p.7 #1 · Sony A1 II availability ?

Hello,
I'd like to know if I'm the only one experiencing dust problems with my brand-new Sony A1 MK II. I received mine with dust particles trapped between the sensor and the protective glass. 🤬In other words, it can't be cleaned and i was able to see them at F5/6. Personally, I find this unacceptable. And we're talking about a product that costs 10K with CAD taxes. 🫣
The other similar problem was with the 200-600mm. I've read several comments of the same kind and I think people should complain to Sony, whose quality control seems very deficient... Or we could suggest

I assume you will send it back? Also where did you read about similar problems?
What was the problem with the 200-600 - dust inside?

I am always skeptical about posts like this one. You registered 13 years ago. Your first post was from who knows when and it is not even listed anymore. Your profile lists Canon as your gear. Then after so many years without any activities whatsoever, you showed up in the Sony forum with your second post claiming those issues. Hmm, okay... 😜. Are you actually Pierre as you purported to be?

Are you positive it is in the sensor stack? Seems rather surprising and should be hard to judge visually. I'd expect the sensor-stack to be manufactured in a clean room and even the size & height of e.g. a hair may already be enough to tilt things visibly, as well as render any pixel below completely unusable. So if the particle really is inside the sensor stack I'd absolutely return the camera.

The other similar problem was with the 200-600mm. I've read several comments of the same kind and I think people should complain to Sony, whose quality control seems very deficient... Or we could suggest that Sony provide head and shoulder to all its employees...🤔
That is a different animal and fairly common. Even if you had no visible dust inside, it would be a question of time till you do. Even worse for the more common extending zooms. It is however way less likely to have a visible impact. AFAIK lens repair facilities do not even bother with clean rooms, just keep things reasonably clean.

Yes. I agree, Joshua. It seems to me that after every major Sony camera introduction there is always a poster with no history and a weird story about some terrible defect in the Sony camera and the Sony production process. If it's real, let's see a picture of his A1 II and a sample showing the problem at f5.6.

I had a very similar issue on my first copy of the A1 II, showed up only when shooting close up and around F8 or higher though. Does it suck when it happens? Sure but to Sony (and The Camera Store's) credit they got me a replacement body in less then a week and I was able to keep the first copy while I waited so I was very happy with the outcome.

Always check and test new equipment and get anything exchanged during the return period. Sometimes you get unlucky and get a defective copy, can happen with any brand.

Well it's the same sensor as the A1 so any issues with dust inside the layers could have shown up with the older model as well

Not that it's the same but last year we had a Sony Venice cinema camera that had dust in a sensor, and that was a $100k body. Things do happen and slip through QC at times.

How did that get resolved?

The first AC reported it during camera prep and it was replaced. We don’t purchase cameras and lens packages, we rent.

I also had this issue with a brand new A1 II having dust in-between the sensor and the protective glass. I recommend anyone getting one to give the sensor a good look because it definitely seems to be something that happened during manufacturing.

What's your issue with first posts? Have you even touched an A1 ii? If you want to blow off the advice, go for it but I'd suggest other people give the sensor a check.

Is it easy to see with the naked eye?
Do you just confirm it is under the cover glass by trying a cleaning and it doesn't come off?
I will check mine tonight.

I found it by bringing the sensor closer to a light and moving it around to slightly different angles. There were several tiny spots and they were definitely noticeable. I might still have the photo of the sensor I can upload.

I sent it in to Sony for repair and this was what they wrote:

Reason for Service:
multiple particles seen behind the glass filter covering the sensor

Technician Findings:
Suggest replacement Imager Unit Assembly

Internal debris in sensor

To Be Repaired:
Imager Unit Assembly will remove the internal debris

Unfortunately I don't think they will be able to avoid it. It might not be a 1:1 increase but I wouldn't be surprised if we see prices jump by 15% across the board.

They will most definitely not eat the tariff and sell at a loss. For starters I expect they will cancel any planned deliveries that would be affected and search for ways to avoid them. Like everybody else. Meantime this might mean better availability of the A1II in Europe.

Wouldn't that simply make the price in US close(r) to EU price with VAT ...
