One of the videos I watched made the not unreasonable point that the SL3 is 'yet another FF mirrorless camera' and, in this regard, not fundamentally different to other FF brands. Competition in the market is fierce. The M and Q lines, on the other hand, are unique, which can justify the price premium. As a value proposition, the SL series is perhaps less of a value proposition. But, then again, there is that Leica brand ....
I have all the cameras they’d be talking about and would choose the SL3 over all of them. There’s no magic or massive IQ differences. But the build, UI and menus are in a different league. If those matter to you it might be worth it. Certainly not for some. Absolutely is for me.

OK, seems OK to me with R lens. Will try an M lens tomorrow.
"Ok" does describe it. Reminds me of the older 3.X million dot EVFs when in magnified live view. But the SL2-S is just hands down better. Never had a camera that had magnified live view as sharp and high res looking as magnified playback before. If you really want to see what I'm talking about, put your SL3 on a tripod and use max magnification, then take the photo. Play back the photo and zoom in all the way and now see how much sharper it looks in the EVF – it's like night and day versus live view.
I'm hopeful that Leica will fix this. There's no reason the better processor of the SL3 and SL3-S can't handle a very high res feed in magnified live view.

Do you feel the same about the Lieca Q3-43 in magnified live view? If you haven't tired yourself do you know of anyinfo out there?
Thanks,

I've not looked into the Q3/Q3-43 magnified live view, but I've not heard anything bad about it. Even if magnified live view dropped the resolution a bit, the sharpness of the Q lens probably still makes it easy to see when focus is achieved.

Gordon
Hi Gordon, I agree with you. Life is short. Digital cameras passed the quality-of-image test years ago for me. Ergonomics and the sublime feeling of a wonderfully made camera are very important. I have an M9-P (that Fred sold me). I also have a modded A7R-II (Kolari UT mod), another of Fred's former cameras! I prefer the M9-P despite all its putative shortcomings. I simply enjoy the camera, and, for me, the images are more than adequate.

Still hoping for an EVF-M (or Q with exchangeable M-mount). Optimized for small M lenses, no need for AF, maybe with video like in the M240 series, and good internal EVF instead of rangefinder and in the same for factor like a modern M or Q camera body. This - at least for me - would blow all the SL cameras out of the water for me. And I would keep my traditional film and digital rangefinder M bodies even with such hybrid camera as addition.

@HDMesa
Just a thought about resolution while in manual mode and magnification. I use BWHC (i.e. B&W) when using EVF viewing and to my eye the resolution was not impaired yesterday. Have not yet tried it with an M lenses, but will get to it later today.
JTMMC, OK to me means no impairment to EVF usage/resolution.
Just tried my M 75/1.4 in M mode with focus magnification. Same as with the R lens and no problem for me.
HDMesa what adapter were you using on your SL3 that you let go?

Those are from Leica.
I saw some of them on Leica's site, but on FM if you mouse over them it says copyright Fred Miranda. Leica wouldn't give the copyright away, just license the photos usage.

It is good, as I see it, that Leica is continuing to offer a 24MP camera in the SL-series. I like having the choice, and, am glad that I will not have to try to hunt for an SL2-S, when I decide to finally acquire an SL-series camera, perhaps later this year.

Did you compare the max magnified live view with max magnified playback yet? It should be a huge difference in sharpness/resolution. If your magnified live view looks as good as playback, then either they fixed it in the last firmware update or it's an issue with using 3rd party dummy adapters like I use.

In some degree ... the SL series is the culmination of the S series, the M series and the Q series.
S level APO optics (L alliance affords lesser options)
M series compatibility (sensor stack, precision adaptation)
Q EVF / AF / Battery / Menu / Workflow
That might be a bit of a stretch for some folks, but the SL coordinates well with the M and the Q ... in ways that "yet another FF mirrorless camera" does not, from a systematic ethos.
Taken as a "stand alone" camera, it is easy to make comparison to other choices. OTOH, if one is seeking to understand where it sits relative to the "differentiated" offerings in the M and Q, it aligns and integrates with them better than other brands can / do.
To some degree, the Sl series starting with sl2 is the culmination of the Panasonic S1, and S5II cameras. I don't understand why Panasonic won't buy Leica.
that said I love the design of the SL and have the Sl2 and Sl3! ...Show more →

That was why I asked about your adapters. Whenever Leica makes an adapter I use them irregardless of price since especially with m lenses it could make a difference.
Just checked, my playback looks no better than when looking at magnified LV.

I wish they would put the 24MP SL2-S sensor in an M11 body. By that, I mean I would like USB C charging and the larger capacity battery. I would have kept my M10-R but the charging and larger battery were big pluses for me which is why I got the M11-P. The extra MP's are ok but not really needed most of the time. Yes, I know I can shoot at a lower MP but I really like the performance and rendering of the SL2-S sensor.

Sounds like you need an SL2-s and an M-L adapter...

Sometimes using the Leica adapter can bite you in the bum – re: the recent loss of magnification with the M-Adapter L on the joystick push that was only recently fixed in firmware (worked fine on dummy adapters). It's a crapshoot with Leica as always.
Unless you have a dummy adapter to test it with, you also can't assume it's not fixed for those, too, in the last firmware update. Maybe someone with both adapters and an SL3 could test it.
The biggest downside of the Leica adapter is the lack of macro functionality. A macro adapter really transforms the experience of using M lenses with the SL cameras, and IMO is worth the loss of 6-bit code reading. Further, some dummy macro adapters have an adjustable infinity hard stop, meaning one can calibrate them so that the M lenses hit infinity at the hard stop on the SL bodies.
