p.1 #1 · Pre-capture image thread...

I'm curious to see some keepers and learn what uses people are finding for this feature in addition to the obvious (Birds & WL). Post your pre-capture images here.

Edit: all images welcome, including birds and wildlife.

You want non-obvious only? Because I'd have an owl or two for you, but you said "other than birds and wildlife."

I have one non-obvious one: I like shooting people on the train platform, and having pre-capture on allows me to click the shutter when I see something interesting that would be gone otherwise.

I also think my son has some HS Basketball with the R1 where he was raving about pre-capture, that's not birds, but he doesn't post here

Very nice images.

Can you say more about how pre-capture enabled you to get these images but you couldn't have gotten them without it? Presumably you were standing (or sitting) there aiming your camera at these scenes for a period of time longer than it would take to raise your camera to your eye and take the picture without pre-capture?

Stan, I just edited my original post as I didn't intend to sound like I don't want birds and WL images. I do want them, so please post your owl shot when you can.

And now that you've posted train images I guess it might take some explaining for people to understand what is happening. Just to be clear, you were shooting from a fast moving train and when you see something interesting you press the shutter to capture what you've already passed by?

Yes. I was on a train zipping thru the stations, and by the time my brain sees something interesting, it's gone. But wait! There's pre-capture!

You can see the leaning lines because an a9m3 this ain't.

Got it! Now I see why pre-capture made the images possible when otherwise you wouldn't have gotten them.

It would be cool if you could link the Nikon crew in also, I could only cross post to one forum

AFAIK, nobody in the Nikon crew is using precapture since they still don't have it in raw lol

ROFL! I have actual tears in my eyes. Yes, not obvious indeed.

Edit: yeah, I get you meant the guy hidden by the train. You did post the other shots too, though. And please don't take this as me being bullish, posting stuff to a large audience takes guts, please don't hesitate due to some random sucker like me. And you did make my day after all:-D

Excellent images; that's for sure! No offense, but to me, they show more the prowess of the AF that really sticks to the birds and less the advantage of the pre-capture feature of the camera.

Thanks, these are all takeoff shots that one might get without pre-capture, but it's definitely easier with the feature enabled. I often wait now until the bird takes off to prevent getting too many images.

Ah, okay and thanks for clarifying that. Indeed, to me images showing pre-capture would include/show a bird from a perch position in the first image to the beginning of an in-flight position. Yes, more a sequence of 5-10 or even more images of the same bird and not of various birds in-flight.

Here are some.
I've gotten all these types of shots without precapture in the past but the precapture made it easier.

I took a lot more images before the first one and ended up deleting them. And yes, in 2022 before the pre-capture era...

What I'm hoping to see members posting pre-capture and capture photo side by side.

EDIT: Great images so far!

I'll take the opposite stance, and say they exemplify precapture for wildlife.

With my Z9, I can't get a picture like he posted to save my life.

A little bird, right after launching off the perch? Forget about it. Precapture would make it so easy to do though

If I wait until the bird takes off, I get the previous 15 frames at 30 fps from sitting, then takeoff and flight images, and the following images appear seamlessly. Of course, I only process those that have interesting poses and wing positions.
