the police department in 2018, so, had much less need to do serious macro shooting. Part of recovering from the stress of police photography was leaving my Canon equipment largely cased/boxed, for about five years. In 2023, my wife and I started photographing insects, at night, for “citizen scientist” purposes. “Action Macro” Time, again! The Canon 100 Macro L lens has excellent Image Stabilization, and its highly-capable AF does amazing things at and near MFD.

I migrated from Nikon, to Sony, and then on to Leica M, currently M11. I still have my Sony A1 and a good set of GM lenses. Over the last couple of years I only used the A1 for when I needed autofocus, primarily portraits and moving subjects. I recently picked up a Leica SL3 system. The autofcus is now good enough for all uses except Birds in Flight, and other super fast moving subjects. The other areas where Sony has the advantage is when zooms and/or long reach is required. Since these use cases are not my current interests, I am thinking of selling my Sony gear and being all Leica. I may just sell my GM primes, and keep the A1 and a simple Zoom kit for when I need that.

The form factor, shooting experience, and image quality, I get with the M11 system cannot be replicated by any other system currently available.

The SL3, when coupled with the Leica APO-Summilux-SL primes I find provides the highest image quality available today from any Full Frame sensor system. The shooting experience (when using primes) , workflow, build quality, and weather resistance are also industry leading. The form factor of the SL3 is a bit big and heavy but for my use cases with the SL3 it is not that big a deal.

What may surprise many is that if buying and selling used, the economics of shooting Leica are actually very favorable. The used market is big and active, and so far I have basically broken even or profited slightly when selling my Leica gear. It requires a larger initial investment that many other systems, but at exit the cost is near zero.

interesting. So do you think that SL3 with APO SL primes provides higher quality than, say, a M11 with a 35 APO M when focus on the M11 has been perfectly dialed in? Or are you thinking that the AF of the SL3 will simply result in better focus than a rangefinder?

I got Leica m39 gear in the mid 90's using it next to Nikon. I liked it a lot, but fl pretty limited at the time and no macro so I didn't use it so much. It did prompt me to switch to Olympus though due to the excellent ergonomics

I also tried Leica r around that time , but it was more expensive and it was like which lens do you want to do without. None of course so I stayed Nikon.

Of course, it doesn't really matter what everyone else does, it's what works, for you. And it depends on what you buy some of these expensive $4-6k bodies of other brands probably cost more than Leica especially if you get a new 600mm

Only recently added a Leica M-P and while I like the experience, I don't see myself just shooting Leica.

Using different kinds of cameras is part of the fun for me. I regularly use Nikon mirrorless (Zf, Z7), DSLRs (Nikon D700, Hasselblad H3D), a IR-converted Fuji X-T3 and a Ricoh GR IIIx. And that's just digital

The Nikon Zf is by far the most versatile of my cameras and if I could keep just one camera, I'd probably pick a Nikon (maybe even a DSLR..)

Yes, and the MTF chart show this clearly. But, it is mostly at the corners and edges when it comes to meaningful line pair comparisons. I think the bigger differences come from how the APO-SL handles contrast, fall off, and vignetting. These are also important to IQ. Realistically, these are probably mostly pixel peeping differences, but none the less real technically. I have yet to be disappointed by the IQ of my M11 when a quality lens is used. I use the systems very differently, and for different use cases.

Honestly, in many circumstances I think perfectly focused images can be obtained with either MF Range Finder, or AF SL. With the much improved AF now in the SL3, it has clear advantages with people (eye AF) and moving subjects. Getting focus spot on provides a clear IQ advantage. Additionally, the close focus ability of the SL is better than the M. Although the published close focus capability of the two lenses is similar (SL 0.27m/ M 0.30m) , when you need to close focus (closer that 0.70mm) the M you have to switch to some sort of live view solution not RF.

It should also be noted that one can buy the 35mm APO_Summicron-SL for much less than the APO-Summicron-M both new and used. A relative IQ bargain in the Leica World.

I bounce between Leica, Sony, Hasselblad and Fujifilm GFX. I like them all in different ways.

Sony is my choice for super teles and AF. The new f2 zooms are also a big draw. Both are simply excellent. A have the A1ii, A1, A7R5 and A7CR. I appreciate how brilliant they are but I don’t love them. They’re brilliant but I’m never tempted to throw on a nifty fifty and go for a walk with a Sony. K shoots Canon and feels the same way.

Hasselblad is my preferred system, within its shooting envelope. I need a longer zoom to be added but that’s about it. The GFX is stronger in zooms and the super fast primes are handy, but it has Sony vibes for the camera and menus. I also have some plans for the GFX 500mm. The file quality from the larger sensor is intoxicating. The files are super robust in processing. And the Hasselblad is the best camera in hand in the world. It also does manual focus really well with the V lenses.

Leica is my everyday cameras. I wish the SL3 had EFCS. That limits the camera for me (for longer lenses) but it’s still my favourite small format system. The APO Summicrons are the big draw but it’s the overall simplicity’s and ruggard build that I’m most drawn to. I do keep an S1Rii for the EFCS but I generally look at the L mount as one system. I’m moving away from L mount for standard zooms though. If I’m going to wield a 24-90 I’d rather a Sony 28-70 f2.0. L mount standard zooms are either huge or just very good (ie: not spectacular). A lighter version II of the 24-90 is desperately needed. I’d like a faster focusing 90-280 as well.

I have an emotional attachment to my M’s. It was my main system for a decade but not really any more. The SL3 has better IQ and everything else is easier. But I still use my M11M and I’ve ordered a M11 safari. I took a break from my M cameras but I’m going to use them more this year. M’s are really good at making me think about what I’m shooting. But likely the X2D will still be my main *slow* system. A SL3M would mean a dramatic reduction in M use for sure but likely I’ll always have an M or two.

My most used Leica is my Q3-43. It’s a joy. I have a Q3-28 and really wish for a Q3-90. The Q3-43 mixes the size of an M with the IQ of an APO Summicron SL with my favourite focal length. What’s not to like?

I use a bunch of brands. I’m currently in the US and left my Leica M and Q2M at home (brought the D-Lux 8) and brought Olympus, Canon and Fuji GFX. At other times, it’s the Olympus and the Leica in the mix. It all depends on my expectations as to what I will find.

For me, Fuji has been the second brand I keep going back to after Leica M. They generally offer something unique and I think their cameras complements my Leica kit well.

I recently tried Sony APS-C and Nikon full frame again recently and honestly just found their gear to be too big and image output to be kind of boring. I also just sold off my q3 43mm APO - really enjoyed using that camera so might regret it but the GFX100RF is my current large sensor point and shoot of choice given the sheer amount of resolution and sensor size although that f4 lens is just too slow.

As for SL, I've considered adding a Leica SL3-S mainly so I can use my M lenses for video but the price is high and performance is low compared so hard to justify in my opinion but I'm still tempted whenever I see a SL3-S on buy/sell. Fuji GFX though is generally calling to me these days so might end up there as my second system to my M-kit.

I shot the M3, M4 and, later, the M6 starting in the late 1960’s. I had my own darkroom. Today, you couldn’t pay me enough to shoot film.

When Leica moved into digital, their sensors were not great, so I dropped rangefinders and went with Nikon and Canon DSLR’s.
Today, I shoot the A1 II, A1 and A7R5, combined with a cabinet crammed full with their premium glass. This system is absolutely outstanding.

I had a recent, but brief foray into GFX (GFX 100S II), but after extensive testing, found that the advantages of the great 100mp sensor and Fuji glass could not keep pace with the latest Sony lens releases on the A7R5, so I sold the system, since overall focus performance (while good) couldn’t keep pace with my Sony cameras; plus, everything was bigger and heavier.

I recently acquired a Leica Q3 28mm which I have grown to absolutely love. I’ve now got eyes on a Q3 43mm, but will probably wait to see what a Q4 might bring.

Now re-exposed to Leica, I can already see that an M11 is likely in my future, just for an exercise in fun.

My Z7 is just used to scan film, so my 10r is my digi shooter. But when I had a Fuji Xpro3 and Oly PenF, those were in rotation w the 10r. They were all very different cameras which is why that worked.
But the Fuji and Oly have been sold, because I hardly shoot digital and so to hardly shoot three systems seemed a bit of a waste. The 10r was kept mainly because the lenses were compatible w my film Ms.

On the film side, I shoot anything and everything from Leica to Holga, 110 to 220. It's all good to me.

The Q2M is for monochrome. I find myself reaching for it more and more. I might make the switch to an M11M + two lenses.

The A7R3 is for color work. Mostly street/landscapes during travel, but a bit of macro too.

For scuba photography I am happy as a peach with the EM10 IV + 90 mm. But I will perhaps make the switch to an A7R5 or a more recent model. This would likely replace both the Olympus and the A7R3.

For super slow deliberate shots, I am still in love with 120 film.

I use Fuji system for many years, starting from XE1, XE2, XT20, and the current XT5.

But since I got M11 last year, I had been shooting more with M11 and buying more M mount glasses.

I sold some of the Fuji lenses and only kept the original kit zoom and 35/1.4. So i will keep XT5 only for when i need convenience in smaller package.
And M11 plus 4-5 lenses is my main system now.

Was thinking if I should replace XT5 with either Zf or SL3, but those are much bigger with the lenses.

I ventured into Leica when I desired a pure B&W camera. I bought the M9M. At that time I was shooting a Canon 5DsR (main body), 5D MKII converted to Full Spectrum, 5D MKII converted to IR, Nikon D800E, Sony A7S for video.

These days I shoot R5 MKII(main body), R5, R5 modified for Full Spectrum, M10M, M246, M9M, and M8. Fuji lent me a GFX 100S II last fall and after the trial I plan on adding one this year.

I dont know how you guys can use so many systems at once.
Do you bring more than 1 cam every time you go out?

Usually not. It does create small challenges. When shooting just one system, I find that I can quickly make setting changes, with little thinking about it. With multiple systems, I need to actually stop and think before making a change. Of course, this might be somewhat related to my old age.

Generally not, but it depends on the situation. One combo I’ve used quite a bit, though, is a Leica M with a wide lens and the Olympus Pen F with the tiny 45mm (90mm equivalent).

I used to wonder the same thing, but with myself now having 5 Leica bodies on which at various times I normally use about 6 lenses, and 1 Sony body on which in the infrequent times it comes of the shelf I use two GM lenses (I've got more good E mount lenses that I'll probably never use again and would sell them if I wasn't so lazy), I realize it's nice to have on the ready the gear that suits whatever I'm in the mood to shoot.
