p.1 #1 · Corona Beach sunset

A few Sundays ago, sensing the potential for a vibrant sunset, I made a spontaneous trip to Corona del Mar near Newport Beach, a familiar location I've photographed numerous times. I began shooting from an elevated vantage point, aiming to capture the light illuminating the rock formations to the left as the sun dipped below the horizon. While the initial colors were decent, the scene truly transformed when a small break appeared in the dense cloud cover, revealing stunning sun rays. I quickly repositioned to capture this phenomenon, needing to step back slightly to avoid the direct glare of the sun. Though the sunset's colors didn't reach their full potential, the dramatic rays created a truly special moment. I've included a couple of images from this outing and welcome any comments or critiques.

Corona Beach - God's Rays

Corona Beach - light it up!

The hard edged rocks are a great contrast to the softer sky. They compliment each other, both being of interest.

The rush of warmth in #2 is delightful, can feel that golden light , just beautiful!
Nice balance of all elements in both👍🏼

Karl, thanks for your detailed feedback. The first image was shot from a higher vantage point and the light on the rock was short lived. Noticing some nice colors, I quickly moved to another spot for image #1 but has to backup to avoid the sun peaking thru the clouds but I enjoyed the rays and patterns in the clouds.

Thanks Doug, yes, definitely lucked out on the sky striations. Just wish I would have been at that exact location earlier as the sky was looking much better with some gorgeous colors.

The second image is wonderful, made so by the splash of light on the rock on the top left. The bright spot on the top right could be tamed or Generative AI-filled.

Thank you
This location is always very nice to photograph I just feel that if the first image was photographed about 5 minutes earlier then I would have captured peak colors.

Thanks Rajan, appreciate your thoughtful observation. I couldn't change the image with the suggested fix.

Thank you, I captured the drama in the sky but I still think by backing up to avoid sun kind of messed up my composition.

Thank you and I agree, that is what I was trying to emphasize in this capture.
