Yes. It's just they are now about the same price, no reason to buy the older generation. The new USB4 readers are also not more expensive.
I understand and agree.
I know that newer Sony cameras allow to record video to external drives. Does anyone know if it is possible to shoot photos at high frame rate to external drives as well? If so, a small SSD like this 2TB drive for $179 https://amzn.to/3AXBiMm would be a much more cost efficient. Of course for those shooting handheld, it can be cumbersome but most of the wildlife photographers shoot from a tripod so a little device like this wouldn’t make much difference.
Any thoughts before I order one?

I bought the 4GB T7 for $199 exactly a year ago (Nov. 25th) and it now sells for $263 as a "black Friday deal". That's 30% inflation in one year!
Not really inflation, per se, just the market doing what markets do -- pricing according to supply and demand. In the case of SSDs, going from memory chip glut pricing to non-glut pricing. All the major manufacturers last year signaled their intention to cut chip oversupply so higher prices were not exactly unexpected.
I bought a 4TB T7 Shield last year at the peak of the glut (few months before BF) for $199 having watched the price steadily descend before that. The price is now back to about where it was at the beginning of 2023.

arbitrage does - he uses them with his A1 with no issue.
I went with some Nextorage A1Pro cards as they have the fastest sustained write speeds of any Type A card (not counting 4.0 cards) at 850mb/s which is what I use in my A9iii. The company was founded by former Sony engineers with experience specifically in memory and storage development. They have a really good rep - and knock on wood I have had zero issues with them.
Also they have another version called A1SE which aren't as fast but still fast and a fair bit cheaper.
I use the A1SE cards in my Sony A1 with no issues. Worth keeping in mind that VPG200 cards are at WORST as fast as V90 cards at their BEST. So while VPG400 cards are still faster, if you don't take constant, high-FPS bursts VPG200 CF-A cards are a steal of a value.
Product line not for everyone for sure but Cognisys has 15% sale on its products https://cognisys-inc.com/

Totally agree. I order mine specifically to shoot high speed with the A9iii. If not I would have gone with the A1SE which, as you pointed out, are a great value.

I own the F38 tripod and Backpack Strap Clip V2. If you use both, the F38 mount can make sense. The strap clip (v2) is well designed overall, it can hold my A7RV + Sigma 24-70 II or Tamron 70-180 G2 easily.
I used to use the F38 system, but I'm tired of buying into "ecosystems". If you use F38, you have to have it on every single body and/or lens and backpack in your kit.
Super great for the manufacturer because you have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on their niche ecosystem.
PITA for a normal person, because the one day you forget that special F38 mount and have something that's arca swiss compatible - you've now ensured that thing is unusable.
When I have 4 camera bodies, 10 lenses, and 5 backpacks, that's a lotta F38 that I have to buy. Or I can just use the Zero Y which accepts universal arca swiss, which is already on all of my gear.

The OWC or Prograde Iridium (both Type A 4.0) are at a similar price. I'm debating between these 2 brands, and the size. I have the A1 II pre-ordered, and plan to use the pre-capture + 30fps for wildlife. 480GB would be enough but 960GB has a better size/price ratio. I can't believe I'm considering spending > $800 in memory cards (for both slots) !
I'm with you.. I just dropped $1700 on CFA cards for the A1 II. 4x OWC 960GB. Insanity.
But when 960GB is "only" $389, and 480GB costs $300+ and 256GB costs $200+, if you care about value - the 960GB is the only option that makes sense.
