Unbelievable skill shown in these shots by both the pilots and photog. Nicely done, Douglas.

Honestly some of the best air show shot's I've seen in a long long time. Nice work!
I snagged a Viltrox 2x to play around with. Hopefully it plays nice for some stacking lunar shots. I hear that's about all it's really good for at 1600mm

Great Thunderbird shots Douglas!
I particularly like the 7th crossing shot. The angle is very unique. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten one from that particular angle

Thank you Robert! The 7th crossing shot in the post is actually NOT the typical "opposing pass" where two jets fly from opposite directions. It's the "cross over break", see diagram below. The Blue Angels have that too. The two jets fly from behind and over the spectators, then cross over pretty far away from the spectators. The second picture is the next frame, uncropped. You now see why I need 800mm.

Thank you very much! I wonder how the Viltrox 2X TC performs vs the Sony's, which I use on my 300 GM 95% of the time. I saw some nice results from the Viltrox posted by Alex Phan. I may try the Sony 2X TC on my 400-800 for fun.
It's crazy the massive French Airbus A400M Atlas went almost inverted. The curvy propellers are interesting.

Ah…I see! Thanks for the diagram!
I do remember seeing this maneuver, but I’m usually panning as they go overhead. Then, as I turn my body back to face forward and I always miss the actual cross! 😄

I know exactly what you are saying. What I do is to zoom out to put them in the view finder when they are approaching from behind, and swing my body to track them once they pass overhead, I may lose them in the view finder but they cross each other pretty far away from the spectators so I still have time to put them back in the view finder if I lose the tracking. The real tricky shot is when they do this crossover during a heritage flight. If you want to use slow shutter speed for the prop plane, you are taking a very high risk that the crossover shots will be just a blurry mess,

Despite my initial misgivings I think this is a bit of a step up from the 200-600+1.4TC. Particularly in terms of contrast - things seem a bit cleaner.

No sign of the sharpness issue anymore.
Glad your experience is getting better over time. Enjoy!

Good tip! I’ll give it a try!
As far as this maneuver being done during the heritage flight, I usually have the AEL button programmed to override my prop plane settings. I set it to Manual, 1/4000, Zone AF, max aperture, auto ISO, AF-On
I only use it for emergencies though. If I have time, I’ll usually just set the desired settings using the dials. Most airshows, I never even touch the AEL button. But it’s there if I need it
