p.2 #3 · New release Sigma 300-600mm f/4 Full frame
Wasn't too long ago that I and many others were handholding the EF 600II and Nikon 600E FL. People marvelled at how lightweight those 600/4 lenses were. This is the same weight as those lenses.
Sure we have become used to much lighter 600/4 lenses over the past 5 years but at a $6K price point this lens is surely something for many to consider to get them that f/4 light gathering.
If one can get on with the weight, the 15FPS and the lack of TC support then it is a great value. Not something I'm looking for but I'm sure will be good for many.
This lens is probably more interesting paired with the new Panasonic S1RII: 44MP, 40FPS, Precapture.

Wow, that sensor is interesting.
I wonder why Sony didn't put it in A1II ...
Looks neat. Sigma going the Apple route with limited controls and a clean aesthetic. Only one control point, no hot shoe, no SD card slot (built-in SSD), no mechanical shutter, no IBIS, no EVF. Milled out of a single block of aluminum. I've always had a soft spot for Sigma's weirdo cameras.

Wow, this camera is a thing of beauty.
It will sell like hot cakes, even if it's a mess usability-wise...

I remain honestly curious how Sony/Sigma implement and enforce the 15 fps and no TC restrictions. Would they be implemented through camera and/or lens FW, at least the fps part? With the TC restriction is it just that Sigma is forbidden to make TCs with Sony E mounts?

Although the 300/2.8 isn't a zoom, I imagine the weight difference is substantial if you use it as a 300/2.8 + 600/5.6 combo, and the cost is roughly the same. There is a convenience factor of the zoom but lugging around a 9lb lens just doesn't seem fun.

The lack of TC support really stings on this one. A 300-600mm f4 with TC support would almost be perfect for my needs. Sure, it's a bit heavy but I would use it for short hand held work or tripod work. I can use the 300-600mm when weight and size does not matter and use my 200-600mm when it does.
Unfortunately, as someone who really needs more than 600mm of reach, the 300-600 with no TC support will be out. Going to wait and see what happens with the rumored Sony 400-800, but it's sounding more and more likely a Nikon 800mm PF will be in my future. If I go with the Nikon 800mm I know I will end up getting a second Z body sooner rather than later, and if I get a new E mount telephoto lens I know I will end up getting a newer Sony body. I have to wonder how many body sales Sony might be missing out on due to the TC and 15FPS limitations.

Am I wrong?
It depends on if you want 2 focal lengths or 300 I guess.

Gym membership not included! Yeah, it looks great and at a great price, but being slightly longer and 25% heavier than the 600/4 makes me question all Sigma's "handheld" comments, unless you have arms and shoulders the size of a weightlifter. Then again, I guess anything can be handheld briefly before one's shoulders collapse!
Also makes me wonder if this marvel of engineering will overcome the max-15fps inertia that stops some people buying into Sigma.
25% heavier sure, but it also comes with the massive flexibility of 300-599 that the FE 600 doesn't.
The price on this lens is really surprising. In a good way.

The BF design is clearly aimed at phone users who want to step up their photography to the next level. They won’t miss the EVF as they’ve never had one, and the one-handed approach to changing settings will be familiar.

Yea too bad on the 15 fps capping. Seems like without that limit, and assuming the IQ/AF are good, it'd be a great sports field shooters tool (assuming you had a monopod) for those that don't shoot at venues that often require f/2.8.
