p.1 #1 · Analogue aF-1 - another new P&S camera

Just stumbled across this on Instagram. Haven't heard anything about it before so I thought I'd share.

If they can really hit the €399 price point that's pretty interesting, as is the 35mm f2.8 double-gauss lens. It looks like there won't be much in terms of manual control other than being able to turn the flash off.

Here’s an interview with one of the guys behind the project:

Pretty cool! And $339 if you are an early adopter.

Shutter speeds 4 sec - 1/1000.
Lidar AF
Shame no exp compensation. Most of my p&s cameras offer +1.5.

Will see if it actually makes it to production. And this makes Pentax look super lame with their $500 zone focus half frame camera. This camera actually looks like one of the Espios, or a Big Mini!

Agree a backlight compensation button with +1.5 / +2 stops would be very useful for a camera like this.

It probably has a leaf shutter so at least fill flash will be somewhat effective.

I also dislike not being able to set ISO manually. Usually I shoot Gold 200 at ISO 125 and HP5 at 800-1600… but I guess there are different cameras for that

The only P&S cameras that I have seen that you can manually set ISO are the really expensive ones.
The idea of this one is to be simple. And it is coming in at the price of a Yashica T4 (used) which pretty much is the same spec.

That’s very cool, but I still don’t understand why it looks like they all seem to start from scratch and why these cameras look so low tech compared to the ones of the 90s.
How much would it cost to make a Yashica T4 these days, they could even put some displays on those like 30 years ago, I heard that tech is quite cheap now.

Make it a Yashica T3 even it’s such a banger of a camera.

Permanent exposure compensation does the trick as well. The Minilux has that but I guess it’s also not exactly a cheap P&S 😅

I like that they added this feature to the Rollei AF35. But that camera has other limitations..

Anyway, I‘ve signed up to their newsletter and will follow this one closely. Will be interesting to see where we‘ll stand with new film cameras in mid 2025. Maybe Pentax will have announced their plans for the 2nd step of the film project by then, too.

Which features from the T3 / T4 are you missing? Sorry not too familiar with these models.

To me it looks like they were targeting the Olympus Mju with their design. I only have personal experience with the Mju 1 which has a very similar feature set to the Analogue aF-1: fixed 35mm lens, AF, flash & self timer options but otherwise fully automatic.

My complain is more about general design of these new film cameras, there is a langage in the shapes and features of point and shoot cameras and other, an history of photography. It really feels like some simplified versions of older cameras. A T4 or T3 have some beauty about them.
That camera is quite cool so it might not be the best place to rant about that subject because it’s a pretty exciting project that feels priced right.
Still I wonder how much it would cost today to redo some of the great point and shoot of yesteryears. The prices of most new projects are quite mind boggling.

Ah I see.

I think it looks pretty nice though. Very clean design, more of a modern take on classic P&S look.

With Ricoh/Pentax it seems a bit odd that they don’t just reuse some of their previous designs. But if you don’t have the technical drawings, it’s probably more efficient to start from scratch and bring your own ideas to the design.

My Pentax Espio 24 EW has permanent exp compensation +- 3 stops.

The ‘independant’ companies have to start from scratch as they never made these cameras before. And I think they are now using lidar AF as the previously modules are no longer available.

But a company like Pentax? To me it makes zero sense to introduce the weird zone focus half frame P17. They claim they did half frame to save money on film, but pretty much every lab charges double to dev/scan half frame! So the money is the same, but the quality is halved..

Also Pentax used to make excellent p&s cameras so they could have just gone to ebay (if they no longer had the blue prints), picked up an Espio, took it apart and replicated it. And even made it better where they could.

But no, instead we got a $500 zone focus half frame camera.

1/1000 vs 1/500 Rollei 35AF.
Both F2.8 and Lidar AF. Mint claimed their lens worked with old tech technician blablabla
but AF-1 almost half of the price.

Oh also AF-1 has 6 element vs Rollei 35AF 5 element.

The Rollei offers control over aperture / exposure, so its creative potential is much wider. But it seems quite rough around the edges for its price point..

The 6 element lens is quite interesting. Typically they are 4 element Tessar or 5 element Sonnar derivatives. The Nikon 35Ti and Leica Minilux have 6-element Planar-type lenses, but I doubt it will be as good as these

The 6 element lens is quite interesting - not sure if a Planar design was used in a P&S before? Typically they are Tessar or Sonnar derivatives. The Nikon 35Ti and Leica Minilux have 6-element Planar-type lenses, but I doubt it will be as good as these

If the AF-1's lens as good as Nikon 35Ti and Leica Minilux then I will pull my trigger for sure.

+- $400 does seem very reasonable for a new AF p&s film camera.

I think one reason the Rollei is so expensive is because that inherent design is just much more costly to make vs the much simpler form factor of the AF-1.

I think perhaps just maybe they could have come up with a better name than the Analogue AF-1. Pretty sure AF-1 has been used over and over and over again already.

Maybe the AnalOne? Ok, maybe not. Howzabout Ana1or AnaOne?

Someone needs to make a new P&S body that supports dropping in the T4 lens

And someone (well, TTartisan tbh) needs to make Tessar lenses in M mount. I don’t even mind if it’s a 35mm or 45mm.. They made the Trioplan and the Biotar, the Tessar would only be logical at this point

More important is whether this is real, where is that company and which traditional camera company is behind it?

I commented on their Youtube that a flash that defaults to off would be ideal, and they responded that it's on their list.
