I have both and I enjoy them both for different reasons. If I really had to choose one I would go with the Fuji, but that could also be because I am fully integrated in the Fuji system and they are the cameras I started with. The ricoh does produce amazing photos as well.

I have both Ricoh's and had the Fuji X100VI for a few weeks, and sold it here. I found Fuji too bulky compared to Ricoh's. I wanted the camera mainly for beach vacations, where I don't want to pack my Sony A7R IV. I carry Ricoh with this case -RICOH Leather Soft case GC-12 and it feels elegant and compact to take anywhere.

You cannot really compare these two cameras. Maybe in terms of image quality, but otherwise they are very different. X100VI. Compact but maybe not compact enough (there are alternatives). Ricoh GR III(x) smaller but therefore no viewfinder. I went with the Ricoh. You can have it in your trouser‘s pocket without even really noticing it .

Or you can simply dangle it from a wrist strap for hours without it getting in the way. It's the perfect camera to always have with you. It has a full-size APS-C sensor, a really good lens, plenty of settings (Pentax has always been good at that), and even image stabilization.

The lack of a viewfinder also makes it (for me) a different way of taking photos. More point-and-shoot.

X100VI vs GRIII, and the winner is…. Both, for different use cases, personal preferences…etc. I had a X100V, replaced it with a GRIII. I wanted something small and compact to carry around while hiking, biking…etc. the X100 fell short in that regard. The GRIII was a better solution for me, reminiscent of the Canon S90/S100 I had long ago. YMMV.

I have a GRIII and a X100V and they are both fantastic cameras. You can not go wrong with either of them, but at the end of the day it's all about the form factor. For me, I daily my GRIII and bring it everywhere with me since it can literally fit in my pockets. Whenever I go out to special occasions or outings, I bring out the X100V.

Seeing how you need a "compact camera to capture day to day moments", I'd suggest you check out the GR. Ricoh occasionally has refurb units directly on their site that float around $800. I've had a lot of people buy them and they just ended up being open box units with barely 100 clicks on them.

What I appreciate about this post and a few similar ones in this thread is the acknowledgment that we are almost never comparing the perfect thing with awful alternatives — we are looking at a range of competent products with different pluses and minuses, each of which might be ideal in certain situations.

That’s a refreshing – and accurate — perspective that is too often lacking in forum conversations, where too often the comparisons get reduced to “This thing GREAT. That thing TERRIBLE.”

Exactly. There is no camera that is perfect for all photographers and all use cases. I venture to say that most of the people here have more than one camera and more than one lens and that when they go out to shoot they choose the one that fits the situation. And we don't bash the one that doesn't work for that particular use because if were that bad we wouldn't have it.

p.6 #11 · Fujifilm X100VI vs Ricoh GR III

I wanted to share my experience because I’ve owned the Fuji XT2, Ricoh GRIII, Fuji x100v, Fuji XT4, Nikon z6, Nikon ZF, and Ricoh GRIIIx. I currently own the Nikon ZF and GRIIIx. I’m also the mom of two small kids.

I owned the GRIII at the same time as the XT2, before kids. I bought it for a cycling trip in Italy. It took great photos and was so easy to carry, but ultimately I preferred the Fuji colors and sold it. I preferred to shoot jpg only at the time.

Right before my first child was born, I decided to try the Nikon z6. The image quality was much better than the Fuji, but after my son was born I missed Fuji again (for the colors and dials) and bought the x100v. I loved it, and used it regularly for a couple years. The negatives—it was big to carry around discreetly, I couldn’t shoot with it one handed, and the image quality wasn’t the same as the full frame Nikon. Right before the birth of my second child, I started using the Nikon again and started editing the raw files. I was much happier with the images I got that way.

I ended up selling the Fuji for what I paid for it, sold the Z6, and bought a ZF because I like the Fuji style dials. The ZF is big, and with two kids I carry a lot more, so I got a GRIIIx for the small moments when I can’t carry the Nikon. I am very happy with this setup!

Imo, the Fuji is neither here nor there. It’s not pocketable, nor is the image quality quite as great once you’ve used a full frame. However, the body feels wonderful to hold and the JPGs are the best (the raw files however are the worse). The GRIII/x autofocus isn’t amazing (it’s definitely worse), but I use tap to shoot and honestly it’s fine. I should note I prefer the IIIx to the III—I like 40mm over 28mm for everyday photos, especially on the GR. The GR produces a kinda gritty contrasty look that’s especially noticeable on 28mm and I just don’t prefer it. But I shoot raw now so it doesn’t matter.

TLDR I think the Ricoh for everyday + full frame for special occasions is the ideal setup. But the X100 is also a beautiful and delightful camera to use. I wouldn’t want the Ricoh as my only camera because I like shooting with a proper camera/viewfinder/different focal lengths, but I could see the x100 being someone’s only camera (though I prefer the Nikon ZF now, myself).

I've never had any X100, but both GR3 and GR3x several times. Also I built my FF kit from A7III up to A7RIV and A7RV. The problem with FF ILCE is the portability, so the GR seemed a good possible solution. But my frustration with GR3(x) the lack of video capability, but more importantly the outdated AF, especially the lack of the eye tracking. Even a slight movement and the subject is out of focus. Also the camera itself has only a fixed screen, too small for my hands and no EVF. I almost bought a X100VI, but with the GFX100RF announcement I got my (almost) perfect camera. Thin, portable, tilting screen, EVF, has video, high resolution for cropping, eye-tracking AF, excellent IQ so I sacrificed my ILCE set by downgrading to A7III and sold some lenses. Between GR3 and X100VI I may choose the X100VI because GR's shortcomings, perhaps GR4 will solve the AF and video problem.

My experience has been really similar and I think I can chime in here as well. I have a couple young kids and have been trying to be more intentional about documenting them but also using a camera that stays out of the way/keeps me present.

GRiii - ultimate in portability. I usually will keep it in my pocket instead of my phone. Focus really sucks for this application but I get some great keepers with a higher aperture and/or snap focus. Any fast movement you can kiss it goodbye though, unless shooting around f/8 or more. I really want to try the iiix, though, as I just don't know that I love 28mm despite using the GRiii for the last 7+ years now.
I do really like the images, very sharp, but indoors it is mostly unusable without good natural light/highlight weighted metering. The high ISO noise is pretty bad compared to the x100vi and Zf.

Zf - unreal c-AF and IQ for me. The c-AF is basically as reliable as s-AF which is just nuts to me. The 40mm and 28mm lenses are great. The 24-70 f/4 is really cheap and a great do-anything lens. If the Zf was smaller, or if they made a Zs like a Sony A7c size, it would be perfection for me. The size is the only reason the Zf doesn't go everywhere with me. Some less than perfect smaller prime lenses would be awesome as well. I do like the TTartisan 50mm f2 a lot, its a fun lens.

x100vi - This one is the hardest for me. I was fortunate to snag one of the 'made in Japan' when they first were available at BH. I had an x100f in the past that I really enjoyed but man, the AF was awful. It would just give false AF confirmation all the time and when reviewing images later they were not in focus where they should have been. The AF on the x100vi is SO much better. Nowhere near the Zf still, but I use s-AF and eye detect and get a high rate of keepers. The eye detect on the x100vi is really good in my opinion. I don't really use c-AF still, unlike the Zf it just isn't that reliable.

The images look amazing to me, even in poor light. The high ISO has a pleasing look compared to the GRiii. I agree with what you said though that the SIZE is a weird middle ground. Not pocketable...and not THAT much different in terms of committing to carry it all day compared to the Zf+40/2. I need a sling for either one. It is much lighter than the Zf but when I am already packing a sling I am not sure how much it matters I guess.

The other thing that is a downside to me, for now at least, is that I almost get analysis paralysis with all the film sims, how I want this photo to look, etc. I enjoy using it, but it doesn't stay out of the way as much has the others do but I admit this is probably temporary until I figure out how I want to style these images. With my old x100f I just used astia or cc. The GR is much simpler - I usually use neg or pos film. With the Zf I really love the rich tone portrait colors, or the stock monochrome is incredible to me as well so I just lock those two in and use the mode dial to quick swap them depending on my mood.

I will probably sell one of these cameras...I know it won't be the Zf, though.

This was pretty long winded but I have been in this boat exactly so figured I would just word vomit some of my thoughts here. Happy to answer any questions on these three cameras if anyone has any.

p.6 #14 · Fujifilm X100VI vs Ricoh GR III

Two other comments on these. This matters a lot to me but might not to someone else. I don't really have the time or the desire to edit photos in detail anymore. I used to enjoy doing this but with kids now I just don't have the time to sit down and do this as much. I will shoot in raw+jpeg and rely on jpegs a lot now. I will keep the raw files if I want to make any big prints or if I get a great shot but hate the exposure/colors on the jpeg.

Also the ease of getting my photos is a big deal to me. The apps/interface varies widely between these cameras.

GRiii - Jpegs are fine but weakest among the 3 I think. The in camera raw developer is the best though, it actually shows updated image preview while making changes. The GR app to transfer photos to your phone just works. It is simple but great execution. I don't know if it ever has failed for me. Apparently there is a new GR app in the works, not sure what it will entail.

Zf - the snap bridge app seriously blows, I am not sure how such a big company like Nikon could have such a shitty app. It rarely connects to my camera reliably and when it does, the photo transfer usually fails. I have a current iPhone and firmware on everything so I am not really sure what the deal is, but from some quick searching I don't think I am alone. That said, the new Zf updates and integration with cloud sharing is incredible. I have my Zf connected to my Lightroom account, so in camera I can just select any images I like to "share to cloud" and as long as my camera is on wifi somewhere, these photos will quickly show up in Lightroom. You can set it up to do raw, jpeg, or both. I have it set to just jpeg and I am super happy with the Zf jpegs so far (I have not messed around with the nikon cloud recipes yet though, most of the ones I looked at seemed pretty gimmicky to me so far). I cannot overstate how awesome this is to just cloud share straight to Lightroom!

x100vi - obviously the jpeg king. The fuji app works pretty well. Similar to the Zf kinda, you can "tag" photos on the camera and then when you connect the app to the camera it will deliver those photos to your phone. It works very well and seems reliable to me so far. I can then upload from my phone photos app to Lightroom easily.
