p.1 #1 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

I'm quite satisfied with A7RIVa, however I'm planning to sell it and fund on a new A7CR. One reason is a size cut, I've never a big fan of DSLR style bodies, that bump on the top with eye cup often stuck when I want slide in or out of camera bag. It's not a huge deal, but sometimes annoying. A7RIV already not a big camera, but I can't ignore the fact when I pick the camera my small kids always noticed and become intimidated, however I have a Ricoh GRIIIx, and they barely notice when I stealth shooting them. I don't expect GR's stealthiness from A7CR but perhaps it's less obvious compared RIVa. Third reason is 26MP RAW option. 80% of time I don't need 60MP resolution, bit easier handling 26MP files.
I'm aware the following drawbacks:
-Worse EVF- I shoot 90% on LCD, yes I like that huge viewfinder and I'm bit concerned, however I was perfectly satisfied with A7III's EVF, as far I know A7CR's not mutch worse.
-Articulating screen: The thing I most afraid of. I like tilting screen, most time I shoot from waist level (I'm quite tall, and most time shooting my kids). I just need to pop up the screen from bottom with one finger.
-Battery life (never get beyond 50% with one battery, so it's not an issue for me).
-EFCS: I use full mechanic shutter when I shoot moving kids and want shallow DOF, 1-2% of my shots.
-Joystic: Barely using it, most time eye detect AF, or I just pick the point on screen.
-One SD card slot: It's obvious drawback, but I've never had card problem.

My biggest lens is 35GM, and use 20 1.8G and sometimes 75 1.8. I'm considering to buy a pancake (28 4.5) for small walk-around setup for replacing GRIIIx.

The question is who has and what is the expereince moving from A7RIV (or A7RV) to A7CR? Can you use to the viewfinder and articulating screen? Can you expereince the less intimidating factor? What is your opinion about size/weight cut?

p.1 #2 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

Hi,
There are a few things coming to mind reading your post. Most of them are highly personal and perhaps just shows how hard it is to get/give advice on stuff like this when communicating with somebody you don't know who it is and at a distance. To that kind of anonymous as well...

My experience is that people always notice when you start photographing them. The only close to "stealth" photography and kids I have seen working involves cell phones. Your kids will probably notice an A7C as much as your A7R. I'm not sure at all there is anything to gain there.
It's probably better just to ignore that they notice you and keep shooting, similar to street photography.

There is no doubt the A7C series camera slip in and out of bags very much easier. Recently having moved away from the A7CR to the A1 I had to rearrange the padding in my satchel bag to avoid the hump and new bottom plate from getting stuck when trying to quickly get the camera out of the bag.

90% of the time need to flip up the LCD with one finger? Are you hell bent on using your camera that way? If so you can scrap the idea about switching to the A7CR.
You can however ask yourself if the habit can be changed. How often is it really necessary? When can you accept to be slowed down for a second or two?

The EVF... It's fine and a matter of getting used to. I like a big nice viewfinder as much as the next guy. I liked my Olympus OM-4 viewfinder for example. But really: the EVF is for composing and checking some settings and metering values. As you can trust the AF this is not a problem. When shooting in a slower manual mode you enlarge the focus point and the "problem" is gone. The viewfinder problem is largely overblown in my experience/opinion.

Slow sensor can be a real problem. That depends on your shooting style and wide open in the sun to get the shallow DOF has never been a problem for me. I live in a dark and moody part of the Europe. I have mounted a polarizer a couple of times and solved the problem that way. Or use an ND filter. Switch to electronic shutter with your A7R camera and see if it works for you.

Joystick... Scrap that. You can most often use the back focus button in tracking mode instead. It's faster and works fine.

The size and weight cut is real in many situations. In other situations it doesn't matter. If you are going or traveling light (I do) it matters as every gram counts. If you are out and about with a lot of stuff the difference is very much minor. And then again, when it comes to more extreme hiking every gram counts again.
I know for me it is a difference with the camera and one or two lenses in the satchel bag while walking around in a new city for the whole day and evening. That's part of the reason why I switched from the 50/1.4GM to the Sigma 50/2...

You will be fine with the A7CR your 35GM. It's on the limit for me but I shot using the EVF and support the lens with my left while holding the camera with my right. Don't everybody? (Notice that nearly all comments on all new lenses people try and report about here "balances well" on their Sony Ax camera).

Try to find an A7C camera and check it out! (Don't trust strangers on the Net.)

p.1 #3 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

I shoot the a7RV. Back when the a7CR/II came out, I briefly spent some time with a unit, but it didn't take. I thought the body felt cramped, it lacked the many custom buttons I've gotten used to, and I missed the big EVF. I told myself I must have 2 card slots. Comparision is the thief of joy.

A year has passed by, and my situation has changed. I moved from the USA to France. I love the idea of having a camera with me as often as possible, but I found that the a7RV was just too big, especially with a 35GM or 50GM. I would need to bring a bag as it didn't fit in a coat-pocket. I got the 40/2.5 G, but it's still too big and a bit too heavy. So I revisited the a7CR/II. I realized that I don't take advantage of the 60MP files for my type of shooting and printing, so I opted for buying a a7CII (it doesn't hurt that it is almost $1,000 cheaper). And now I love it. I accept the a7CII for what it is, not comparing it to a bigger camera. That was the mental switch I needed. I slip it into my jacket on a daily basis, even when I take the dog for a walk or taking kids to school. I am ready to capture something if I need it.

For the first time, I am shooting much more using the LCD. Neither the LCD or EVF are great, but totally usable, especially after I turned the brightness up.

I also find that it has changed my photography a bit. With a big camera with fast GM glass, it is so easy to rely on f/1.4 or f/1.2 to isolate the subject. With a f/2.5 prime or f/4 zoom, I look for different ways to tell the story, trying to make more creative use of layering, frames with frames, different angles, etc. It is more creative and a lot of fun actually.

I see that we are 3 European-based photographers answering this so far. Maybe that tells you something? When I was in the US, I drove EVERYWHERE. Bring a camera bag with big/heavy glass was never a problem - I could always go back to the car and leave the bag or some lenses. But now, in Europe, every gram counts. Many times when I leave the house, I know I'll be out all day, perhaps even evening. I rely on metro get everywhere and having a camera bag adds complexity, even something you might forget at a cafe, or might be pick-pocketed on a crowded metro. Also, European air travel requires smaller bags. Now I just put the a7Cii+40/2.5 fits in my Barbour coat pocket (just barely), and I'm good to go.

Last advice: see if you can borrow or rent the camera first. Or buy one that is used and keep it alongside your a7RIVa. It might not take, and then you have options. But my guess is that you will love it! :-) I am actually selling my a7RV at this point. I'll revisit having a bigger unit when the a7V comes out in 2025.

I find it hard to believe a kid looking at a GM 35 1.4 mounted to an A7CR would be less intimidated than the same lens mounted on an A7RIV.
I have been wrong before.

I think the reason it has been Europeans (and one Australian) commenting in this thread is that it was posted at 3:15AM North American time (on the East coast and after midnight on the West coast) and is now just after 7:00AM (on the East coast). We North Americans were sleeping . That said, I do think there is something to North Americans driving more and walking less and therefore willing to carry more gear. Personally, I would rather have the better EVF and LCD of the A7r V than the smaller size of the A7CR. I have always liked the upper left corner position of the EVF in the C cameras, but I find the EVF and the size of the camera in general a bit too small in use. Now if they would make the C camera with a 5 million dot EVF and about 20% bigger and added a joy stick and a full mechanical shutter I would consider it about perfect, but those are just my preferences and we don't get to custom order a camera. So given the choice we have I have a pretty strong preference for the A7r V and I feel it is well sorted in use and pretty close to what I would want if I could pick exactly what I want.

p.1 #7 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

I moved from the Canon R5 to the A7CR. I had many reasons to move over to Sony, but size/weight was very much a factor. Like you, I was looking to be a bit more inconspicuous both when shooting my kids and also when just out and about on short trips or day to day activities. I didn't need a truly pocketable device, but I also wanted something that could fit in a small cross body bag or a large coat pocket, or something that could hang at my side without drawing too much attention. I tried a Fuji X100V for about a year thinking it could serve that need, but I was giving up way too much in terms of AF, image quality, and versatility of having multiple lens options. The included grip can also be quickly added/removed if you are using a larger lens and temporarily want more grip on the body.

I've been with my A7CR for less than a year, but I have used it extensively in many different situations. I don't think you will feel "stealth", even with the smallest lens possible. You are better off shooting with a longer lens to stay further away from the subjects. With that said, the A7CR and the relatively compact nature of the FE mount lenses make it extremely portable. I can easily fit the A7CR + 35GM combo in a coat pocket and still carry another lens in the opposite pocket (or sneak it into the wife's bag without her complaining much). This offers tons of versatility for almost any situation.

As far performance and image quality, I get better images out of this A7CR than I did from my R5. It rarely misses focus and the 60MP is something that I never knew I wanted. I don't quite understand the issue people have with the flip screen. I had a tilting version on the X100V and the flip out version on the Canon R5. I find the flip version to be far more useful in practice than a tilt screen. After maybe a day or 2 of using the flip screen, you'll be able to open and close it in less than a second with your eyes closed. I also like that when I store the camera in a bag, I can flip it into a closed position where the screen is not exposed. I don't believe that is possible on the tilt style. Moving onto the viewfinder; I find it a non-issue unless you are shooting sports or birds.

Having said all of the above, there are a few shortcomings. I've used this camera for youth soccer, basketball, and gymnastics. I've got some phenomenal images with the 70-200 GMII and 200-600, but if you are planning to use this for sports/birds with any regularity, the burst rate is just a tad too slow even for the casual shooter. A faster, or blackout free viewfinder would also be a MUCH-welcomed advantage in this case. I have kids in sports almost all year around, so for my usage case, I may need to ADD a higher FPS camera rather than find a replacement for the A7CR. It just performs so well in every other area.

p.1 #8 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

Have the A7RIV since 2019 and added the A6700 over a year ago and the A7CR 8 months ago. While I love the results and smaller form factor, there are numerous shortcomings in these compacts, compared to the A7RIV, that make them cumbersome and bother me. They are listed below by importance to me:

~Limited 1/4000ss on both, with a Mechanical ss on the A6700 and NO true mechanical shutter on the A7CR. Both have a 1/8000 ES shutter. I live in the desert area that has mostly bright sunny days. And my wife and I visit Thailand a lot, she was born there, and to cover all photo situations, my compact camera really needs a True MS at with a 1/8000ss. Why have f1.4 or f1.8-f2 fast primes if you have to put a ND filter on them to shoot outside? Or deal with the A7CR banding/funky bokeh issue of using a ES above certain shutter speeds?

~Flip out LCD, I don’t do selfie video and never use the screen tilted now, as having the screen to the side of the camera is unacceptable to me. Really need a A7RV type screen on these compacts.

People buy the A7CR mainly for photography, not video (the A6700 is better at video), but Sony put the above 2 huge (to me) limitations in on the A7CR and hopefully V2 will correct this.

~ The A6700 has a very good flexible silicon eyecup that slides on, but the exact same EVF on the A7CR doesn’t have the ability to use this eyecup?? Instead you are left with a clunky 3rd party solution of using the flash slot to anchor an arm, or adding a external one that goes over the top of the camera, to lock in place

~Too many unmarked dials to turn or buttons to push for basic settings. Miss having the joystick too, more than I thought. Yes you can push the center of the Control Wheel and then rotate the dial to move the AF point, but that is a unneeded 2nd step required every time you want to move the focus point. If you forget to push it, others settings, like drive mode, ISO or the display settings change, a REALLY bad solution. Why can’t we at least have a button push to lock the CW to be AF movement only? A simple joystick solves all of this.

~Dual Card Slots. I get around this by carrying a 11” iPad Air with a USB-C port and at the end of most shoots backup in the field. Having Dual card slots would eliminate me having to carry the iPad and accessories in my camera bag.

~1/160 Flash Sync speed. I use OCF a lot and would ideally like 1/400 FS, but am OK with 1/250 FS like my A7RIV.

For these reasons I won’t be giving up my A7RIV anytime soon. I am looking at other brands of smaller compact cameras that have most, if not all of the above features and possibly replace the Sony compacts due to all their limitations.

The OP sounds he wants to be convinced and probably will buy an A7C. I don't see anything wrong with that idea, but I doubt he will find he takes any better pictures with it than if he didn't get it. The body size is a small part of a camera system. Probably any bag he has that takes an A7CR with 35GM will also fit an A7IV and 35GM, if it won't then I suggest a slightly bigger bag is a viable consideration. If you take out a "real" camera, then people generally don't notice whether it is a Fuji MF or an A7CR, so I don't think changing this will suddenly make street shooting easy. It never is, whatever camera you have. Having said this, the Ricoh looks like a phone, but as the OP knows it is a totally different experience.

As to your poor, intimidated kids. I don't really know what to say. Why are they so intimidated? I shot my kids with all sorts of cameras. They never got intimidated when they were little. When they get older they may make silly smiles or get sulky, but that is nothing to do with what type of camera you are using. More the whole idea that you want to take shots of them at all. Personally. I'd keep the Ricoh as that is a genuine take anywhere camera that truly fits in a pocket, you won't get that with a Sony A7 or A7c.

I found some topics debating between A7CR and A7RV. Of course on that case deciding factor only size and price. A7RIVa is an older model but most significant upgrade in A7RV is the same AI chip as in A7CR. I don't know how much performance upgrade in real world usage. All other factor seems only a downgrade based on comments.
I'm no pro photographer just enthusiast. I don't see ACR limiting me on any aspect, also not think it make better pictures. As I see if I start build a gear A7CR would my first choice, but don't see mutch point to trade A7RIVa for A7CR.

I went from A7RIV to A7CII. I've tried A7C before a couple of times and sold it, hated that camera. I like the A7CII a lot more.

Primarily because I'm not shooting as much but always bring a camera so want something that just sort of disappears when not in use. I just don't need two bodies - whenever I have two or more bodies, I find one gets used 99% of the time. I'm headed out to Japan with the Sigma 17/4, Sony 40/2.5G and Sigma 90/2.8. It is a super light, small, low volume kit that is perfect since the trip is really about experiencing Japan with my family.

On A7CII I don't like the EVF (better than a7c which sucked), 1/4000 max (I have a 35GM and 1.4 is problematic), no joystick, lower resolution. Also would like one more custom button, I have had to work around that in my setup. Rest of it, I adapted to in a couple of days of shooting.

Love the faster chip (way more responsive in operation than A7RIV), better AF, being able to add frame lines to compose in 16:9 and 2:35.1, better stabilization, gyro data for video.

But I'll probably buy A7RVI or whenever they release next gen hi res sensor in full size body. A7CII is a nice diversion for a while.

p.1 #13 · Anyone moved from A7RIV to A7CR?

I have an A7Riv and an A6700. Now, I added the A7Riv while already having and using an NEX6 then the a6400. That's a different path than going from the larger A7s to the smaller bodies.

I don't understand why Sony did what it did on the eye cups. Incidentally, the A6700 cup pops off more than any other camera I've had.

The use of the finder and rear panel. One would need to try them. It's very individual. Moving up was easy, more than a few don't like the move down.

For general travel, I'd find the A7CR size a bit of a benefit. When you get an L bracket with sides and a bit of a lift, even compared to the A6400 with an L bracket, the A7larges don't fit the same bags/spaces that the small ones do. The "fits two mirror-less and three lenses" sort of bag description is shaky. I have bags that a bracketed A7Riv has trouble fitting. Lens choices are important when considering size, bag size, hand size, balance, etc. A comparo on some of the size/fit sites might be handy but real in hand is better. I think the 28-200/2.8-5.6 Tamron is kind of on the edge of a bit too big on the A6700, so would think the same on the A7CR. Fine on my A7Riv. Of course, with any kind of long walking lighter is better.

The A6700 and A7CR have the side hinged rear panel. I can turn the panel in for protection but can't just tilt up/down as on the A6400 or A7Riv. That side hinge is kind of a problem if using an L bracket is a big thing for you. Not sure how to solve that, there are some different approaches out there. Again, one of those individual sorts of things.

If I were going to buy a new body for an upcoming trip, if going to Europe or Japan, I might go with the A7CR. If going to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, it would be the larger body.

I'm thinking about my shooting style and this is the deciding factor, I'm almost sure I give a try for A7CR. Since I've moved on my Voigtlander 40 1.2 to 35 1.2 Art, after 35GM (needed AF) I completely left traditional photographic shooting style behind, and got used to point and shoot style and taking photos exclusively on this way. I'm thinking the A7CR may better for point and shoot style than A7RIV. Only time I use the EVF when ambient light makes difficult to see the LCD.
There is a possibility I'll make a mistake, but then I sell the A7CR and get A7RIV again or A7RV, perhaps A7V.

I can definitely say that my A7CR with something small like a 40G or adapted M lenses looks like a small amateur camera, and not a "pro" camera. Nobody had mistaken me on the street for anyone doing anything commercial or reacted with that sensibility.

Also seconding that the size and weight reduction from a full size (even by smaller Sony standards) mirrorless body is significant. And that getting the more rectilinear shape in and out of bags is easier for me.

I’ve shot a lot on the street these past 15 years using all sorts of cameras from Canon DSLR to Sony mirrorless and not once have I been approached about shooting commercially.

A7Riii to A7Riv to A7Rv to A7CR.. Main thing that I miss is the higher resolution EVF, but OP likes to use LCD, which I use on the CR when shooting from the hip. The camera size works well with very small lenses, but I recently reacquired the 24mm GM and found it a bit large. I added a baseplate and thumb grip and it now works great.
