p.6 #1 · Sony A1 II availability ?

Exactly the same mistake I made.... and I did it so shortly before a major trip. As you know, I ended up taking my trusted, "classic" A1 on that trip and phew, it performed well while there. The A1 II promises to perform better than the original in certain aspects although the IQ remains the same but at this point, I am not sure about selling my original A1 or keeping it as a backup and sell my A7r V instead. Time will tell, I guess.

Did you wind up ordering an A1II ??

The opportunity to snag one up at a (slight) discount came up and my resistance level was low. I succumbed...😉 and received mine last Wednesday.

What stands out to me is the pre-capture. I missed quite a few good shots in South and Central America without that. I haven't had the chance to take advantage of that feature though so far. The other improvements, such as better subject recognition, more customizable AF areas, better IBIS, and the addition of another custom button seem minor but they add up, making the A1 II indeed a better camera alright. Most of those improvements are geared more towards wildlife or bird photography though...

Resistance is futile, Joshua.. I will get one in a few months. I will be selling either the A7RV or the A1, most likely the A7RV, I will lose maybe $200 selling the A7RV but will lose over $1200 selling the less than a 1-year old A1. I pre-ordered the 400-800, I think this is only the second time I pre-ordered a lens or camera, the first one is the 200-600, I think.

Well, it was low enough to begin with though, I admit... I have been pondering which camera I should sell. Probably, it will be the "classic" A1 😢.

Zero regrets selling the A7RV for the A1 II. It’s beautiful.

Considering selling the A1 for an A9 III to complement the A1 II.

Instead of classic, how about "oldie but goodie" A1

If you do any shooting where the speed matters and you don't mind fewer megapixels, the A9III is just amazing. Because all of the controls, AI AF etc. are identical to the new A1II body it's easy to switch between using the two.

Definitely good to hear that. Thanks for that feedback on the pairing.
So far loving the A1 II - particularly as a travel one body minimal lens solution.

Total overkill but so flexible. When pure speed is needed an A9 III sounds like the ticket.

Which store was it? I haven't been able to find one at any Canadian retailer and every one I contacted told me there is at least a 2-month wait for it.

I will certainly post findings after this weekend.
So far this morning I didn't test on much. It was able to identify the eye of a GHO lying down in her nest when one eye was visible and the other half blocked by the edge of the tree. Even when she closed her eyes. I quickly swapped over to the A1 and it couldn't recognize her at all.

Hi Geoff,

Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the new A1 II over the A1 when you’re ready to share your thoughts.

Hm, I just saw one posted FS on the B&S forum. FYI, I don't have any relation to the seller, just passing on the info...

Hello,
I'd like to know if I'm the only one experiencing dust problems with my brand-new Sony A1 MK II. I received mine with dust particles trapped between the sensor and the protective glass. 🤬In other words, it can't be cleaned and i was able to see them at F5/6. Personally, I find this unacceptable. And we're talking about a product that costs 10K with CAD taxes. 🫣
The other similar problem was with the 200-600mm. I've read several comments of the same kind and I think people should complain to Sony, whose quality control seems very deficient... Or we could suggest that Sony provide head and shoulder to all its employees...🤔

Outside of wildlife or bird photography, do you think precapture is a useful feature? I've never used it and I don't think it would add much to my photography, but maybe I'm wrong.

If there is really dust under the sensor cover, that's certainly unacceptable. You should exchange the camera, if possible.

Yes, although I don't do sport but it is also useful there. Maybe I should have said that it was geared more toward fast action photography and not only limited to bird/wildlife photography. And I read about another advantage of that feature is to capture lightning at night. As soon as you see the lightning strike, you trigger the shutter button with the pre-capture on and you actually capture images prior to that point, like 0.5 sec. Most of the time your reaction is lagging slightly behind the actual moment and that's when pre-captured comes in and that 0.5 sec helps. Can you do it without? Of course you can but the way I look at it, you basically save a lot of space in your card by targeting only the peak moments and of course you will also save a lot time of tediously deleting superfluous images.
