A7RM6 400-800 @800mm

Wasn’t really ready for this because when does a falcon ever launch directly at you !

Pretty sure the asymmetry of the wings is from slow readout speed and not just the slight angle.

Sea Eagle Crop - if you like cropping this is the camera for you

Duck hunt - missed the action though… again…

Funny how they vary their pattern just enough so you’re never quite in the right spot.

Getting interested with the upcoming release of a new RX10 model. Had it in 2017 for a few weeks but decided to return and instead purchase the FE 100-400. Haven't really looked at the evaluation results back then as that was the year I got laid off (eng'g job going to Asia/China). Anyway, fully retired now and getting older wanting to look into less bulky one system for travel with birding capability. Results not that bad with only one major issue - DOF. Some newly processed samples:

Even with back side look, face/eyes were still ok due to that small sensor DOF. Background was terrible but with some PS blurring steps (like below last image), it could be improved a bit.

A7RM6 400-800

Lots of vertical room - these are downsampled to 4K vertical. Rolling shutter distortion appears to be a non-issue again, despite shooting in lossless compressed.

Poor light and slow lens though - one really needs the 600 f/4 to make the most of this sensor I think.

Oops - not sure if it is possible to prevent images from being scaled up horizontally - so best shrink the page width when viewing.

Geoff, great series. I referenced some you said a few years ago, but you didn't see it, I'm guessing. Do you still use half-press shutter button focus for BIF? I'm assuming you use pre-capture on BIF.

Thanks

Yes, I still use shutter button to activate AF. Although I have back buttons set to do different AF modes and I have those activate AF also when pressed even without the shutter pressed.

Most of the time I have precapture ON for BIF. Sometimes I turn it off. I have the C1 button set to toggle it on/off.

I’ve also been trying a slightly different method to control when precapture is active without having to toggle it on/off.

If you go into precapture settings and turn it to Shutter button Only then you can setup a back button(s) to activate AF and that won’t trigger precapture to start as long as you don’t also half-press the shutter. Then you can just fully press the shutter and it won’t have buffered any precapture frames. When you do want precapture you can half-press the shutter at the same time as pressing your back button. I have been using this for my bird on a perch button so it isn’t precapturing all the time for just simple perched shots.

Thank you. I appreciate the additional information about pre-capture, as I haven't attempted to use it yet. My buttons are the same with the back button for static shots.

Trying out some backyard natural light bee photography. Shocked how sharp 70-200 II macro is, it isn't really any softer than the 100 GM that I have here from what I can see. Both using 1.4 tc. Also nice to not have to risk getting stung at 100mm.
