Obviously, Sony overestimated the demand for the A9 III, which is more of a niche camera while they underestimated the demand for the A1 II that appeals to a significantly wider audience. Duh!

What makes you believe they overestimated on the A9III? We can't be sure they underestimated the A1II or just had manufacturing delays outside of their control. It's 100% speculation at this point. I for one would find it amusing if the constrained supply is due to high demand, because the universal response to the announcement on the Internet was "MEH, I won't buy one" and yet here we are now with people complaining they can't buy one.

The supply of the A9 III was plentiful after the camera became available. All pre-orders were filled in the first batch and then the camera was readily available everywhere afterwards. Yes, we don't know why the A1 II is in short supply now and it was more speculation on my part that Sony underestimated the demand of that camera.

I didn't really keep track of the A9III supply after I got mine. I think that was a sleeper camera where a lot of people poo-pooed it based on pixel count and supposed shortcomings of the sensor, but those who have it and use it have realized both are mostly irrelevant in day to day use. I know I was in the first camp, but changed my tune after using it on a a big trip not long after I got it. Now I still find myself reaching for it all of the time, even with an A1II.
Whatever the reason there is definitely a shortfall of A1II's.
Has anyone had any updates on a new shipment or received a camera out of a 2nd batch?
I haven't heard anything from my dealer. I sent an email a week ago and they haven't even replied.
My dealer usually meets with Sony every Tuesday.

Mine says...no idea on the next shipment.
I'm headed to southern AZ next week for work + fun so I'll finally be able to put my new A1II through some more vigorous testing. Last week it barely got to 15F every day so not only were the birds not very active, I also had no interest in freezing to photograph the same 6-7 species. At least southern AZ will have some hummingbirds in the mix as well!

No word for me either. My local store had a Sony demo day where I was able to go and handle the A1 II in person, and I was ready to buy on the off chance that there was one available, but the Sony rep told me it would be about 2 months. I was told early February by another dealer. Long story short, I don't think anyone has any idea...

It's baffling to me that a camera that uses the same chassis, screen mechanism, and sensor of in production and existing cameras is having supposedly supply chain issues like we're in the height of COVID again.

Sony warned back in November '24 I think, there would be production delays due high demand and of course some on-line described the announcement as a marketing ploy. BTW, I read on PetaPixel that such an announcement is a gov't requirement for Japanese Co when there will reproduction delays.
OTOH, an update from Sony when they expect they will start shipping to market again might be welcome. Looks like there are customers with money to spend Now!
did they give an estimated fulfillment date for your spot? I called my local camera store and there was still 37 people ahead of me and they didn't have an estimated fulfillment date for me so I canceled my preorder.
I'll just grab a used A1 for ~4k. I'd love to have the screen and pre-capture of the ii, but I'll pick up the A1i now and wait for the ii's to get regular stock and trade in and upgrade when it's not such a hassle. I still have a A7iv and A7Rv, but getting more into concert and wildlife photography I need the blackout free shooting, silent shutter, and higher fps.

It may not be a marketing ploy…but it may have more to do with limited production of $7,000 cameras than “surprising & unprecedented demand.“ 😂
Nikon and Canon say the same thing every time they release a camera… so is it really unprecedented?
How can there really be a market that is shrinking every year, while also generating unprecedented demand?
