Yes. Firmware v4.0 has much improved the high resolution SL3's AF subject detection and tracking capabilities. Frankly, I wasn't expecting this much real-world improvement and I am shooting with SL APO Primes which are not generally considered fast auto focus lenses. I guess I just didn't think Leica/Panasonic would be able to improve their AF/AI technology this much. Long time coming...but now it's here.
Yes, I finaly feel that except for the very fastest moving subjects like BIF the SL3 is the only AF system I need. It is a solid and reliable AF platform now.

Ok. Once again, we will agree to disagree because for me the M experience has really nothing to do with these but much more with the fact that I can use any camera from the M3 to the M11 and get the same "feel".
In fact, menu structure and naming is not something I use in the field, workflow is the same for any camera, Leica or not, sensor can be found in other brands, processor is nothing special and color changes from one digital M to the other.
Yep, I guess we see things very differently. I of course respect your view of things.
1) When I'm shooting lowlight/high iso environments with bright backlight objects, it takes the EVF quite a few seconds to meter back properly. The screen seems to freak out and go white for a bit then get back.
2) The focus peaking is not all that great for lowlight.
Both of these, I think, are firmware issues more than anything. I saw a comment on a YouTube video suggesting this EVF could be the same one in the Q3, so the 60Hz limitation could be updated via firmware in the future, albeit at the cost of battery life....Show more →
I've run the M-EV1 for a few months and I have a fake *conspiracy* theory that this white/freakout issue is more isolated to my Voigtlander 75 1.5. Perhaps, its the coatings or longer focal legnth? I recently purchased a 50mm Summilux ASPH, and I'm not really noticing this behavior as much with this lens and my 35mm Summilux ASPH.

To be honest I don't see your issue with Leica 21mm, 35mm, 50mm, or 75mm.
I use some settings on the EV1 that work for me. LCD -3 brightness and EVF-2 brightness. Try to adjust your EVF so that it mimics your computer monitor. Watch out going too high on SS as it will induce flickering under LED light sources. 1/250 or 1/500 work for me.
I wanted to get a Leica SL but my problem was weight being older I am more sentive and got my first hint of arthritis when digital came in. I like my M11 and My Ev 1 they are lighter and work well for me the 11 for 28- 50 lenses and the ev1 1 for wate 24 and 75 90 and 135. It works well I totally hope some of you younger guys will go for lighter cameras as someone who had been a working photographer my entire adult life I strongly urge you guys to get lighter the weight will get to you some day.
After shooting more and more with the Nikon Zf and its amazing focus confirmation system with manual focus lenses, I keep feeling Leica missed a huge opportunity not implementing something similar on the EV1, especially since the Leica M system is dedicated around MF shooting...
Technically, it seems very doable considering Leica already has the AF software knowledge (Panasonic) and experience from the SL series. If a future EV1 body had on sensor PDAF, real time subject detection, and Eye AF detection, I honestly do not think that the lack of electronic communication from M lenses would even matter that much. Leica M bodies do not need focal length reporting for IBIS anyway.
What makes the Nikon implementation so good is the confidence that the subject is in focus without having to rely on magnification or peaking which imo changes the experience. To me, it feels similar to using a rangefinder patch, except more accurate and far less dependent on camera calibration or lens alignment tolerances.
I really think something like this would make a lot more photographers gravitate toward an EVF Leica M style camera. Perhaps Leica is considering this for the EV1 II?

Hey Fred-
This is what most of us have been hammering Leica on- After shooting with Canon or Nikon (Canon's system is even better) its laughable to go back to Leica and use the EV1!!!
Step up and disrupt your business or don't. The EV1 is identical to what you can have with the M11 and the Leica Visoflex 2-
This was a lackluster release with nothing being brought to the table- I could argue the only thing Leica did was remove capability from the EV1 by removing the patch-

After hearing about the Techart AF adapter for M lenses on a Z from a friend, I ended up trying the Z5II and can't stop using it with my M mount lenses even though I have the EV1. I am also happy with the 24MP files which remind me of an improved M10P.
Question Fred, I did not see which adapter you regularly use to mount M lenses on your Zf.

Because the Zf has IBIS, it needs to know what focal length is being used, so the adapters have to be chipped to pass that information through. That's what I meant when I said this would not really be an issue for the Leica EV1 since it does not have internal stabilization anyway.
After trying many adapters, I ended up settling on two simple solutions:
1) TTArtisan 6-bit adapter. It's very light at only 50g and automatically detects focal length, and even aperture used, from coded Leica M lenses. For non-coded lenses, you can manually select the focal length on the adapter itself. Very simple and effective.
2) Since I also adapt a lot of Sony E and Canon EF lenses, I went with the Megadap ETZ21 Pro+. It's incredibly thin at only 4mm and weighs just 40g. I can adapt AF or MF E-mount lenses directly, then use stacked adapters for other mounts like M-E or EF-E. That way I can keep using my existing adapters, including close focus ones, and only needed to buy the Megadap smart adapter. The clever part is the Megadap lets you manually input focal length directly through the Zf camera menu.
The Techart TZM-02 AF adapter is also great, but it is definitely on the heavier side at ~160g and bulkier than most other adapters. The advantage is you get AF with M lenses, which is impressive, and I do use one on my Sony body. But, what I find most interesting about the Zf is not really the AF side, but the manual focus confirmation system when using my M lenses.

The EV1 is still pretty cool in its own way. It feels like a compact Leica M without needing a bulky Visoflex attached to the top. For people who already tend to rely on the Visoflex most of the time anyway, it honestly becomes a very solid alternative.
...I agree the focusing approach is starting to feel a bit archaic compared to what Canon and Nikon are doing now. Leica absolutely can do more there, but I'll be honest, I'm pretty attached to the Nikon Zf style manual focus confirmation and 24MP is enough for me because I don't crop much in post. For me at least, the Leica M still belongs in the 'pure rangefinder' lane, and I do not really see it replacing that experience in my head -- at least with the current EV1 implementation.
OMG. So many choices without the red dot to do what the EV1 does but better. Sony, nikon canon. Like Fred said, the af confirmation on the zf is amazing. I use my zf and its hard to beat. But, its not a rangefinder. Neither is the Ev1. Thec a7c is closer to the feel of a rf but with superior features to the ev1. I would not spend a dime on an ev1 simply because it has nothing to offer as a rf camera and the alternative do the same and much more. Now, there are those who will justify the price and limited functionality of the ev1 simply because of the red dot and it is a cool looking camera. More power to you. I would rather spend the 8 or 9k on glass and use it on my zf or m11.
Now, when leica makes ad 3d tracking eye detect focus confirmation I will consider a used one 😀 but not till then.
And that's my rant for the day.
Oh wait. You can also get af with m glass and the right adapter. Quirky, but still works.
