A7RV, 400-800 + Viltrox 2x. Took over a LOT of photos this week but not a big keeper rate with the 2x on the A7RV. I noticed a significantly higher hit rate on my A1 mk1.
My best one, will post more later with the unprocessed raw so you can get a feel for what the 2x does.
BUT, if you need 1600mm and don't intend to crop after, it aint toooooooo bad.

You are a brave man! I won't even use the 400-800 with the 1.4TC, just too dim for me. The picture doesn't look bad at all.

Appreciate that haha. It was a real, real struggle, under poor conditions most of the time but I think there is SOME promise... again, if you really need 1600mm. All the stars must align for you to get good photos. Here are some shots in a flickr albumb and google drive album, if anyone wants to peep some pixels. I was using a monopod, not a good tripod.
Here are some bare lens shots, mix of A7RV and A1 mk1. Prefer how the A1 handles the 400-800. I thought the superior IBIS would really show itself with the RV, but the faster AF of the A1 made the most important difference, for me anyway. The keeper rate was SIGNIFICANTLY better on the A1. User error?
Anyway, the 400-800 in a good setting can be very sharp. I have some shots where I nearly ran out of pixels before resolving power. Not sure anymore about F8 vs F9, both seem sharp at times, but I still lean to F9 producing more consistently sharp photos.
Eastern Phoebe. Tiny bird. Google says 5.5 - 6.5 inches tall. I'm confident I could lure one in to eating out of my hand, tho they probably prefer the bugs they slaughter all day. They are fun to watch.

Viltrox 2x at 1600mm. Tons of atmosphere distorting the shot, but I'm still convinced this thing has promise come winter when the skies are clearer. Didn't notice a difference between a cropped 800mm shot vs a 1600mm shot with the 2x. Cranked up the texture in LR. You can tell it's not very sharp.

It's there but most people probably wouldn't notice it - I won't be giving up my A9iii any time soon though since I am not a fan of the distortion on the A1/A1ii images for some types of shots.
