It was inevitable. It also makes the Fujifilm Eterna cam look all the dumber.

I'm taking this back after seeing Fuji's Eterna announcement along with that 32-90 PZ...I did not respect your game, Fuji-san.

I'm very curious if that 32-90 will get AF and a non cine housing.

It would be pretty cool and compelling if so. Competing directly with the new Hassy 35-100.

I have a few questions about the Zr but a main one, as someone not familiar with video.
The Zr does appeal to me for what I understand is the in camera treatment that can give some color grading and kinda cinematic output from the body alone.
I saw a bunch of reviews and even here it’s not much talked about.
Am I wrong to think that is peculiar to that camera as opposed to my Zf for example?

Yes, Nikon and Red have developed some capabilities specifically to answer those kind of needs, as I wrote above;

- there are new cinematic user modes in which the camera selects the settings to achieve some types of results (slow motion,...). Sounds great for content creators who are not (yet) video experts
- there are new RED video picture controls that enable to apply a red look in camera for those not shooting raw, this sounds great for users upgrading from their phones who want to upload some footage immediately to social media

Please watch the Nikon Europe ZR intro YouTube video by Ricci for more details.

Cheers,
Bernard

It has to be a phenomenal lens to beat 45-100/4 lens which is ma favourite gf zoom lens currently. Considering
The price over the 45-100, 32-90 should be exceptional and its focal length should be a bit more versatile for me as well.
But the weight…..

What is most impressive to me is speed of operation in newer Z camera's. They turn on in a blink, they switch modes instantly, this is such an underrated quality of life feature on Nikon side compared to Sony cameras which I used for 5+ years. You can actually turn off the camera to save battery life as newer bodies turn on instantly.

I am itching to see 4" high res super bright screen in person, body looks clutter free.

Nikon also went super aggressive on pricing, generally video centric camera's tend to be more expensive than their photo centric counterparts. eg. A7IV < FX2, A7SIII < FX3, A6700 < FX30. Here Nikon went in opposite direction.

Also Nikon now officially endorse adapting third party lenses on ZR official product page. There were so many conspiracies recently after firmware fiasco that Nikon intentionally broke compatibility. Here Nikon is fully embracing versatility of Z mount.

A Growing Ecosystem

Z mount versatility.

The Nikon Z mount is the widest and shallowest full-frame mirrorless lens mount in the world. That means it’s also among the most adaptable, capable of supporting countless Nikkor and third-party lenses.

I actually am very curious about this camera. Not so much for videography but I think it may have its place in underwater photography. Since using Z8, I basically use LCD screen 100% of the time as I dont need to have my eye glue to the EVF all the time and give me more awareness of the surrounding and able to place camera at more various angles than using EVF. Sometimes it is also easier to approach macro subject when I don't need to glue my eyes to OVF like during DSLR day.
This big screen would be a lot of fun. I have a friend who uses external monitor in its own housing with his gear but I don't want to go to that bulky route.

I'm also interested in this for still only. I do a lot of hand held (ICM) photography and was wondering if this would be better because of less rolling shutter.

It has more rolling shutter in still photography than Z8/9 and also more than cameras using a reasonably modern mechanical shutter.

Zr/Z63 are partially stacked sensors so rolling shutter effect is limited, not as good as Z8, but much better then Zf/Z6

I will be interested in it for still photography as well. It can actually be a beautiful street cam with 26/28/40mm lenses.

After years capturing audio I was delighted when Sound Devices released their sound recorders with 32-bit float recording. It made it easy to get perfect gain control. I still needed to synch the recorded audio to the recorded video. With the ZR this sync does not need to be done and I can often do away with the sound recorder and timecode generator and cables and battery packs. ENG will be likely buyers for this camera as they can do away with the sound guy.

It would be nice if Nikon released a tiltable external viewfinder for the Zr, I think I read the hot shoe would allow something like that?
I still view this camera as something quite proper for an amateur and such an accessory would be satisfying.

Yes, the conclusion being get that the Nikon NR is worth considering even if you currently shoot with a Sony FX3.

Indeed. This is indeed a very important point.

There is a lot of proximity between Nikon and Sony and it is clearly a win win to enable the usage of Sony lenses on Nikon bodies. I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with an official adapter supported by both companies at some point. It's kind of ridiculous for 2 Japanese companies whose headquarters are 4.6 km away from each others to rely on some Chinese adapters.

Either way, Canon must start to feel very lonely out there.

Cheers,
Bernard

Less slippery to hold than an iPhone, and better image stabilization than an FX-3, - I guess Nikon is hoping the Zr will draw in some of the Selfie and Skateboarding crowd before they're old enough to realize its limitations.

Funny, I think you’re too old to realize “the selfie and skateboard crowd” is a massive part of any camera manufacturer’s business model in 2025.

Morten Hilmer has an hour, twenty-two-minute review of the ZR up, covering 19 days of field use. Not going to give away the conclusion ... just going to say it looks like I'm going to buy a ZR now.

I just ordered mine together with the Smallrig cage.

Great time to be a Z mount hybrid shooter!
